True but this is Canada not the US. The DMCA and Patriot Act do not directly affect us (meaning Canada not US). Of course pressure from the South notwithstanding.
Govt is run a bit different here. I seriously doubt the Patriot Act would fly.

Of course there was the War Measures act that Trudeau threw up during the FLQ crisis but the Charter of Rights and Freedoms put that to bed.

Nice to hear but not really surprising. Law firms have always been the staunch bastions of hope for alternatives to MS Office due to the control that you get with Wordperfect.

Why wouldn't the DOJ want to do it as well.

Funny story, I did some IT work for these guys http://www.mbm.com/ who are an IP law firm in Canada and they were the worst for pirating software. I think they had licenses for some COTS workstations that one of the previous IT admins had purchased but they had gone with beige boxes and had installed the same licensed copy (not MS Select) on the remainder of their workstations (about 60 or 70). They had also an Access based application (PAATSY or something like that) which had been licensed for a bunch of users but everyone in the company used it. To allow more people to use it they copied the database several times and if a user needed read access they would open a copy instead.

I don't think they had bought enough CALS for their Exchange box either and had only 1 licensed copy of Wordperfect.

My last job I would take a bus downtown. People couldn't understand it until I pointed out that due to the bussing system here in Ottawa it takes as long by car to get downtown (sometimes longer if the weather is crap) than by bus and saves me a fortune in parking. However I live along the main bus feed. If I was off, this wouldn't be true.

If the company needs to lay off now who says that they may lay off in the future? Chances are when the situation gets there people start leaving due to uncertainty. Sad but true. I have been through two layoffs 1 was when Newbridge started axing people due to stock deflation. The second was because a govt project was ahead of schedule, under budget and actually working succesfully. Both cases after the layoffs people have left and I suspect that even if management had taken pay cuts they still would have (in the last case, their budget got cut so short there is no allowance for overtime so essentially mgmt has taken a pay cut).

As they are the ones who usually do the OS install for the unwashed masses they are essentially the ones who may control availability of said hardware. It's understandable for MS to do this, they are a company, they need to keep their revenue stream and everything before hasn't been able to do it.
