    Someone I know was doing some consulting (Business Intelligence) work for a big data mining company (don't remember the name) where all of the data was anonymized.......it didn't take much work for him to find his data. How many people do you know that were born in the same year as you, drives the same car as you, and lives in the same neighborhood as you? Even if that's one or two others, you only need one or two more criteria to single you out (salary range, birth state, marital status, etc.).

    So, even if AT&T anonymizes the data, it won't take much effort to identify you.

    Also, how much of the sales of Android are BECAUSE of the fragmentation? Or in other words, is Android successful BECAUSE of fragmentation? If I had a device that continued to be upgraded from 3.x to 4.x and beyond, would I be so anxious to jump to the new versions (sort of like how the 4s wasn't a big enough reason to jump from the 4)?

    Fried pickles tends to be bar fare.....since they raised the drinking age to 21, you don't get nearly as many college grads who are familiar with bar far. Sure, there are a few who figure out how to fake an id, but they tend to be artists and not CS majors.....or friends of artists, at least (and we all know that CS majors don't really have that many friends -- and least not IRL friends).

    This is the government we're talking about.....there are all sorts of compliance laws. It needs to wide enough for a wheelchair, have hand railings, be at a shallow enough slope, be made to withstand at last 1000lbs, be sourced from an approved lumber mill, be transported by union workers, etc.

    Agreed. Win8 Metro interface is just a full screen start menu with auto-updating icons. I primarily use desktop mode the manner that I ran Win7, but when I want to run a Windows Store App, I can. It doesn't run any faster or slower than Win7 on my Core i5 w/ 4GB. This machine is four or five years old but does everything I need (including the development I do -- and VMs I run). I'll eventually upgrade the RAM, but I'm good with this laptop for a couple more years at least.

    You can't do it from the right click menu, but you can do it with the developer tools open....

    Actually, the IE developer toolbar (F12) is as effective as FireBug and the Chrome developer tools. Chrome is the only one that shows local storage (Indexed DB, WebSQL, etc.) easily, but they all show the loaded files, the network timing, cookies, allow breakpoints, inspect CSS, etc. The developer tools were an add-on in early versions, but has been integrated since version 8 I think.

    Because I don't want to hunt for gigs. By working for someone else, they bring me work. They also do that boring accounting and payroll work. I get to do the stuff I love and enjoy without having to do the stuff I hate.

    This is the case I make to people when they ask me what tablet they should get. If you are entrenched in an ecosystem, stick with it. Unless there's a really compelling reason to switch --- such as hating your current ecosystem or not being able to wait for your current ecosystem to adopt some must-have feature.

    I love my Windows Phone (which works just fine with all of my Google accounts, BTW -- in before the cut-off), but I would recommend people get and iPad or a Nexus if they had already invested in a lot of digital content for their current device.

    Streaming one HD movie is fine if you live by yourself......but I've got a house where everyone (5 members) is connected and streaming content....not all of it is HD movies, but I do consume quite a bit of bandwidth on a regular basis.

    If you have a public DNS, how could they stop you from using a different one? But really, they'd have the IPs even without the NSLookUp and they can do their own query to get the name if they really needed it.

    SOMEONE already has your surfing habits......would you rather be part of a small population where you can be singled out or part of a large population where you become a lot more "anonymous".....

    Actually, this would be more interesting to set up multiple routers with a New York MAC, a Los Angeles MAC, a Tokyo MAC, and a London MAC. That way no one can pinpoint your location with this technology. Instant stealth mode.

    And you're connected.....

    I launch Chrome very infrequently (I just close the lid on my laptop, so it's still "running" for several days and/or weeks). Sometimes I launch Chrome even when I'm not connected to the Internet.......as a developer, I use a browser beyond just to browse the Internet....

    So, I've actually been a couple of versions behind on Chrome (not on purpose, but it happens). It eventually corrects itself, but it's possible to be behind a few versions.

    But you aren't buying from a supplier and in bulk. How much of that $7/lb does the grocery story pay their supplier and how much pays the stocker and how much is profit? I'm sure Google is paying a lot less than $7/lb for quality beef.

    Don't forget the extra payroll tax and the extra SSI / FICA.

    At some point, I'm going to trace $1,000 through the system to see how many hands it has to pass through for the government to have claimed at least $900 of it. (I'll assume a starting point of it being part of an average worker's salary.) Income tax takes a chunk, sales tax takes a chunk, the business counts some of it as income (which is taxes) and they pay their supplier who takes some of it as income, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the government had most of it with just a couple of parties handling the money.

    They were also nearly the last games of their nature that were any good. Shortly after the Monkey Island series, games started going 3D (FPS) or real-time (RTS) and the point-click adventure was pushed to the side. Some of us still enjoyed them, but we became niche and the larger budgets were spent on other genres.

    Why should it matter whether the contract is over or not? As long as you fulfill your end of the contract (pay for a minimum level of service for 2 years), it shouldn't matter whether you've unlocked the phone any time before that contract ends. Even if I turn around and sell the hardware (locked or unlocked) while under contract, it shouldn't matter as long as I pay the 2 years of service.

    You do realize that MSFT has paid dividends for a while, right? http://www.microsoft.com/investor/Stock/StockSplit/default.aspx

    Also, Microsoft only gets the cash from the stock sale when it's originally issued. The fluctuation in price is from stockholder to stockholder and Microsoft doesn't get any of that money. So it isn't exactly a recurring stream of money.

    If you are that worried about it, just quit using the Internet. If you aren't connected, no one can track you. If you use the Internet, something is tracking you (your ISP, your OS, your favorite web site, the ad networks).

    Otherwise, accept the fact that you are being tracked and/or don't do anything you don't want tracked.
