No, but if an author's vision seems like it has a shot at being appreciated, funding comes from people expecting a return on their investment. That reason would disappear in a copyright-free world. Unless you are already a well-known author, you would only get sponsorship from philanthropists. Am I wrong?

So you're against the current DISTRIBUTION methods. Great, me too. I don't care how you get your entertainment, just make sure the AUTHORS get paid. Abolishing DRM is a step toward that goal, abolishing copyright is not IMO.

So what happens in a few years when everybody will be able to afford HDTV and this will no longer be true?

Case in point: MP3, which for most folks is as good as CD.

Movies will still survive through private patronage or government subsidies. A number of important films that are acclaimed as triumphs of cinema were not expected to generate any profit, but the auteur was able to secure funding by people who appreciated his vision. And as for software, the point of the OP remains. People might not necessarily be paid for the duplication of software, but they may nonetheless be paid for its creation. Look at Google sponsoring Free Software projects.

Some authors may be able to secure funding, some may not. Let's pick 10 of your favorite authors (any arts field). Now let's say that maybe 5 of them will be skilled enough to secure funding. The world would still lose 5 authors' great works.

  5. Re:Good Luck on De Icaza Pleads For Mono/.Net Cooperation · · Score: 1

Mono? I just don't see any practical use of it for me. Few apps, bloated runtime. What are the advantages? Java is much better for portability. I'm a Windows developer. After years of MFC, Java and ASP (thank God THAT's over!) I began developing for .NET, ever since 1.0. Everything, from the C# language to the services stack just rocks - particularly ASP.NET if you measure it against ASP, PHP, JSP, JSF and the likes. To each his own, as they say, but C# is IMO the best HL language out there and it's only getting better, and with a great IDE in VS and the services present in the .NET framework (as well as many useful 3rd party tools and libs out there) are nothing to sneeze at. I'm Mono's target audience. If you're already using either of C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby etc. and you're happy with it, you don't have any use for Mono. But after being just a Linux user for the better part of two years, I've recently began developing for it - using Mono. In this way I'm able to maximize my skills while actually contributing something. At this point I just don't have the time and energy to learn a completely new language and framework just so I can develop for *nix. Regardless of what *nix developers generally think about us Windows devs, there are quite a few skilled people out there. And the more you can sway to at least try their hand at developing for *nix, the better; after all, it's not about the OS, it's about the apps which run on it, right?

Now if MS comes out and points out copyright violations in GPL code, Novell can't legally distribute it regardless of the deal...
