What you say applies only to a one-sided Free Market. The solution is to have open borders: free market for labor as well as capital. People will then chose what is best for them, giving you universal Freedom, Democracy, Human Rights, and whatnot.

My point exactly; there is no such thing as a "Russian job" unless you live in Soviet Union (where you were guaranteed a job, with a few caveats you have mentioned).

In America, we have no "American jobs" save for a few government and security positions. The rest is up for grabs by whoever can do it the cheapest legal way. If you don't like Free Market then go to China or start your own Union.

Why do you assume that China needs resources for the same reason as the United States?

Living in the Third World country they are, the Chinese are starting to invest into R&D at the levels comparable to the United States. They are currently leading in fusion research and in certain communications apps. They are investing heavily in monorail/magLev trains. Their immigration policies allow outside scientists, including expatriates, to easily live and work in the country.

All this while the United States' research funding is not just stagnant, but does not even adjust for inflation.

Why don't you go live in Soviet Union if you want to be guaranteed a right to work? Oops, too late...

Or if you want each American to be guaranteed a job, go lobby your Congress to pass a law or to ratify the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights in its entirety (See article 23&24: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_rights ). You'd probably not like that last option since it outlaws discrimination anyways.

Current immigration crisis resulted from our borders being closed to the skilled people while open to the low-skill illiterate border-crossers. Hence, we have a surplus of cheap dirtfarmers placing a huge strain on our teachers, doctors, policemen. If you let high-skilled people immigrate proportionately to the low-skilled Mexicans (at least one doctor, teacher, policeman, scientist per 100 immigrants, for example), it will all even out.

As long as the overall skilled/unskilled ratio remains good, then more laborers also means more demand for housing, food, appliances, and transportation, which means more jobs for everybody. Consider that since 1900's we have trippled the population of America (from 100M to 300M), but we also live a hell of a lot better than 100 years ago. So, more workers does not have to mean less prosperity...

I get your argument about scores of people living in the same apartment, but the only reason they do is because they are saving money to send to their kids locked up back home by the visa restrictions and whatnot. Otherwise, minimum wage, workplace safety, maximum occupancy and delapidated (sp?) housing laws are already in place to take care of the few abberant nutcases. Don't you think the immigrants are trying to come here exactly because they do not want to live in "Third World" conditions?
