  1. Try this: on We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties · · Score: 1

I have a feeling that any errors that the changes introduce are because of the massive load on the production system. Testing in development wouldn't help then.

  2. Old Boys are not so bad on Techweb article on Google · · Score: 1

Most new sites are NOT very useful. There is almost always a growth period that they go through at first. During this period, if people value the site, it will get more links, and its value will increase. It seems like it'll work fine. Your brand new site may not be in the listing right away, but you have to ask yourself whether it deserves to be.

As far as stale "unpopular" sites, I presume they have some kind of aging algorithm in the scoring, so that value fades away as the links do.

  3. I love Ritchie's biography! on Classic Computer Science Papers · · Score: 1

    Sample quotes:

"Subsequently, I aided Ken Thompson in creating the Unix operating system."

"Early in the development of Unix, I added data types and new syntax to Thompson's B language, thus producing the new language C."

Imagine having that on your resume! :)

  4. A little neglected on Classic Computer Science Papers · · Score: 1

Too bad they haven't updated that page in 2 1/2 years... I'm sure there are many other classics that should be up there.

  5. Just a few things. . . on Heretic ported to Linux · · Score: 1

Come to think of it, that K6-2 should be able to run 5 or 6 copies of the game at one time. Just need to port it to run under X.

  6. DES on Linux on DES Keyrate Rapidly Growing · · Score: 1

You are definitely doing something wrong. I have the same processor, and under Linux it gets around 2.5Mkeys/sec! Maybe rc5 client is not getting scheduled because of something else running.

  7. Blockbuster is watching you! on How is DivX Doing · · Score: 1

I've heard this argument before, but isn't Blockbuster "Big Brother" too? Big rental chains already know what movies you're watching, so why is DIVX any different>

  8. Gee, PC Mag does suck on Doing the Quickee Boogie · · Score: 1

"This online community of techies and gearheads posts interesting articles about programming and then discusses them at length."

Boy that does sound exciting. :)

That article looks like hell too. They lifted all the graphics from the actual web-pages, so there are these pixelated blobs all over their nice glossy pages. And they used the TCWWW in the link! Will the horrors never cease?

  9. Misinformed consumers ... (mincing words) on DVD panel accepts Divx · · Score: 1

Well, if you want to mince...

When I buy dinner, I do own the food -- they let me take it out of their restaurant with me (or in me). And you don't pay for charity, you give to charity. Payment implies services or goods rendered, so a charity isn't payment. And besides, he said he *likes* to own what he buys. The few exceptions are rather unfortunate, and everyone I know would avoid them if it was possible.

  10. Highlight on MouseOver?! on Mozilla to use same Widgets on All Platforms · · Score: 1

You see the same thing with style sheets that turn off the underline on links. You end up having no idea what's clickable until you float your mouse pointer over it.

On the other hand, it is nice to have an "active" look to a control for when you're filling in a form with the keyboard. But not when you're just moving the mouse around.

  11. Old Sun B & W suck! on Window Manager Bits · · Score: 1

We had a bunch set up at school, and they were the most pathetic things I have ever seen. They had xdm login screens burned into the middle of the screen, and had the worst contrast ever. Everything was some shade of grey -- no actual black or white was present.

Of course, if you're checking your mail with telnet, who cares?

  12. New version of the starwars trailer on Star Wars Promotions · · Score: 1

In other news, there is another version of the original star wars trailer up on their web site. This one has the black bars at the top and bottom chopped off, and a rez of 480 x 210. There are some mirrors on the page listed in the story.

Also, why would someone who's practically begging for bandwidth submit a link to slashdot?!? It seems like some kind of ritual suicide or something.

  13. Geez, IBM's everywhere nowadays on Toshiba To build Tiny DRAM · · Score: 1

It seems like every new hardware announcement nowadays has some relation to Big Blue. Sounds like they're trying to become the MS of hardware (again). At least they don't seem to suffer from the "Not Invented Here" syndrome.

  14. may not be good, but won't be a flop on Star Wars Promotions · · Score: 1

Siskel and Ebert might not give it two thumbs up, but I don't think there's any chance this will flop! In the eyes of many fans, it *cannot* be a bad movie. And other studios are so afraid to get steamrolled by this movie that they are avoiding that time period like the plague. If you want to see a scifi/action movie in May 1999, it has to be Star Wars.

  15. Some more info on Apple Announcements · · Score: 1

Apple Insider has some more info on the keynote speech, including a blow-by-blow description. I really want to see that pile of 50 iMacs all showing the same video. Jobs sure does have a knack for spectacle.

  16. bye bye USR on Hayes is Dead · · Score: 1

USR used to be just as pricey as Hayes. When they first came out with Sportster modems, it was a big deal because I could actually afford one. Their Courier modems were always very pricy.

  17. A very talented Troll if I do say so on GIMP Book · · Score: 1

He hits all the hot buttons in one swoop:
    * it's overrated
    * it's just ms paintbrush (like the Halloween doc)
    * it's not for serious artists
    * it's a hack
    * it lacks many key features

Plus, instead of leaving quickly after doing his damage, he stuck around to respond to the responses. Even tho he's an AC, his style is very distinctive. By inflaming the already inflamed, he's really taken this to a new level.

NOW, please ban AC's, or at least fix moderation so it moderates something.

  18. Should be easy, right? on Ask Slashdot: Can Linux use Parallel Port Scanners? · · Score: 1

Am I being naive, or is a scanner driver one of the easier device drivers to write? It seems like the protocol is fairly simple: computer tells scanner parameters, scanner sends back binary picture data. Of course the formats of the messages are the hard part, but it seems doable. I'm thinking of giving it a try.

One thing I've noticed in Win95 with my scanner is that it basically locks up the computer while scanning. Maybe Linux isn't real time enough to handle these things.

  19. Some weird HTML in there... on SGI's Visual PC · · Score: 1

After a further review of their HTML source, there are some pretty good reasons for the crummy text.
    1) They use the small tag all over for no apparent reason. I'm not even sure what this supposed to do, but apparently X takes it literally. :)
    2) They use a style sheet to force the text size to be 12 pt in the body. At high rez, 12 pt seems pretty tiny.

  20. Is it just me, or? on SGI's Visual PC · · Score: 1

Ever seen ESPN.com on a linux box? Most web designers don't even bother checking their pages on anything more than plain Windows.

I do fault X quite a bit tho. When I look at stuff on my OS/2 version of netscape, it tends to at least have the same relative sizes as windows, while X fails at this miserably.

  21. A little more info please... on Wine project moves forward! · · Score: 1

These wine announcements tend to be pretty worthless as they are now. It's basically three words of news -- Wine xxxx released -- wrapped in some filler. There are no details of what's new and fixed, which is the only important information that most people want to know. So, you say, click the link if you want more information. Here is the only acknowledgement of the new version on their news page:

"Wine 990103 released, site updated. (990104)"

Real useful. :) Maybe slashdot should start linking these stories to freshmeat -- they seem to have a much better handle on this kind of thing. Here's their take on this new version:

"This release has improved console support, tons of new stubs, improvements to header files compatibility, more features in Wine server and lots of bug fixes."

Much, much better! If you're going to do something, you may as well do it right.
