Yes, Its an utter shame that Microsoft was able to delay to death Apple's original MacBasic release. It was said to be ahead of its time, and would have been more approachable that MPW but more powerful than HyperCard. Microsoft used licensing for MS Apple ][ basic ROMs as the hostage. MacBasic would have caught the attention of more programmers if it was free on Macs or a cheap and official way to program for the mac GUI from Apple. Think of all the talented kids intrestred in programming Apple lost that way. At least Steve Jobs promotes RAD tools and that's why we have Tim Berner Lee's WWW. The plus side is less Mac Viruses.
This contest seems like a wasted effort since Apple's QuickTime file spec was submitted and ACCEPTED to the MPEG as the basis for MPEG4.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple will eventualy release MPEG4 codecs native for the Mac. Still, its good to see people bringing open source efforts/attention to the MacPPC platform.
I'm still waiting for the PowerPC Open motherboards to show up.
Here's a shocker for you. Apple was far along on a GUI BEFORE they visited Xerox. A proof-of-concept field trip I might add they PAYED Xerox to make. There are some things to hate Apple for (bad customer service, not giving you what you want) but bogus history isn't one of them. It doesn't make you look good.
As fun as it would be to rub salt in your gaping macho wounds, I'll refrain. The secret answer is APPLE DOES HAVE A DESIGN PATENT FOR THE iMAC. It involves a black and white profile drawing. is Gnome the first GUI just for trolls? maybe not
Actually there is a guy working on a port of Doom to Palm. http://boris.qub.ac.uk/tube/doomling.html is his page with screen shots, but it seems down now.
Its true Unix dosen't exist. MSFT says so right here!

Agreed. His FUD rhetoric in that interview can only give Linux a bad name, at least among Mac users. I am still going to pay cash for the LinuxPPC 2000 distro, because of the hardware support they give PPC Linux developers, but his needless arrogance makes me hesitate. I say beat Microsoft with quality, not by assuming their lying ways.
>If there had been a head honcho with _real_ authority (and who understood the overall market) at Apple between '85 and '95, Apple would have never flirted with extinction
There are two main people to blame here.
1) Weak, easily intimidated John Scully, for signing a concept licensing agreement with Bill Gates and Microsoft. That's why the "look and feel" lawsuit against microsoft was lost.
2) Jean Louis Gasse. That's right, Mr. BeOS. After Jobs was scapegoated out by Scully, Gasse 86ed the "Big Mac" project. It was to be high powered servers and mac workstations. Those same ex-Lisa team members Bud Tribble and Dan Lewin (sp?) were the founding engineers of NeXT with Jobs. Now you know why Jobs hates Gasse.
>When is the Mac OS ever going to live up to the long ago promise of cross-platform binary compatibility
When Bill Gates drops dead. Thanks to pointy headed bosses, and other dittoheads Apple needs Microsoft Office on the Mac. Microsoft dosen't like to be deprived of license fees. The reasons this hasn't happened are political, not technological.
A major impetus for the Mac OS 8 name was that it excluded mac cloners who were only licensed for OS 7 versions. But there were bug fixes and stability improvements, more so with 8.1.
Then system 8.5 included the "Nanokernel" that was a part of the abortive Copland OS. Avie Tavanian squeezed more stability from it. And so on with 8.6.
System 9 will provide a compatibility path for pre-G3 macs. Also its a clever way to get developers to start writing Mac OS X compatible apps since Mac OS 9 includes the CARBON libs (portable mac os APIs).
Mac OS 9 also makes system alert dialogs non-modal so you can keep working. It provides digital audio over USB support. Built in Elliptical encryption that uses NeXT's patents there.

Yes, I'm suprised to see this story on Slashdot. It's so fluffy it seems chosen to ilicit flames from people who don't like Apple.

I'll second that. Rob, however is irreplaceable.

Maybe Linus wants to use the iLink(1394) port on his Vaio Picturebook?

"Tog" also worked at a well known company called Sun Microsystems.

Yeah, I mean how can you use a computer without punch cards and toggle switches?!

We are seeing the begining of a massive FUD war. It did need to be mentioned.

The point of mozilla, or the result rather is totally new code. All the old bits have been chucked. But yeah, new releases are no sure thing.

its Sun's new network computer!

sorry gotta go to work now.
Hey, Apple does put their customers first - their stock-holding "customers".
If Motorola hadn't screwed up the G4s production schedule, this wouldn't have happened. Apple trusted Moto, and Moto dropped the ball.
If Apple had dropped the prices by twenty five bucks or so it would have looked better, in the short term.
