Yes it does have the motion sensing. If you read the keynote, when Kaz announced it he started off talking about how originally they thought there would be technical issues with having rumble and motion sensing but they have overcome those issues and have both in the new controller.
Apparently Kaz isn' a fan of the WarioWare Series, since Nintendo was able to do both in 2003 (when the game shipped in Japan). Perhaps he wasn't lying, and it had nothing to with Legal issues, maybe Nintendo has better engineers than Sony.
I'm inclined to believe Sony at this point, not because I trust them, but because I don't think a price drop is in their best interest. They're already losing some $300 per unit, why lose another $100, when they can claim pack-in bundles and shit like that?
Because (using your math) if they are losing $300 per unit on a $600 unit, that's $900 lost for every unit that continues to sit on the self. Also being last place in the "Next Gen" race since the day the Wii Launched doesn't help either. They need to get their price down to the $300-$399 range fast if they hope to be anything but a niche this gen.
Oh hey, I just remembered there's a counterexample to the rule -- the Wii Classic controller also has the dpad up and the left analog down. Oddly enough, it too has historical baggage in the sense that it is designed to play games which range from the NES to the GC. Like the Dual Shock, it's designed with the d-pad as primary for that reason, though in my brief experience with it I think it's even less comfortable than Dual Shock. Good thing I have my GC controller -- though I'll probably use the wiimote for NES titles, since using the DPad on the GC controller is just as uncomfortable as using the analog stick on the Dual Shock.
That is an excellent point, however I don't mind the classic controller for the Wii for the reason that's it's primary use is for 2D gaming. All systems in the Virtual console that use it (with the exception of the N64) were made to be 2D systems, and though they tacked on the analogs so you could play the N64 games that way if you liked, the GameCube controller is the superior choice for 3D gaming.
Us people in the know have been very harsh on Sony about Heavenly Sword's length, but you know what, all the common video game consumer friends I have with a PS3 have called me up to ask if I absolutely loved the game as much as them... and when I tried to explain that it was great but short, most of them told me in a matter of fact way that the game was like an epic movie that you got to play, and that being short made sense to them because it kicked ass in the short time it played and it didn't have tons of filler, which they didn't want.
Us 'elite' gamers have been giving it a bad rap, and I know that this is simply anecdotal, but it appears to me that the ho-hum consumer actually appreciates the shortness vs. the content.
The issue is that the game isn't worth the $60, let alone the system cost on top of it. People were banking on this game being a system seller, and it flatly isn't one. People buy systems for games that are truly epic in scale (like an Oblivion, a Zelda, or a Final Fantasy) or for something they simply can't find anywhere else (like WiiSports, or Steel Battalion). They do not buy a system for a game that they can rent, beat in a weekend and feel satisfied due to no real replay value.
This game isn't a system seller. It's something that is fun, and enjoyable and I would recommend it as a RENT to PS3 players who enjoyed God of War, but were turned off by its length, difficulty or depth.
preface: i own all 3 current gen consoles...
i love how the ps3 and wii guys take shots at each other and the xbox crowd. all of their arguments are hardware based because they have no games to argue about.
now...what do i want to play today on my 360....decisions, decisions...
Halo 3, Mass Effect, Too Human, Fable 2, the next Burnout game, the Warhammer RTS, the next Splinter Cell, the Orange Box, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Fallout 3...
Seriously. There is WAY more coming out for the system than Halo 3...why do people keep focusing on just that?
What? No love for 2007's GOTY? Not to outright disrespect the other games, but I'll probably put more time into that than Halo3, Smash Bros and Warhawk combined.
Ok, I missed Rumble (at least in MotorStorm), but please can you fix a few other things while you're at it?
1) Sixaxis Tilt is Not nearly sensitive enough to be useful. Please figure out a Fix or Hire someone who worked on ExciteTruck to do it for you.
2) The R2 & L2 Buttonie-trigger thing. Either make them proper buttons (like L1, R1), or triggers (like the 360), don't care which but this inbetween solution you have now is bad.
3) Swap the left Analog and Dpad. MS, Nintendo and Sega all did so because it is more comfortable to play 3D games that way. Bolting the Dual analogs at the bottom made sense in the PS1 era, but not 2 gens later.
4) User replaceable Battery. Make it AAA, AA, or Proprietary; I don't care which so long as I can swap it with another in a few seconds without disassembly.
So, 1 a year then, eh? Sony's been saying the 360's lifespan is about 5 years, since that's how the original XBox went. If they're correct (and I think they probably are) then there's 4 years left to produce 3 games... Pretty tight, if you plan to actually make changes to the engine. Not so bad if you just plan to change the levels and plot.
Probably 1 every other year, which seems about right. Console life cycles are in the 5-6 year range (unless you're Sega). MS went out in 4 years just to get a jump on the competition. The question is do you want that 3rd one to be one of the Swan songs of the platform (Like God of War II) or one of the Launch titles for the new one and use the new tech available?
If they do break up the trilogy between 2 platforms (which is likely), would it make so much of a difference if the other 2 remain Backwards compatible? (preferably like the Metroid Prime Series, and not the Halo series. Being able to use the original saves files is important especially on games this big.)
Are my reading skills failing me, or did I see the word Pilates as one of the games listed? Dance Dance Revolution is one thing, but how in the world do you incorporate a game controller into a long series of leg lifts and crunches?
Don't think of it as a game, it's more like a "Virtual Instructor". Something more dynamic and adaptable than a DVD.
My phrasing was poor, sorry. Lots of people have said that the extra space on bluray discs was a waste for a year or two. With this game and UT3, the dvd format is starting to show its age with the 360. I guess this gap will just grow in the future. With nearly 50 gigs of storage on a dual layer disc, it seems that much premium content can be added for the PS3.
As long as they actually use it for content rather than "just because we can". A good example is Heavenly Sword. They said they FILLED the DISC and even stated there was 10 gigs of Audio on the disc, yet there is MUCH LESS content, than Oblivion (which fits on a DVD9).
If the ESRB went after TES: Oblivion for "nude" add-ons for the PC only and GTA3: SA for an accessable only by hacking portion of the game, theres going to be hell to pay if Sony's PS3 Home gets anything less than a M or AO rating.
Actually no. If it gets any rating it would likely be "E for Everyone" with the disclaimer 'Game Expeiance may change during online play". I doubt there will be anything "Mature" in Home or the toolset, but what the community does with it, may end up on that side.
If the hardware was priced the same, then I think it WOULD be the games that primarily sell a system.
Umm... it is. You have no further to the last generation. The PS2 dominated despite being the weakest of the 3 surviving (non-dreamcast) systems. The Gamecube despite being it's technical superior (in every category but disc capacity), AND cheaper still sold less. The X-box which was IN EVERY Way superior (except disc space, it was a tie) and sold at the same price sold less.
Actually, now that I think of it... If you don't buy a Game console for games... what the hell would you buy it for?
Games to me are meant to be a social experience, preferably with someone in the same room as me... It's not that I don't like single player games... But I'd rather play with friends.
Yup, and with the exception of a few titles (Zelda, RE4, Godfather) that's what I use my Wii for. Local Multiplayer FTW!
Which is probably why I already have the deluxe edition of Rock Band on reserve X_x
Oh, Hell yeah! I've been a fan of Harmonix games (Karaoke Revolution & Guitar Hero) and if this game is half as good as I expect it to be, I don't see how it won't be Game of the Year.
If you look at Metacritic it will show you every 360 game, & PS3 game including the Live arcade ones and an occasional Japanese import, but you will not see reviews for Wii Virtual console games. These games do get reviews from various outlets, do cost money, and do bring value to Wii owners, so why are they excluded? Castelvania: SoTN shows up, why not Mario64 ?
You don't have to hold B for Gamecube games on the Wii. They will automatically ask you if you want to go progressive or not.
I did have the GameCube component cables and never actually questioned it when I got the Wii... And to think I've been Holding down B all this time like a Sucker...:( Thanks for the tip.
I bought a 360 recently and besides Gears of War I'm having a very very hard time justifying spending $60 for pretty much anything on the shelf right now... But then I'm pressed for time and so very selective about games in general... Don't have a lot of time to play a game in hopes it'll work out in the end...;)
I tried it on an HD-ready Plasma - no fucking difference.
Tried it on my video projector (usually, the PS3 or the 360 are in the home cinema room, because THESE consoles really shine in that regard) - um... yeah... if you look REALLY HARD, there *is* a tiny little smidge of difference.
The 480p cables are not worth the money IMHO. (this coming from a guy who spent 16000 euros on his rig!)
Did you set it to output in 480p in the settings? There is a difference (I have a plasma and a projector also) in the amount of clarity, crispness and fluidity in everything. You will get better looking textures, clearer text, more fluid animations and action, what you won't get however is any more Anti-aliasing. The game will still have "jaggies".
Also of note, The Wii component cables allow Progressive Scan on GameCube games. Just hold down the "B" button as they boot up, and it will prompt you if you want to use Progressive Scan.
More interestingly, the N64 games seem to be faring somewhat better. The Zelda games, Starfox or Mario Kart are still a lot of fun to play... Comparing F-Zero 64 to Wipeout is an eye-opening experience. I think Sony must have put us under some kind of spell back then. Otherwise, I have no explanation for why we used to think these games were competing on the same level.
Rose-tinted sunglasses. Most people recall how they were blown away by the CG movies in FF7, but seem to conveniently forget about the asstastic graphics for the rest of the game.
I'm not discrediting Wii Sports. I like it, I play it, and I think it's something truly unique and different. I hadn't been aware that people are buying Wiis just to play Wii Sports, but my post was not meant in any way to belittle the game.
No worries. Sorry to come off harsh. It wasn't meant as a snipe on you, just an observation that people discount the game. WiiSports is selling systems (to people who otherwise wouldn't buy one) but it gets no respect since the hard core snub it.
Fun Facts: Pokemon outsells Grand Theft Auto (consistently) and Nintendogs (all versions combined) sold better than Halo 2 (and nearly as much as Halo 1 & 2 combined).
The Wii actually has the best library at the moment, with Super Paper Mario, Zelda (sort of, it's available on the Cube too), Metroid Prime 3, and Wii Sports (even if it is only a pack-in).
WiiSports "only" a pack-in? WiiSports is a "System-Seller" . It shouldn't be discounted, simply because it doesn't fit with the hard-core audience's definition of an "epic game".
People are buying the Wii specifically to play WiiSports in the same way they do for Final Fantasy or Halo or Mario.
By that reasoning, you're suggesting the we pay Sony for the privilege of not dealing with their pathetic DRM. Isn't there a simpler solution?
Well sure, you can boycott whoever you like, and spend your money however you chose. However those who are still going to buy Warhawk anyway should at least send the message that their current DL option for $40 is not acceptable.
The $60 version isn't bad (I bought it), though if the $40 DL version was the only version available I'd pass. Given the restrictions I'd pay "up to" $10 for it, but otherwise no. Their DRM stips too much of the value away.
Hmm. I wasn't aware of that. All of my friends who play WoW have spent hundreds on their machines. Plus I only have a laptop at the moment, so...yeah. Thanks, though, I'll look a bit more into it for when I build a new system.
Was making a more general point, though.
Blizzard typically makes games that require "low specs" to play so they have a large potential audience. Any machine that's "relatively new" can run WoW with no problems. If you want to check, there's a Game Advisor on the Games for Windows page (if you are using IE 6 or higher) that has a DB of games, and it'll scan your PC (as long as you allow the ActiveX control) to test your machine's compatibility with that game.
Not because it's a bad game, but Sony fucked the Value proposition with the downloadable version by overpricing it, and crippling it with DRM. If this is how they plan to introduce full downloadable games then it won't grow nearly as big or as fast as they think.
The BluRay version (the one worth buying) comes with a Blue Tooth Headset, manual, packaging, etc... (which includes your ability to loan it out or trade / resell it). You also have the ability to play it splitscreen multiplayer, via Lan, or online. Also retailers can discount it in an attempt to get you into their store vs the next one.
The Downloadable version (for a grand savings of $20) can't be discounted or shared and locks the purchase to your account. You can't loan it, trade it, sell it and thanks to the dumbest implementation of DRM I've seen you can't even share it with someone locally on your couch. According to Sony, they didn't pay for the right to play it, so they can't play splitscreen multiplayer with you on the same machine (not even if they use a sub account under the master account that bought it).
Warhawk is a lot of fun despite having no single player campaign, but please, please, please buy the BluRay version and don't support this kind of DRM bullshit.
WHY the HELL NOT?!?!?!

Get Oblivion Game of the Year Edition It could be the only game in your collection and still justify your 360 purchase.
