    Chances are the next time you upgrade things may be different. This is what is happening with me. I would like to go out and buy 512M of SDRAM but I want to upgrade sometime in the future to an Athlon and want DDR so I wait.

    The other downside is that it means users need to use .pst files (this is what some sales guy for Openmail said, it may have changed by now) and PST files can be bad (especially #1) With Exchange you can store everything in the server's database which makes it easier to back up.

    When I first started learning Linux I was a User on Solaris and it was a bit of a jump for me to go to Linux. You may actually be lucky that you don't have a lot of DOS experience. You don't have to unlearn things.


    One place that helps a lot (it did for me): Usenet. There is a wealth of information there. Go to groups.google.com and throw a couple of keywords in. Chances are somebody has gone through it before.

    Honestly I don't know why it was considered revolutionary especially in design especially since Compaq were doing the monitor and computer in one before the iMac. If cheesy colours are considered revolutionary then I guess so.

    I worked at a small (60 users) office who had 2 applications that about 80 percent of the work revolved around. Unfortunately it was based off of Windows OS. There are only 3 companies that make a database that did this work and all of them used some form MS proprietary format and the other one was a docketing program that was also only Windows based.

    5. What about security? Riding around on a $3000 device that can't move faster than walking speed is a huge crime oppurtunity.

    Last time I checked the price of those little trike things you see old people riding were starting around $1000 (Canadian mind you which is about what $5 US these days?) and you don't see them getting jacked for the trike (hmm an idea for a crime spree).

    Just curious where did you go to High school? I went to Rolling Hills up until about 1990. Now I live in Ottawa Canada and am about to face the shutting down with Rogers cable.
    They haven't said anything about what is going to happen at midnight here.

    I am in Ottawa and have been on Rogers for about 6 months. I have yet to see my ip address change. I wouldn't worry about it changing unless they have to reorganize their subnets.

    Hell if Shaw was in Ottawa I would have gone to them a long time ago. Rogers has the cartel here. The only alternative here is Satelite from Bell (the other Cartel), Look was a promising up and comer until it started looking like they are (or have they) going under.

    Probably in TO but Ottawa will be better. They use Toronto as the Guinea Pigs. Then don't do the mistakes in Ottawa. Seriously though I suspect that if it is bad for one it will be bad to all. I doubt the changes will be at the edge, more likely it will be nearer the core. The big question is are we going to have to start buying the modem ala Videotron?

    I think I would be more worried about the net infrastructure than what your email address is going to be.

    I am on with Rogers Cable which was Rogers@home but our email has now changed to @Rogers.com which isn't as funny as when I had the email address Iliketogetit@home.com.

    Right now we are still going through Rogers network out onto the net around Buffalo but I assume sooner or later it will be moved off onto their own entrypoint to the net.

    No question about it, you need mammoth amounts of disk space for this stuff to be at all feasible



    This is one of the reasons I can't be bothered to rip rented DVDs to VCD. From ripping the files off of the DVD to converting it to VCD friendly format (which takes FOREVER!!) and then burning it onto 2 cds, I would rather blow the $20CDN and buy the damn movie.

    I used to (note the "Used To") work for a law firm that was complete Microsoft shop. Since I was the only IT Admin (and only person who actually had a clue when it came to anything involving computers) I decided to replace the MS Proxy 2 server with a Linux box running IPChains and to set up Home directories mapped to a drive. The uptime and stability improved greatly. I had 114 days uptime until a planned power outage. WELLL, when they realized what I had done it didn't matter that things were performing beutifully everything went back to the way it was before. They would rather ensure that they wouldn't have problems replacing me than minimize problems.


    So I took a little initiative and got in trouble for it. Thank god I am out of there.

    Funny thing is that this law firm specializes in Intelectual Property (Patent and Trademarks) and is way out of compliance with their MS licenses.

    Storm Internet is trying to get Wireless extensively outside the Ottawa area. I gather this is a good way to compete in getting (and keeping) users. I think there are several towns around Ottawa that they have coverage for.

    At my last job they wanted to try out encryption but did not see the need to spend so much money per seat (worked out to about $35k total). Also was willing to look into GPG but it doesn't integrate well (if at all with Outlook). Since this wasn't a technical oriented group (most of them didn't know how to change a defalt printer). It would have needed to be somewhat idiotproof.

    The closest thing is if the administrator has set up IIS (boo!) with the Exchange server as you then get Outlook web access. It isn't as feature rich as Outlook but will work with it.
