We don't have to worry about no stinkin' supernovae. Even at the speed of light those nasty gamma rays won't catch us, because by the time they get here we will be so, what's that word, oh yeah, extinct.
Yeah, well I would really like Dr. Tyson to push for something really important to get the United States back on its scientific "feet". How about pushing the adoption of the metric system? Our present system of measurement is keeping us years behind other countries. No more conversion. Just adopt it and get it over with. Ever listen to the statements from NASA, our "science" people on space travel. Everything is miles per hour and feet per second and gallons of fuel. Does anyone else see a problem here? And while we're at it, I'm from Kansas and Pluto should still be a planet.
Well, they've had some catching-up to do since they finally have pardoned Galileo and admitted that the Earth is not the center of practically anything.
Near Earth Asteroid collision predictions are relatively straightforward and processes for mitigation are being worked on. That issue is almost too easy and we'll know years if not decades in advance if a relatively large asteroid is a threat. The threat from a large comet approaching the inner solar system is a different issue and one that doesn't lend itself to easy prediction and mitigation. We might have several months to plan for deflection/destruction of a large comet swooping in from the Oort Cloud. Remember those blotches in Jupiter's clouds from Shoemaker-Levy 9? They were produced by cometary fragments.
What's the worst thing that could happen? A "voracious worm" tunnelling near established infrastructure sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Please, someone explain how a surface control room can keep track of a subterranean device using GPS. And then there's that bit under the River Thames...
This is simply more proof that the world is going to hell in a handcart. Do they go after parents reading to their children next? Surely they can renew the copyrights for all the religious texts around the world - that's it! Nothing should attempt to stop the religion of MONEY.
I knew there was somebody out there doing the same thing I do! I bet you even stop at those octagonal red signs while everyone else just rolls through. What truly sucks about the whole camera arrangement is that there are places (roads near schools come to mind) that would benefit from having actual police officers in cars or, shudder, walking or bicycling.
The America of our founders? You mean the one that practised slavery and genocide. Is that the wonderful past you are referring to? Be careful what you base your opposition to TSA on.
Or they'll lead to a more terrible war. Despite the end of the Cold War there are huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons. And there are countries like India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel and perhaps Iran that are part of the nuclear "club."
Yeah, but do you know how the Moon was formed? Something roughly the size of Mars took a Moon-sized chunk out of the Earth. I'll take the solar flares, please.
I can't agree strongly enough with the statement that, if you're driving you shouldn't be doing anything else. I ride a bicycle frequently and if I get run over by a texting driver then I'm dead. If one of my two kids gets run over by a texting driver there won't be a straight-jacket strong enough. And police enforcement is a joke in the U.S. From what I have observed they'll run the occasional speed trap or alcohol enforcement exercise, but I see a lot less police presence on the roads these days and much more careless driving. I guess that cars have gotten so safe that law enforcement no longer need to do their job.
It's the stuff they capture the news on. We have to wait for the planes carrying film in order to get news from other countries since the same people that didn't launch people to the Moon also didn't create a constellation of geosynchronous satellites.
Now that the United Corporations of America is slipping steadily towards becoming the world's next police state, the use of UAVs to spy on its citizens should have been expected.
They're attempting to build a space program in reverse order. There needs to be a stable base of science and technology in place before attempting a more ambitious program such as a moon base. The American space agency (NASA) squandered its expertise on the shuttle program and would need to make huge changes in its engineering and managerial structure to support what would amount to a new program. Perhaps the best approach would be placing an spacecraft assembly station in LEO and assemble components for a moon program outside of Earth's gravity. We've got our heads stuck in 20th century technology - we don't need a monstrous rocket to take us directly to the Moon. And the current ISS is so encumbered with short-sighted ideas that it would be laughable if it weren't so sad; it was the last excuse to continue the STS program.

It's so damned refreshing so see the term "tolerances are measured in thousandths of an inch". AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!

Yes, they're doing asteroid searches, too. But what, at this moment, appeals to the lowest common denominator scientifically uninformed American mind?
Well, the guy who almost single-handedly caused Pluto to be relegated to Minor Planet status should know a thing or two about planetary destruction...
Well, he did just publish a book..

What's a foot?
All they have to do is wait for the mayhem to commence!

The Aurora is darned difficult to see with full Moon in the sky.

Unfortunately the U.S. is now a nation of sheep. We had one revolution here. We're now going out with a whimper.

They just can stand to see a robot do what a person go do, only better. And the robot doesn't need a life support system. Or a round trip ticket.

Trust them. They know what they're doing. What could possibly go wrong?

Well it costs a lot of money to promote peace and democracy with the barrel of a gun.
