  3. Let me get this of my chest... on Ubuntu 9.04 Daily Build Boots In 21.4 Seconds · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've been using Ubuntu for I year. I was quite happy with the 8.4, but unfortunately I've switched to 8.10 64bit (to support 4GB RAM). You know what? I couldn't care less about how fast it boots. I do, however, care about these things:
    - switching from dual display to presentation (clone) and back totally messes up x config, I have to uninstall and reinstall nvidea drivers
    - in dual screen mode, nautilus opens on the first display. I have to open terminal and run nautilus& to lunch it on the second display
    - in dual screen mode, keyboard keeps focus in the previous screen. I have to minimize/maximize a windows on the "new" screen to move keyboard focus
    - RDP client crashes X windows in some cases (it does not close the drop down list of used servers... and bang)
    - oh and NO it's not AN ERROR if I close the RDP window. If I want to reconnect, I will, don't hide under my active windows and bring RDP windows back in 30 seconds. That's just plain stupid.
    - java and window decorations don't play well together (popups without buttons etc.)
    - How about opening a connection to a new server in a new tab, not in a new nautilus window?
    - Flash stops working. I just see a gray square where flash is supposed to be.
    - Firefox is not very stable.
    - Windows would become gray and unresponsive when there's a lot of disk activity.
    - I've seen ubuntu crash on my much more times than I've seen BSOD on the same HW.
    - If i lock my computer, I want it to be locked. I don't want it to be locked for a minute or so and than display what was last on my desktop. Sure, you'd have to log in to get access, but there could be things for my eyes only on that screen. So don't you ever roll eyes on windows security, ok? You've got your own issues.

I could probably think of more but this is just a list of things I remember from the top of my head. Sure, you'll be downmoding me and say I'm trolling. Maybe I am. But my point is: there are MUCH more IMPORTANT things to fix than the FUCKING BOOT TIME. Who the fuck even cares about boot time?? Can't you just grab a coffee while it boots? What kind of idiotic metric is this?

I guess SW development is hard and complex. And we've reached a point where maintaining these beasts is hard, for either open source or commercial products.

I've spent the summer in the US - I come frome Europe - and it's just ludicrus how big everything is. You don't HAVE to eat THAT GIANT ICECREAM, you don't have to drink THAT FREE COKE (omg, the crasiest thing i saw was this "extreme gulp"; that's just plain stupid; don't tell me you have no idea how you got fat!?). Not to mention your sandwiches... I saw a sandwitch maid of an entire loave!? while the "Poor boy's" sandwich was enough for me. You get the picture.

Anyway, I didn't gain any weight while in the US. You know, they sell great ingridinets in your marts, far better than I get over here. Well yes, cooking just a simple pasta meal could be more expensive than eating at /put your favorite junk food here/. But it's far FAR better and won't get you fat.

Now that I'm thinkink about it I remember how confused I was the first coulple of days in the US. There was food all around, yet I was starving and just couldn't find anything to eat. I don't eat junk food at home (well, I like burek [http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/548041/2/istockphoto_548041_burek_a_greasy_meal.jpg] from time to time), rather I'd go to a quite inexpensive restaruant where i can get pizza, pasta, steaks etc. for like 4-5.
You are virtually surrounded by junk food, everywhere.

And.. walk people, walk! It won't hurt you to walk a few blocks (e.g. from a hotel to a metro station). And no, it's not dangerous. I felt as safe over there as I do in Europe.

Oh, and, btw, THIS is how coffee should be served http://www.gastronova.pl/images/stories/oferta/dla_biura/capuccino.jpg

  11. Two reasons on Humans Hardwired to Believe in Supernatural Deity? · · Score: 1

I beleive there are two major reasons for the "god" and the "afterlife" concepts: 1. it's very hard to accept that in the next moment you can just cease to exist. Just try to imagine it. It's very strange and maybe even scarry. 2. Politics. Most religions promise you the afterlife. It's not really hard to figure why. I mean, if your soliders knew (and beleived) they lived their one and only life they'd most probably find a better way to enjoy it than to die for some useless political goals. So, you have to offer them something: - reincarnation (just read the first few pages of the Bhagavad Gita and you'll understand) - endless life in heaven - virgins in the garden of eaden (I recommend reading Alamut by Vladimir Bartol; it's a fiction but worth reading) OK, maybe 3: Not beeing able to explain a perfectly natural phenomena (like drought etc.), which has a negative impact on a person or society. "This year there's no crops due to drought, I must have done something wrong to uppset the God. I'l sacrifise my youngest daughter to see if it helps." I'd thought we'd get past this stage by now, but... Since most people have problem accepting their death and / or live empty miserable lifes, religion kicks in nicely. I doubt it's genetics. And if it is, it's most defenitly a bug. On a side note: I do have my own little philosophy that hepls me accpet my death: in order to acknowledge you've died, you'd have to live past the moment of your death. Since that is most probably not the case, you'll never know you've died. But if you DO acknowledge your death, there must be some kind of afterlife. See, you just can't die!

Since I was modded off-topic, I have to explain why I posted this.

I think the morality of the western society is based on some - so called - Christian values. Some of the EU countries even insist on putting Christian roots in the future EU constitution. AFAIK the US of A is established on the same values and different Christian lobbies are quite strong over there (I could be wrong).

The problem is, we are served just the convenient part of the values. Lot, for instance, was never punished for his "sins" - having sex with his own daughters, who could be under age (I don't remember this detail).

Since laws are (or should be) based on general morality and values, I am on topic.
