Yeah, well I would really like Dr. Tyson to push for something really important to get the United States back on its scientific "feet". How about pushing the adoption of the metric system? Our present system of measurement is keeping us years behind other countries. No more conversion. Just adopt it and get it over with. Ever listen to the statements from NASA, our "science" people on space travel. Everything is miles per hour and feet per second and gallons of fuel. Does anyone else see a problem here? And while we're at it, I'm from Kansas and Pluto should still be a planet.

Near Earth Asteroid collision predictions are relatively straightforward and processes for mitigation are being worked on. That issue is almost too easy and we'll know years if not decades in advance if a relatively large asteroid is a threat. The threat from a large comet approaching the inner solar system is a different issue and one that doesn't lend itself to easy prediction and mitigation. We might have several months to plan for deflection/destruction of a large comet swooping in from the Oort Cloud. Remember those blotches in Jupiter's clouds from Shoemaker-Levy 9? They were produced by cometary fragments.

If one of my two kids gets run over by a texting driver there won't be a straight-jacket strong enough. And police enforcement is a joke in the U.S. From what I have observed they'll run the occasional speed trap or alcohol enforcement exercise, but I see a lot less police presence on the roads these days and much more careless driving. I guess that cars have gotten so safe that law enforcement no longer need to do their job.

They're attempting to build a space program in reverse order. There needs to be a stable base of science and technology in place before attempting a more ambitious program such as a moon base. The American space agency (NASA) squandered its expertise on the shuttle program and would need to make huge changes in its engineering and managerial structure to support what would amount to a new program. Perhaps the best approach would be placing an spacecraft assembly station in LEO and assemble components for a moon program outside of Earth's gravity. We've got our heads stuck in 20th century technology - we don't need a monstrous rocket to take us directly to the Moon. And the current ISS is so encumbered with short-sighted ideas that it would be laughable if it weren't so sad; it was the last excuse to continue the STS program.
