This is quite frankly rubbish. He does not give any links to the exact details of the test, but a lot of waffle hinting something that is known already. The LHC is built to test High energy Physics theories, and some aspects of these theories will influence factors in string theory. So what? This article says nothing of particular consequence. and stop complaining about a 'new improved string theory' - that is the point of science, to come up with better and better theories. Just because one was not discarded but modified, it doesn't invalidate it until disproven. /rant over.

vacuum contains particles which arise in matter - anti-matter pairs. These may interact with light before the annihilate each other. Or the poster may have been talking about not being able to obtain the 'perfect' vacuum, just a very very low density gas.

  4. Re:Improvement? on Slow Light = Fast Computing · · Score: 1

Electrons in a current (the drift velocity) move significantly slower than the speed of light. The transfer of charge across a conductor is almost at c. This is because, as a potential is applied, then it causes some charge carriers to move. These in turn cause other charge carriers to move, and so on round your conductor, at a much faster pace than your actual charge carrier pace.

I'm sure we do though! I's the thing about eactly known orbits and intercpet times, and whether the camera is pointing in the right direction - If you could et people to do it, I'm sure you can obtain images of other earth orbiting satellites from said satellites.

Yes, but why should you say which way people research? If String Theory has a valid physical foundation, and there is mathematical interest in it, then you cannot just say that you must not research it on our criteria above. Just think how much of mathematics, and the progress today in Physics that having the developed mathematics gives us, would not be around if you excluded research on your criteria.
