  1. Do whats right for your business on Best IT-infrastructure For a Small Company? · · Score: 1

I'll make this as simple as possible. 1) Make sure you understand what exactly its is you need and how it relates to your core business. 2) Leased services and SaaS have their place but not for core business needs. Most commonly you are nothing more than a cash cow to a company that is now in control of your resources. 3) Build relationships. My best experiences have been with Dell, Time Warner Telecom, and Barracuda Networks. 4) If you have a mobile workforce then go laptops. 5) Sounds like 1 Server running ESXi and a NAS would suit you nicely.

This is by far the wisest route on the issue. I would just add that you "could" notify your legal department of it and leave it to them to handle. It is their responsbility to deal with legal issues of all kinds. For your part you just need to make a reasonable attempt to resolve the situation through your appropriate chain of command. If they arean't interested document your findings and move on.

If you bring this up and the BSA comes callign when managment doesn't act your almost garanteed to experiance some kind of retaliation.

As someone who works with Asset software i garantee the effort of cleaning up your asset's and tracking everything is well worth it. You could always pitch the cost savings of such a system by reducing waste and overpurchasing.

  3. Innovators are born, not learned on IT Job Without a Degree? · · Score: 1

Your ability to get into a good IT career will always depend on your experience and personality. Technology is unique as achievment is based on your passion and willingness to learn. It is possible to find a good job without a degree, but propably not your first job. To begin you should seek an opening position in some form of IT support role like tech support, helpdesk, call center, etc... This will help establish yourself and provide proof of your willingness to do the work.

Don't let people discourage you, a real interviewer knows that in today's world there's more to an employee than a degree or fancy resume. A resume only gets you a conversation, the rest is up to you. If you can prove you have a compatible personality and relevant experience then your on the right track. Anyone who is so close minded that believes a degree is the only way to prove your worth, is probably not the person you want to work for.

A non-compete clause only pertains to cases where the change would put you in direct competition. By building a product made and marketed for a different customer base you negate the direct competition issue.

I did 3 1/2 years of tech support and graduted it IT which i did for 7 1/2 and then to where I am now doing Consulting. I have to agree that the key is to establish yourself and raise in the ranks. If you can't manage to move up from a Helpdesk most will assume your incapable. What you need to do is seek out responsibilties, move to Tier 2 or 3 and get into some form of leadership role. This could be a team lead, prject manager, or technical lead on a couple large scale projects. Then when you interview focus on work you did that was above and beyond your job description.

Phones are for monkeys and the key is to prove you are more capable and evolved.
