I think that VB's popularity is mostly due to the fact that it's very VERY easy to create simple applications with it. In the article, they talk about "Business Software". For PHB's, all that counts is the GUI, so VB is a lot easier there. :-)

Well.. then why don't they use Tcl/Tk or Python? ;)

I have a problem with this article itself..particularly the paragraph that states that MS products have become the "de facto standard" among universities. While there is a slight overreliance on Excel and Powerpoint by much of the faculty, IRIX and Linux, as well as Macs and at least one other flavor of Unix, are a very large part of this campus. This I like. If Microsoft tried to move into this university, there would be very vocal opposition from any number of clubs and societies.

Here at the CS faculty of University of Oslo we use mainly Sun and SGI boxes, although some of the professors use MS products like Powerpoint to make handouts (instead of LaTeX.. I can't imagine why..)

It has been like this for a long time (although the Powerpoint stuff is new), but now this era appears to be coming to an end. Although the student organizations are protesting, the PHB's (their academic equivalent, anyhow) have decided that we need NT boxes to run stuff on.
Another, related problem is our space problem; there isn't any. To have new NT boxes, they would have to get rid of some of the UNIX boxes. Some of the boxes are pretty old and slow (SGI Indy's .. well at least they're old compared to the Ultra 5 and 10's), but I'd rather use one those instead if a NT box.

    *sigh*

I really can't understand why so many people are embracing Microsoft products and the Intel processors. IMHO both Microsoft and Intel make inferior products compared to other companies. I hope people will realise this, and do something about it.

Next time one of my friends asks me about what kind of computer they should buy, I will recommend a Macintosh.

I think you're absolutely right. It would be nice if it was like that. People don't need expensive PCs to do regular stuff like surf the web, answer emails and write documents.
A large server in every apartment building would be a good idea, as it would reduce the individual costs.
