  1. Unholy Grail on Monty Python Crew To Reunite For Movie · · Score: 1

I believe it will be magnificently difficult for the Pythons to produce something that depends upon the tremendous sense of timing that their brand of comedy requires. What they might want to try is some sort of live production (I know, far smaller audience) involving Robin Williams. And at the risk of a little peril, I'll keep my eyes open for that grail-shaped beacon...

  2. Asteroids Are Not the Threat on International Organization To Assess Earth Defense From Space Dangers · · Score: 2

Large Near Earth Asteroidss are not the real threat to our planet; large comets inbound from the Oort Cloud pose a much greater threat because the response time would be measured in months in a best-case scenario. While conjecture about whether we nuke or bump or tow Near Earth Asteroids is a wonderful way to gain funding for detection and mitigation programs the true threat is being ignored. The impacts of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter left little doubt of what would happen if Earth was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

  3. Surprised? on Post-9/11 DOJ Tech Project Dying After 10 Years? · · Score: 5, Insightful

And how is this any different than any of the programs that followed 9/11? TSA is trampling roughshod over travelers' rights, the Department of Homeland Security is a bloated farce, and the individual's basic rights under the Constitution have been eroded. To say nothing of the years of rendition flights, wars, and torture. I'm certainly glad that we're the "good guys." I wonder what the "bad guys" have been up to.

  8. Re:Nice, but... on Town Turns Off the Lights To See the Stars · · Score: 3, Informative

Bullshit. The myth of lighting for security reasons is just that - a myth. Most outdoor lighting is still horribly inefficient in that it scatters light where it is not needed and wastes energy. And why are people so damned enamored of lighting tall buildings, billboards and street signs from below? There is also a lot of street lighting that doesn't light the street effectively and causes glare in drivers' eyes. Yes, I am an amateur astronomer and outdoor lighting (in general) sucks.

Conservation and transition to alternative sources of energy seem like the way to solve our energy addiction. I'm about half way through my third "trip" in the LOTR. I first read the set when I was 17, again when I was about 35 and now, when I am, well, almost 60. The books may be the same but the change in perspective that comes with age and experience is surprising. I'm kind of looking forward to finishing the books, but I wonder if I'll get the chance to read them all the way through again. As for the Nobel prize; who cares? The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are just plain fun to read.

Now that "No Child Left Behind" is on the run perhaps teachers can focus on teaching students how to think instead of focusing on how to train students to take standardized tests.

I know that I am borrowing information from some of the documentaries that I have watched about the U.S. food industry, but here goes... The American food industry is tailored to the fast-food industry. They are their largest consumer. The corn industry is the most powerful lobby in Washington, they generally get what they want. Your beef comes from cows that were raised mainly on feed that mainly consists of corn products. They don't eat grass, a diet of grass would cleanse their digestive systems of many of the human pathogens (e coli) that end up in our food. High fructose CORN syrup is the main sweetener used in processed food. I work at a job that requires basically sitting at a computer for ten hours a day and I get a half-hour lunch break. I walk for half an hour at lunch every day and eat lunch during one of my other breaks. And I don't eat meat any more and I don't drink soft drinks. Americans are killing themselves and they have their food and health care industries to blame for it. IBM's patent smacks of Big-Brotherism; education would be the key to healthier living. People need to eat healthier and get more exercise. Yes, I am un-American.
