  1. Re:Anyone have words about the browsing on Palm Pre Is Out, Time For Discussion · · Score: 1

You've obviously missed the point - the iPhone INTERFACE is what prevents proper multitasking. The Pre's implementation is genius - its abundantly clear what program you are using at the moment, and how many programs are open. Switching between them is trivial - the key to "multiple tasks."

Even with the iPhone, where if it's jailbroken the multitasking capability is accessible (and I'd imagine ALL slashdot readers who own an iPhone indeed have jailbroken it), there is no feel of true multitasking. All you get is "background processes" - you do not ever feel that you can do multiple tasks.

There's only a few hours left, but if Apple was smart, they'd release OS 3.0 with multitasking similar to the Pre's. This would probably convince at least half of those eyeing the Pre to keep their iPhone. But one can only dream...

You've obviously missed the point. When customers buy these, they know what they are getting themselves into! If you've noticed, Dell will not try to sell you ubuntu. They "agree" to sell it to you. Adding more value to their ubuntu offering means they are accommodating people who are willing to experiment, and give them a full package including all the basics. Aunt Mildred will not be buying this computer. Experimenter Joe will be. He will understand that he needs "ubuntu compatible" when it comes to outgrowing routine tasks. But experimenter Joe expects that whatever was included in the box works right out of the box, including that dvd drive that should play dvds....

The sad thing is, I don't think it will ever happen simply because all those in the legal system see themselves as some kind of elite, and doing things in a way that make sense will make "the ones who figure out the mumbo jumbo for you" kind of unnecessary. I think they will do everything in their power to keep themselves in power.

  4. Re:I hate the l337 txt culture on iPhone Keyboard Leads to Typso · · Score: 1

The reason for not working in Hebrew is most likely because unlike English, vowels in Hebrew are separate from the characters. For example, Shalom not vowelled (insert hebrew characters here - apparently slashdot doesn't support unicode...)can be pronounced in any of the following ways: Sha / Shoo / Sho / Sa / so / soo - Lom / Loom or even Shalvoom. The real pronunciation is Shalom = hello. If we change this by one character it now changed to mean something else. I had more examples with real Hebrew characters... but was forced to remove it :-(

Truth is though, random words that are typos can usually be figured out pretty easily. Considering the fact that many words have multiple meanings and pronunciations and most of written Hebrew is not vowelled with many unvowelled words thus effectively spelled the same way, very often you have to figure out how to pronounce something based on context. So even though it might not work as well in Hebrew, we definitely do manage fine when seeing typos.

  5. Give the adventurous a shot at a cheaper system on Countering the Arguments Against Unbundling Windows · · Score: 1

Although I'm all for linux, I don't think that most people are ready for it. However, this can be solved very simply. When a computer is configured (for example on dell's website), there should be an option that says: "Operating System: Linux - save $54"

This way, all those who want to save money, and are WILLING to relearn an OS, can actually do so. All others will understand that there is a cost of time, support, and unfamiliarity that is associated with a new OS. Hey, even Mac OS X, the supposedly "best" out there, is still very hard for me to use (I didn't really spend much time though..) Switching is NOT comfortable. But we should have a choice.

Oh, and one more thing - if computer makers are getting paid to pre-bundle trial software, thus offsetting the cost of windows, well then the builders will show "save $20" instead of $54. Or not. But even if windows is effectively "free" as far as the builders are concerned, there still is some kind of unfair competition going on. This enables unfair competition, and an inferior product. Our ability to choose should be there. Regardless, it should be clear that refuses Windows should save you an amount equal to the price paid by the builder for the OEM license. There could be a separate discount that is given for accepting trial software, but this should not change the pricing disclosure on the windows license. Enough Said.

Why is it that airports have special significance? Seriously, think about it. There are many other places with large concentrations of people that we are not spending any money on for security that would be ideal terroristic locations. Would you say that "I'm shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to a college campus"? or how about "I'm shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to an art show"? or how about "I'm shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to a concert"? or "I'm shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to a park"?. Is all this paranoia actually making us safer? I suspect what it is doing is making flying more inconvenient for the traveler, more expensive for the airlines, reducing businesses ability to function and more because let's be honest here.... It is not hard to imagine any number of amazingly effective scenarios that terrorists could use that would be far more effective than focusing on airports, so quit with all of the panic reactions already. You are right, the airport should not be different than any crowded place... the real question is, why isn't there security at these crowded places? If you've ever been to Israel, its a known thing that security will always be in place in crowded places.

Jobs will probably break the unlocking for the next few updates just until all the contracts with the providers all over the world are finalized, and then he will shrug his shoulders and say "we tried, but the hackers are just too good," while he watches his sales keep going up :-)

TFA says it's already detected by antivirus as Email-Worm:W32/Zhelatin.IL. so as long as the users have some antivirus they should still be okay too. Then a mature intelligent discussion can begin, where nearly EVERY SINGLE ONE of the hate comments (excluding the comments based on the never-had-a-chance christianity) would be irrelevant, or properly shot down. 16. I believe in my religion based on scientific logic on Creationism Museum To Open Next Summer · · Score: 1

    Heres a question:

Ever read a translation of a book and feel like you didn't exactly get the essence of what its trying to portray? Hmmmm... well most translations of the bible are originally from Hebrew.

How many people who are not Jewish are experts in the Hebrew Language allowing a proper understanding of God's word? (Here's one: http://www.vendyljones.org.il/vendyl.htm)

So for all those die hard science backers (and science should not have to be contradictory to religion), wouldn't the scientific approach indicate that all translations (effectively most of the non-hebrew speaking world) be incomplete in terms of communicating the word of God?

    Another question:

Have you noticed that every religion has one guy that says "God spoke to me and told me to tell you......?" How about that there is only one religion that claims that God spoke to 2 million people and told them the 10 commandments... (you really should know which one that is).

    Last question:

Laws of probability indicated that the probability of something that happens almost never (limit approaches zero) = 0. Thus, I'm assuming that the scientific approach would be to say that since the chances for a world to evolve from "insert whatever exactly it is here (I forget)" are infinitely small - then the probability of that happening is ZERO.

So what are we left with:
    - 2 million people claim they saw God give them the Bible.
    - They all have the same exact story even 3000 years later. Parchment Bible scrolls written in Hebrew (some of them thousands of years old) all have the same exact text, word for word.
    - The probability of 2 million people making this claim and succeeding without it being true are equal to zero (again, probability theory).
    - The probability of "scientific" atheism being true, is equal to zero.

Now if you really were scientific about this, what would your choice be?
