RH interest in OpenJDK has some interesting side effects: they're actively working on porting it also to powerpc, both 32 and 64 bit.
Gary Benson, main RH powerpc developer, is keeping a journal about his work, quite interesting stuff.
As said before there're many choices, each ones with its own pros and cons, so I'll throw this one in: OpenAFS.
As read from the main page:
What is AFS?
AFS is a distributed filesystem product, pioneered at Carnegie Mellon University and supported and developed as a product by Transarc Corporation (now IBM Pittsburgh Labs). It offers a client-server architecture for federated file sharing and replicated read-only content distribution, providing location independence, scalability, security, and transparent migration capabilities. AFS is available for a broad range of heterogeneous systems including UNIX, Linux, MacOS X, and Microsoft Windows
Hope this helps, ciao

it's sad that one of the prominent linux distro is cutting down PPC support, even now that PS3 is out.
hope to see them back on the development/testing stuff.
Or:
"How nice.. an ancient manufact from distant past, can you decipher it?"
"Nope, technology was patented: at the time noone was legally able to read it except for its inventor..."
"How stupid!"
I think someone should point them to the ffmpeg changelog. Actually it does open lots of proprietary formats and VLC uses the same codebase for his own engine.
no it isn't: ibm buy off sources from sun and released them with an even more restrictive license.
Just to make things clear: redistribution of the package is not allowed, building a powerpc distribution without proper java support is a PITA when it comes down to any program which can be built with such enviroment support options.
uhm... as I really don't know how the fs is implemented, I think that reiserfs surely does black magic under my box but why does hans choose a medium for his own defense?!?
there is a risk that VM rootkits can be installed unbeknownst to the consumer
Isn't it an issue that should be taken into consideration by the hosting technology producer? Why MS is ever thinking to take care of someone else technology?
And, by the way, doesn't rootkits already exists for windows OS family? Maybe they should think more about their problems;-)
IANAL, but the ruling in the download page which says: International Use Restrictions
Due to limited intellectual property protection and enforcement in certain countries, the JDK source code may only be distributed to an authorized list of countries. You will not be able to access the source code if you are downloading from a country that is not on this list. We are continuously reviewing this list for addition of other countries
isn't in contrast with GPL promoting source availability?

You forget "not functional"
hi, the problem is not only which size fits better for a livecd.
Surely with 200~MB of livecd it would be plenty of intersting apps but keep in mind that as it is today it can be completely loaded into 128MB of ram which can be reasonably found in older hw and this task will be impossible for a bigger cd.
ciao

Eh, I really hope there will be a linux/powerpc release for java now that's GPLed.

please, try telling this to P.J. Volkerding and then come back here to tell us how it went.
