My math skills are week, (I tried doing some 3d stuff but it made me run crying back to windows apps). I would love to learn more, but I don't know where to begin.
Assuming I know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide (But nothing else) what subjects would I need to learn, and in what order? (I'm guessing that Calculus isn't first)
There is a reason why we have big skyscrapers downtown. Why very few people are working in a virtual office? Technology limitations? Nope. The fact is that people communicate best face to face.
An office or factory or any other type of work environment that's staffed by the right people will kick ass every time. But this is a very hard thing to do. But if you have the right people working together it's simply amazing.
But today we don't have much of this, because many leaders of today's business are just in it for the quick buck, and most of them will just lie, cheat and steal to get rich. They are doing this because they have seen so many other business leaders lie, cheat and steal and then got rich! Hell the president of the United States can lie and get away with it, why can all the other leaders.
This trend will reverse itself, because eventually the crocks will run out of suckers. And businesses will have to return to the solid practice of making great products, with great people. But as long as they are just trying to scam people they will outsource, because to them the work is secondary (at best).

a) We figure out why the amount of light we get from the sun is dimming. (10% in the last 30 years)Link b) We figure out why the earth's spin is erratic. It slows down and speeds up for its own rhyme and reason.Link
The fact is that we are just along for the ride here. The notion that man is in control of the climate is laughable. This planet is not a stable, sublime, resort town. Mother Nature has a hell of a temper.
Is that it shows just how much more computers can do, and how software and the internet are not anywhere close to dead. Ever since the internet buzz started many software / internet companies have been acting like slime balls. It's always about the story the company has, there marketing, all these things buzzing around just so that you can get spend $100 on a product that cost $0.02.
Take hotmail for example. Trying to sell you 10 cents worth of disk space for $10. That's just a rip off. Goggle comes around, builds some real technology, and sells it much closer to cost. Goggle is one of the first software / internet companies realizing that %100+ markups are unreasonable. If what you're selling is a commodity, you make money on volume.
Google is forcing all of the other players to step up there game. You just can't write a crappy web-app and expect to make any money. You need to make something that actually solves a problem. This is good news for all software developers, because a) We won't be writing boring apps anymore, b) The html experts, and others that have floated along won't be able to keep up.
Is that MMG are supposed to be all about the community, go online, meet people, play together. But what I don't understand is why don't they make the games compatible with existing communities.
For example I have a friend who plays EQ, he has played for years and has a high level character. I hear him talking about this game and all the fun he has, battling monsters, exploring dungeons, pushing his character to the limits. I think that sounds like fun, so I go out a buy a copy install the game, hand over my credit card, log in, only to find that I can't play with my friend.
Oh sure I can see him in game. He can show me around the cities and stuff, but I can't play with him. The monsters at my level are trivial for him. I can't group with him, I can't go to the same zones, I can't fight the same monsters. I won't be able to do anything fun with him until I put in a massive amount of time on my own and hit the level cap.
The design of the game forbids it from being an extension of an existing community. The thing that I find really baffling is that the game isn't all that different at higher levels. Your still attacking monsters, and exploring dungeons it's just they are a different level, that's it! Sure there might be a trick or two thrown in, but it's still the same principle
There should be nothing stopping me from grouping with my friend from the moment I log into the game. Sure I won't be as fast or as strong, nor have any of the super cool abilities he has, but I could still contribute, and most importantly I could enjoy the experience of playing with my friend, talking about it at the office.
The first MMG that combines that fun of EQ without the silliness of the levels will take this genre of games to the next level.
Not what we are doing. The progress we have made over the past 25 years is more about many things becoming easier to do or in some cases obsolete. I mean all Tivo is just an automated VCR. You hardly ever put disks or anything into your computer. Using internet banking just saves a trip to the bank or the mail box. It's now very simple to send messages to anyone anywhere in the world for almost free.
In 25 years from now it will be much more of the same. Tax preparation may become a thing of the past because computers have it nailed. Gas stations might be completely automated. Typing things into a computer could be fully optional, (But people still will). People will probably live longer. It will cost even more to live in New York. You get the idea.
I hope that we will have one or maybe even two OMG technologies. (Anti Gravity, Warp Drive, Sentient AI, you get the idea.) But these things tend to only come around once every hundred years. (Fire, Farming, The Wheel, The Gun, The Car, The Light Bulb, The Computer) so it might be asking for a bit much.
C is very good at programming operating systems, drivers, and any time you really need to have a piece of code run extremely fast. The power in directly manipulating memory are must sometimes.
But C really sucks when it comes to building a business app.
Is VERY VERY Healthy for everyONE IN MY OFFICE THAT I GET TO HAVE MY GODDAMN COFFEE, AND DON'T BUG ME TILL (sip) I'm done. Because I'm a much calmer reasonable person after I've had my little cup of happiness.
According to their website, Subversion also supports a standalone server mode, much like cvs pserver/ssh
Yes! And it rocks. Once setup commands are simple and so much better then cvs. For example a current anonymous checkout from sourceforge requires the following commands.
I have used bluetooth and it rocks. The thing is with Bluetooth is that its only useful if devices come with it enabled. I recently got a pocket PC with Bluetooth and its great for connecting with other devices. PDA - Cell phone for Internet access is one good example. The only thing lacking with bluetooth is that not enough devices are shipping with it.
Farming labor - Pick up food. Textiles Work - Mixing, sewing, cutting Factory Work - Operate machinery, assemble stuff Accounting work - process accounting records. Keep track of accounts, understand new tax laws Computer Work - Takes specs, translate into computer format, test, fix, debug
The trend I see is that we keep having to move up to more and more challenging jobs. The new jobs are always more interesting then the last ones. Yes the cube jobs are going away, and yes there will be pain. But the new jobs will be more exiting, and by the time they get to be boring they will be outsourced as well.
If you want to know where the new jobs are going to be, take a look around at the more challenging positions that exist, where people are doing things that seam to be confusing and difficult to understand. These jobs will one day become just as everyday as programming is today.
We always want to stay where things are safe. We want to have a stable life long job that pays well, that is relatively simple. Our current educational system doesn't help us adapt to change. The only reason people stay in school till there well in there 20's and rack up tons of student loans is because they believe that they will be set once they are done. This is a lie, and the educational system is going to have to change to reflect the reality that it no longer makes sense to train for 5 years, for a job that will last only 10. Education must become much more rapid, and cheap. When it dose these transition periods will be much easier to handle.

If there asking for your advice then don't give it. Just tow the company line. Also you might want to get your resume ready, Having higher ups interfere with the lower levels of the company generally means that something is wrong. If everything was fine they wouldn't bother poking around.
Whichever one support HD 16:9 sets it the one I'll go for. I just spent a ton of money on my new set and all DVD's still play with black bars across the top and bottom. Maybe its just my settings or something, but it sucks having the bars on wide screen movies when I have a wide screen set!
I am Canadian. This is just another tax. Much like our tax on CD's. Just anther way for the government creatively tax.
This is how it will work out.
The Supreme Court (Made up of members directly appointed by the prime minister, no real ratification process up here. Just the PM appointing his buddies.) will declare that the ISP's are liable and that they must collect royalties for Illegal downloads.
The ISP's will complain that there is not technical way to track what users are downloading. (true) And that there is no way to prove what downloaded content is illegal.
The government will implement a tax on downloading. It will be taxed at a rate of 10 cents per Megabyte. ISP's will collect this tax and it will be added to your bill.
A brand new branch of government will be created, and will redistribute a portion of the tax.
After much heated debate the tax will be lowered to 1 cent a Megabyte. At this point Canadians will accept the tax since they are now getting a 90% discount.
Calling bullshit on me eh! Thats a pretty serious charge!
It is true. Perhaps a little more information would help. My site has the same name as me. ie myname.com. also enter my name in google you get this site. (A few friends link to it I guess).
Anyways I found out through this experience that there are a number of people I knew way back then but haven't spoken to in years who read the site regularly. One of these people was in contact with her and let her know. (At least thats what she said in the email.) The e-mail looked legit. (Coming form a hospital where she said she worked.) But i guess its not beyond reason that it is a prank. (Maybe I should track down her and ask!:) )
If my wallet is stolen I can call the credit card company and have it canceled. If I think someone else is using my card number (Seeing extra purchases on my bill) I can also cancel the card. But if someone's got my thumb print, how can I ever stop them?
I've had my own website for a few years now. I loved posting little stories about myself and keeping in touch with some old friends back home. I was pretty comfortable posting just about anything because I was certain that only a few people where reading the site, and that I knew who they where.
So one day I put up a post where I reminisced about my high school days (Over 15 Years ago), and I mentioned my first crush and how she shot me down. Mentioning her by first name only.
A few hours later I got an e-mail. From Her!. Asking me to remove the post from my website. 15 years, after my last contact with her and I get an email from her almost immediately after submitting a post with her first name. I guess the thought of her name associated with mine is to much to bear.
Anyways, now the only thing on my site is the local temperature.

Its great so far. But one small thing, the spell check doesn't have an add feature.
So my own e-mail address keeps coming up as a spelling mistake.
Clam down, its not as bad as it seams.

I would love to help, but my linux box does not have an x server, so I would not be able to run a java app with any kind of gui.
Is there a non gui option? Something I can run from the command line?
