Even the article says that WP8.Next would have its own cycle......so a WP8.5 or WP9 would still get at least 18 months of support. The summary is just FUD. There was nothing in the article and nothing in their source saying that Microsoft was abandoning Windows Phone as a platform......just that the OS support has a time limit.

    Options for the original poster:
Look for charities that don't get a lot of government funding. Those are the ones that are probably hurting the most. Battered women's shelters are probably funded better than a food bank. An HIV clinic is probably funded better than a private animal rescue. Etc.

The missing piece is that the information communicated would be a location.

Of course, if we could sound as energy, then it's not much different than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

iPad mini, Kindle Fire, Nook Tablet. All of these are about as pocketable as some of the phones but have much better battery life (especially if you shut them down instead of put them to sleep) and would provide you with your data consumption needs.

I'm not saying this is right for everyone, but the poster above was saying that they shut off data and what not and barely use their smartphone in order to conserve battery life. I'd argue that if battery life is that important, switch to carrying two devices -- one for phone and one for data.

If you aren't really using the smartphone that much, you'd almost be better off with a tablet (with a data connection if you want) and a dumb phone. The tablet can stay off until you need it and the phone can last tons longer (saw and article about a Nokia dumb phone that would last 35 days per charge).

I've had less luck at the internet moonlighting sites (freelancer and guru.com) because there are way too many people competing for jobs (and too many people from India). I've had much better luck going through my local Craigslist. There have been a couple of duds (failure to pay or pay in a timely manner), but I can meet face to face and sell my skills based on an interview (I interview well) and also get a feel for the person requesting the work (I've turned a few down). That extra level of comfort seems to work in my favor.

There are a lot of "make me a web site for $150" type of offers, but if you keep an eye out, you can usually find better projects (I just picked up one working with the Kinect -- which is something I wanted to learn anyway).

I've made $2k to $4k most years in side work. If I took on more than 5 or 6 projects, I could probably get that number up to around $10k to $12k per year just working nights and weekends (but I'd rather have some free time). Probably not enough projects to quit my day job, but that's not what I'm looking for, anyway.

    This.

How many people in this list would pirate instead of pay. How many of these downloads represent aborted downloads that are retried (it is a large download). How many of these would have been covered by the home license (I believe you get up to three computers with the normal licensed product -- as opposed to Student edition or other licenses). etc.

The numbers are important, but probably misleading.

And while the free Office products are sufficient for most people's normal use (i.e. homework), MS Office is still a superior product. If you need more complex features on a semi-regular basis, it's worth paying the price (but if all you do is type in text and change the font, stick with free).
