Except for all of the moms, aunts, friends, etc. of those educated people who have a "magic box" that said educated person set up for them. It runs this thing called "the Internets". And I know *MY* mom/aunt/friends/etc. aren't flush with cash. That's generally the reason they are running on cobbled together Linux boxes in the first place.
It's sad that you posted this as anonymous and I have mod points.
I actually worked in a company once that said "business logic must be in procs in the DB in case we ever change the front end language". I also worked in places that said "business logic must be in the front end in case we change DBs". I've always been a big fan of put the right code in the right place. There are certain rule enforcements that are simple with the database (triggers, keys). There are cetain enforcements that are simple with front end code (input validation). But as you describe, using a database level layer of abstraction coupled with a framework layer level of abstraction, you get the power of both and the flexibility of swapping whichever piece needs to be swapped.
You can still patent the process for isolating the gene and constructing the gene and using the gene. Just not the gene itself. Which is fine....in my mind, it's prior art.....all you have to do is find an organism with that gene that existed before the patent....the organism created it through natural means, but it still created the gene.
But, if fewer kids were there (especially the more disruptive ones), then the lost funding could be taken from discipline spending instead of learning spending and it would all come out fine. And if the school shrunk significantly, classes could be combined. There are plenty of small town high schools that only have one or two English classes for an entire grade (as opposed to 20 or more classes).
I know the schools make a big deal out of the attendance = funding, but you know what, I was glad when I placed into Gifted and Honors classes because it eliminated the riff-raff.
Except in older video games. If it wasn't rendered on the screen, it wasn't active and moving. You could leave the room, wander the dungeon, and come back, and that monster would be in exactly the same place when you can back with the mega-gun.
Something else you have to consider when putting a computer together is that he's talking about the government.....they have rules and stipulations about pretty much everything. Are the parts you selected approved? Are there labor types of contracts (i.e. unions) that would get you in trouble for building or moving or plugging in the systems? Could you even get approval for the purchase?
Even if it's an option for a small business, it's a complication for the government.
I agree. I've been at garage sales where people with these scanners show up. They're going to have to do some work to earn that profit that I wasn't willing to do (and knew about at the time). I only wish more of them would bargain with me. If a guy with the PDA came to me and said the price was too high, I'd ask him what he'd want to give me.....recognizing that he wants some level of profit margin. At my last garage sale, I was sold some stuff for $10 that a guy felt he could get more for on Craigslist.....I helped him load it into his car. Had I wanted to go through the effort to sell it on Craigslist, I would have. And for the record, these were "neighborhood garage sales" so I didn't do anything other than drag the crap to my driveway and wait for people to show up.....it's all about minimal effort for me.
So, if the library/thrift store/whatever wants to put forth the effort, they'll get the reward. If they just want to move it, these guys with scanners will be able to make their own profit.
How would you feel if you favorite car was gone? There are probably plenty of cars that are just about the same nearby, but I know I would be sad.
Or probably a better one that this audience can relate to.... How would you feel if your favorite sci-fi show was cancelled? There are probably plenty of shows that are about the same.....ok, well probably not....there aren't enough sci-fi shows. But there are other shows.......
Oh, my wife cusses like a sailor (in private.....in public, you'd barely know it). I don't have a problem with it, but choose not to. You're free to do whatever you want. (Follows my basic leanings in most things -- as long as it isn't dangerous and doesn't affect anyone else, have at it. I make a few exceptions, but in general think like that.)
I'm pretty sure I have plenty of fun. Originally, I didn't cuss because of the sin and parental threat of punishment. After a while, I took it as a badge of honor. But now, I see it as mostly an aspect of self-control.
I know myself quite well and know that I have an addictive personality. In some areas of my life, I have to reign myself in or it can get out of control (I'm addicted to the Internet....but I'm not going to "fix" that). With my addictive personality, I know that were I to begin consuming alcohol, it would go beyond social drinking.....so I don't drink. I've never smoked. I've never done drugs (other than medicine). I don't gamble. I don't cuss. It isn't that I feel like I'll be doomed if I do, but I want to retain control over myself and my actions.
Sure, it would be easy to use many of the words that have become prevelent in our entertainment (even on network TV you'll find many of them) to express emotion (because that's really how they are used, not to describe the thing the word actually represents). But instead, I choose to express that emotion with a sigh or a grunt or whatever other vocalization expresses the emotion but doesn't use any "taboo" words.
As to my fun....well, I think I live a pretty happy life and for the most part enjoy everything I do. And I don't feel like I'm missing out by limiting my vocabulary in this one area.
Programmers don't always equate to good designers. And good designers probably aren't good programmers. (Exceptions exist, but true for the most part).
Otherwise, we wouldn't have terms like "programmer art".

I eventually got mine back to "normal" by disabling an option that wasn't intuitive....
Help & Preferences / Dynamic Index / Use Classic Index.
Much better. I know sites are trying to make things better, but sometimes their idea of better just plain isn't.

Until you realize that some unattended laptops don't even need to be opened to access the PCI bus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard
the ExpressCard's direct connection to the system bus over a PCI Express ×1 lane

I'm pretty sure that Slashdot will post that very same story tomorrow.......and probably the day after, too.
Being forced to use Windows Millennium would hurt or kill me.
If you didn't do it yourself for having to run it......
Or, they could port it to Go. Then they'd own the language, too. Just one more snub to Oracle (see other article about Oracle's brain drain).
I'm actually saying keep Windows as the host and only let the Linux VM have access to the Internet.....
Since Windows can't access the Internet, it should be reasonably safe from the nasties you referred to.
Only give the VM IP access to the Internet. The host machine should stay fairly well protected. If you want to play online games, use your console.
DOS 3.3, Lynx

I'm pretty sure you can find the Melissa virus around somewhere. Mostly benign. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224567
Not overly difficult to remove. Isolated to Word. Doesn't do perm. damage.
Nope....just Somali pirates.

90 to 100 miles per day of travel back in 1492. And that was the typical range with 200 being not impossible.

But didn't you hear? Corporations are seeking personal privacy. Next thing you know, they ask for second rights (bad pun intended).
Think of all of the things you COULDN'T do in Lisp if you could only use 1k parens...... :D
i was on a really bad connection that was dropping packets left right and center.
So, you're saying that your information was falling into a black hole and you couldn't retrieve it from the event horizon???
