I know everyone is thinking it so i'll just put it out there.
I want to be the guy that gets paid to make cool acronyms for the government. ARTEMIS and ATLAS could have been my words! EYE WIL GETT this JOB if it's the LAST thing EYE DO (I believe that had something to do with NASA...).
Enforcing the law is a good thing! I hate hate HATE that the law is expected the be treated like this. What is the point of making laws if not to enforce them? All you are doing is giving the state something to hold against you if you ever piss them off. Racist cop? 'Hey I caught you doing 55 in a 50 AND jaywalking last week.'. The idea that we would want rules meant to be broken but can be enforced at the cops whim is scary. If you don't like it why not change the law instead?
Getting the most out of his budget is his job. If managed to get another 50 cops on the street making him more effective that is what he is SUPPOSED to be doing. Mandate him to do other stuff if you don't like it. The forced blood tests sound pretty shady but again if it is made legal in Texas then he is simply being prudent. If you don't like it, make a provision.
Isohunt isn't bad they are heading up the fight against copyright to a lesser degree in Canada. As well they have 3.8 million torrents. Someone tell me if another site can top that. Personally I'm looking for a site with a lot of good japanese content.
Sadly, standard failure rate on complex electronics seems to be 3~4%.
PS2 had 10% at release and it dropped to 3% within 6months. (Pretty much the same as the ps3) Wii has a failure rate of 2.7%. The 360 started with over 40% and has just recently reached 4% (Was dropped under 10% by the winter 2007 release of the falcon chip and later the jasper chip).
To contrast this i've only had one system die on me, an n64. If had been dropped and then my dad tried to throw it out so it was left outside in the rain. After i cut the plastic off and sanded the rust away and replaces the heat sinks with pennies it still worked for about a year. My friend put something metal on it (still had no case) and it fried.
The comparison is a little unwarranted... Xbox's failure rate was around 16.5%~33%. Having systems fail isn't a problem.... infact.5% is nicely below the industry standards. It is when you can get 5broken ones in a row that it becomes a problem...
And to bring myself back ontopic: While I agree this law is horrible I doubt it will change anything. If a politician ever gets punished for calling the president intellectually dishonest and has something to back it up the president will be in a lot of shit. The law will likely have the opposite effect as it intends.
I mean who doesn't want a double whammy? You insult your opponent, prove him wrong when there is TONS of press on you and to top it off you get to prove the pres is a wad for enacting the rule and you are a hero for killing it.
I don't think learning political theory is damaging, i think it is valuable. I think moving up the ranks of politics is damaging. 'Experience' is bad for politicians it seems.
Btw backhoe operators and truck drivers are on average woefully uneducated. The governator was decently aware of the world around him. I'm sure the average not to say all backhoe operators would be unqualified to govern because of their ignorance. I think education is a good thing. I'm just pointing out how sad it is that our election system doesn't seem to beat out average joe by that much. I'm not arguing we set thing up like the jury system (which frankly scares me) and put the least qualified people in power.
It isn't artists that rich from copyrights btw. They make money from concerts.
And the harm? That it is presented in such a biased way by such a biased group. We wouldn't let the Cincinatti bible seminary write our science courses for the same reasons.
Apparently the programmer's boss is also a programmer, the artists boss an artist and they are expected to work together. So so SOOOO much better than the bureaucrats most of us get stuck with.
I agree with you partly. While I don't think they'll be putting cities on the moon any time soon (We don't have cities under the sea yet). I do think repealing those laws would be helpful in lowering launch costs. The main thing I believe we will see is advertisements in LEO. Coca Cola would definitely like a billboard in space. I also think they would solve the space junk breaking things problem out of necessity. With lower launch costs and less fears of garbage hitting us the government could take the reigns of exploration at greatly lower costs.
I think the democrat jab was pretty damn unwarranted. Only dems have had balanced budgets in the last 40? years maybe 50. In fact the last few reps in power have one by one been the biggest spenders of all time and have caused the largest increase in debt of all time only to be outdone by their successors. Please do keep this in mind.
I'm sick to death of Damned Professional Politicians. Lets get some amateurs in and see if they can do better.
I always thought this was a good idea. Ok not a good idea clearly but it points out how poor our election system really is. To make it to the top in politics you have to be a corrupt fast talker who is willing to do w/e it takes. This is exactly what you DON'T want in politics.
Then we actually got to take it to the test. California elected a bodybuilder that knew nothing of politics, hadnt gotten the necessary education and spent most of his life covered in oil flexing. Clearly this man has many disadvantages as a politician. And came to power through being the ultimate victor of the popularity contest so he was never forced to be a 'politician'.
Considering he was given a state with many referendums which is a huge disadvantage. I think he has done quite well. He even used his weight as a state to push various issues country wide. And since he did it as a republican he has done much to tie the sides together, working in a non-partisan way. This has been a great healing effect on the state and you don't see the same fervent partisan attacks you do in other big states.
Now imagine if we chose someone uncorrupted by politician but also someone who was well educated, spent their life learning political theory and philosophy. And better yet not forced to kowtow to the pubic opinion. People often say democracy isn't the best system it's the best we've had so far. I don't know if that is true, looking at the current state of politics I often wonder if returning to a monarchy system or other ancient system would be that bad. The only real advantage democracy has is that people are less likely to rebel since they are given the illusion of control through the election process.
People railing on corporations would be fine with them if they were kept in line. It is a companies duty to provied for their shareholders, they are money making entities. But i think left uncontrolled they can cause a lot of damage. I'll admit I rail against corporations sometimes when I'm really annoyed that a fix hasn't been legislated. On the other hand, a lot of right-wing capitalists think we should remove all restrictions on business like the free market has some sort of magical curative effect. When the reality is that if we allowed this companies would eat us up and spit us out in a matter of years.
In reality the girl should be suing the guy for attempted stalking or w/e maybe just get a restraining order. And the patients should be suing the hospital for allowing such a breach in security. And if the girl broke company policy the hospital should be firing/charging the girl.
The company always wins, think of the court system like Vegas, corporations are the house.
In this case a guy commited an offense against his ex. It ended up hurting her hospital's patients. Half the blame should go to the hospital for breaking the rules set up so this should be impossible. Possibly to the girl as well if she violated company policy in getting the email. In the end the hospital gets the money.
I know everyone is thinking it so i'll just put it out there.

Wanting cops to uphold the rule of law makes me a troll? damn... Didn't think there were that many anarchists on /.
To be fair human kind hasn't left low earth orbit since December 1972.
Way to go lack of public interest and dwindling funding.
*sigh*
I'd watch yourself, I hear Mr. Acevedo is sensitive about his weight.

Please tell me you are joking. I've seen people this bad before but not on /. ... aside from the obvious trolls.

Telling them to get a job during a depression is a little harsh...
