Look, it is all about the revenue these laws and regulations generate from the tickets they issue.
Why is everything the government doing a conspiracy issue?
IF you were right, then the government WOULD be outlawing cups in a car. Yes, for many people, a cup or food in the car is a distraction. But a cell phone, or a tv monitor is a much larger distraction. I can eat and drink without taking my eyes off the road. It is hard to use anything with a monitor without taking your eyes off the road.
I want to be able to use my devices for whatever the fuck I want.
You only think you do. Do you visit Flash sites with your toaster? Do you connect a USB device to your DVD player? An iPad is an appliance that does a lot of things.
I think it's time to admit that you're a hoarder..
Why is it so hard to believe that people have a lot of pics and home movies? Just because you want to save your pictures of your kids first birthday, doesn't make you a hoarder.
Yes. Yes you do. Do you really want to delete all those pics and home movies of your child's first birthday?
There are three main things I back up. My source code. My pics. My home movies. I also back up my personal documents, but they really aren't as important.
When people talk about needing entire drives for their personal data backups, I have to wonder: WTF have you got ON there?
Pictures and Movies (no not hollywood movies)
As ccds get bigger picture images get larger. I'm not a pro photographer, but I can still generate several gigs of pictures in a weekend. I also shoot hd movies. Fortunately these aren't as big, but they add up. I recently started my offsite backup and I had cover to 500G of stuff I didn't want to lose. I can see a pro photographer (or even an amateur) or someone shooting more video than me, having a bit more.
Before I started backing my pictures up, I was backing up my source code, and my personal document directory. I was using a free 2G account.
When you create stuff, you want to keep it forever. Pictures and movies are large nowadays. Sure I can go through my pictures and delete a bunch that I don't want. But if any of them are of my kids, they aren't getting deleted... EVER.
You aren't doing a proper backup if the data stays with you. Of course if something happens to you, perhaps you no longer care about your data.
To protect your backup properly you have to trust someone. Whether that is the lock box at the local bank, or your friends bedroom closet. You should be storing your backup somewhere else.
Someone asked for recommendations on how to backup his data. And you are surprised when people gave him an answer?
I use crashplan. They have a service, where they'll send you a 1TB harddrive to seed your backup. Of course this is a problem if you have more then 1TB or you have a LOT of churn.
Another option is a couple of external drives that you keep at the office or a friends house, or the bank.
What? Patents are broken because the average person doesn't understand the patent? Perhaps we shouldn't have lawyers writing patents, as apparently only lawyers can understand them. But that doesn't mean patent's are broken.
Patents are broken because they given out for obvious concepts. One problem with software patents, is the implementation is patentable, not the final result.
TFS claims that plenty of projects take in millions of dollars. And then points to an article that list 7 (about half) that take in at least a million dollars. And these projects have thousands of volunteers. Sure a handful of people are taking home some bacon. But the majority of the people contributing are not.
Why? What is wrong with trademarks? I don't see anything here that is cause for reform for trademarks.
there are a LOT of words you can use, to compete against the company that trademarked that word.
Trademarks also don't always hold up in court.
That carries no legal weight. The fact of a copyright is something determined by law, not by "agreement"
You don't have to AGREE to it. When an entity owns a copyright on something, they can grant others permission to copy (that is the definition of the word copyright) What they are saying is "We are not granting you permission." You can of course not agree with it, but then you would be breaking copyright laws.
Trademark is similar. They are not giving you permission to use their trademark's, except as spelled out in their Brand Usage Guidelines. I haven't read these guidelines but I am willing to bet they are actually looser than the actual trademark guidelines. What does it mean if you don't agree? Facebook can sue you. Cause it really isn't about what YOU agree to, it is what the law is how it related to trademark. If I have a trademark on something. And you use it, I can sue you, and will probably win, whether or not you "agree" to anything.
, because you agreed to not use the word "Wall" without their permission.
No, no you didn't. You agreed not to use their TRADEMARK "Wall" without their permission (which as I believe you pointed out is according to trademark law) You can use the work "wall" all you want. As long as you don't try to use it in violation of Facebook's trademark. Facebook can't possibly get a trademark on "Wall" in regards to a physical brick wall, because they don't make or sell one.
Microsoft never tried to PATENT "windows." The tried to trademark it. Completely different thing. They aren't the same. They aren't related. Trademarks generally actually work, and aren't a bad thing. (well copyrights and patents aren't exactly bad either, but there issues. copyrights are too long, patents given too freely) trademarks are a different beast. They cost money, they aren't given out willy nilly. They don't confer a monopoly, they don't last a lifetime. AND you have to actively defend your trademark or you can lose it. That means you can't be a "trademark troll."
No reasonable person would accept 'book' as a copyright/mark.
No reasonable person would accept a common word, like ohh "word" (or "windows") as a trademark...
Ohh wait, they do, they can, because it has NOTHING to do with copyright. And everything to do with what a trademark is all about. You trademark a phrase or a word or an image, and you use it in relation to your business. It doesn't prevent people from using the same word. It doesn't prevent people from using the word in other areas. but it prevents your competitors from using the word or phrase.
Look, it is all about the revenue these laws and regulations generate from the tickets they issue.

Apparently they don't consider "how to play the game" as part of the game. Hit i,j,k,l (well any key really)
I want to be able to use my devices for whatever the fuck I want.
You only think you do. Do you visit Flash sites with your toaster? Do you connect a USB device to your DVD player? An iPad is an appliance that does a lot of things.
I can get a brand new iPad2 for $399. Why would I want a refurb for $350?
You do realize that it is probably much cheaper to just buy a new hard drive and copy everything, than to go through the process you outlined?
Maybe he's a film maker or prolific but unpublished musician.
Or maybe he takes a lot of pictures of his kids.
I think it's time to admit that you're a hoarder..

Software patents are pure acts of fraud.... its provable
Ok, so just how are software patents pure acts of fraud?

This program existed in it's earliest form in 1996.
So your "prior" art came into being a year after the patent was filed?
