I own a PSP, but I have no idea how I would play that game on it. I have no PS3, and after having to put up with the PSP, I'm sure as hell not going to buy one. Do I need a PS3 to put PS games on the PSP?
As dumb as it sounds, yes. The kicker is that you need the PS3 as a download gateway so your PSP can download it, but once you buy that game through their store, (and download it on your PS3) you can't play that PS1 game on your PS3. This will likely get sorted out as someone pulls their head out of their ass at Sony, and issues a new firmware, but currently that's what you get.
Although, if you would rather bypass Sony entirely there are
other methods of playing PS1 games on your PSP.
From what I understand, they haven't updated the graphics at all, which is a pity.:(
They have upgraded the graphics, and reworked the levels so they fit widescreen better. They ALSO offer the 'Original mode' or whatever they call it, so if you prefer the new look, run with it. If you like the classic run with it.
the first things he asked was "can you play online?" I just answered "sort of..." because I *suppose* that is going to be the case (I hope...).
The anwser is yes. The Wii is an online console, but currently in the US there are no online multiplayer games (Elebits uses Wiiconnect24 but not for multiplayer). Of those announced Pokemon Battle Revolution, Battalion Wars, and Super Mario Strikers, and Animal Crossing were are all announced to have online multiplayer.
... of course I liked the game but after playing that, wii sports, wii play, red steel and Zelda I NEED something that feels more mature and its just not there (I am planning to buy one of those racing games like NFS or GT ).
If you honestly need an 'M rated fix' -Godfather Black Hand Edition for Wii comes out in March, 2007 and has very violent motion controls added.
Scarface was also announced to be coming to the Wii this summer. The system may not have it all right now (After all the Wii is just over 2 months old), but there's lots in the pipeline.
They have publicly stated that they expect the PS3 to have 10 year life cycle.
That doesn't mean there won't be a PS4 out before then though. They stated they wanted a 10 year life cycle for the PS2 as well, (which given the install base they may acheive) but 6 years into it they launched the PS3. This wasn't Sony's decision however, they were pretty much backed into launching a console (before it was ready) from Nintendo and MS's new launches.
2) 360 Owners - $400 is a lot to drop on a console that'll be obsolete in so short a time. Aside from being natively backwards compatible with 360 titles, the 720 would have to throw a bone to previous Xbox users.
Actually, I think that was one of the reasons the 360 HDD is user replaceable. If they Do make a '720' that is not only BC compatable with the games, but the Hardware (like the HDD, the HD cables, the Wireless controllers, etc...) then that would go pretty far in helping early adoption.
And this is of course assuming that the PS3 truely DOES have better graphics.
Which is contrary to current data. Current 360 games look better than current PS3 games.
Of course, the first round of 360 games looked like crap too, so realistically it will be a year before that verdict can be delivered.
I don't buy that. Today, the 360 has better graphics than the PS3, and is $200 cheaper. Next year the PS3 will be on their second gen games looking better, but the 360 will be on their 3rd looking even better. If there is still a $200 price difference, then Blu-Ray must REALLY be important to you... or you are in an area that gets new PS3 titles but only year old+ X-box 360 games...
Usually I don't feed the troll, but it's a slow day.
So if the hardware price is equal, why would the consumer be enough of an idiot to get stuck on a closed system and pay 20% more for all their content. Consoles are aimed at people who can not afford full fledged open hardware apart from the minority technology collectors and as the price has risen it has started to squeeze them out.
Though I disagree wildly about your characteization of PC gamers vs. Console gamers here are a few reasons for Console ownership:
1) It just works. No drivers, no compatibility issues. You either own the system or you don't.
2) Couch > Computer chair.
3) Bigger Screen.
4) Better sound system. (Many people who have a home thater setup, stick with the sterio sound on their computer.)
Let alone a full range of free games available for PC as well as an ever growing number of free on line games.
Just try selling a PC that only uses software approved by one company, only plays content approved by one company, and only uses hardware approved by one company and only connects to one companies version of the internet.
I think you just desribed the Sparc IV from Sun Microsystems.
Sony and Microsoft need to lower their prices big time if they ever hope to outlast what the Wii is capable of. If sales continue through 2007, the Wii will be the next "Playstation".
Personally I'd rather think of the Wii being the next NES. :-)
the "lack of HD" is really lack of 720 and 1080 resolutions, though supposedly the hardware could put out 720i but nintendo doesn't allow it in firmware because game performance would be unacceptable at those resolutions
The Wii does 480p (and 16:9) which by Definition is EDTV. 720, and 1080 are HD. The PS2 and X-Box has a few games in 720p, and even 1080i. Since the Wii more powerful than the X-Box 1, there isn't a technical reason why they can't support this.
The Wii (like the Gamecube) won't support HD due to a management decision, not due to technical limitations. Granted if the Wii did support 720p, we still wouldn't be getting games that look like Gears of War.
I'm pretty sure it is just a ROM dump with a good emulator built into the Wii. I cant give exact numbers, since its measured in "blocks", but there are no manuals, no additional content, nothing.
There's a manual in every VC game. While you have the game loaded, hit 'Home' then 'Operations Guide'.
There's load of possibilities. All of these board and puzzle games can be readily exploited and actually make more sense to some people who use a Wiimote. OTOH, I see more online multiplayer titles as a smart move.
I agree. If they bring online Monopoly, Risk, Uno... or other games casual players might have played already, it would go very far.
What's wrong with the oldie-but-goodie Bomberman '93 now available for download, complete with 5-player joy if you have a WaveBird lying around?
Nothing at all. However if they introduced a Bomberman where you could import Mii's and play up to 8 players localy (using 4 remotes, and 4 GC controllers) I'd buy it in a second.
If it was online... The world would unite, and sing a song in perfect harmony.
If there's one thing that the Wii downloadable content doesn't need right now, it's more shoot em ups.
Funny thing is I have been CRAVING these types of games for a long time, and was pissed they stopped being popular. The first few I bought right away, but even now I'm like... Ok guys... Space these out a little and bring some more Genres in... How about a strait up traditional RPG?
What, are you passively bragging that you got your Wii at launch?
Nope, not bragging. I was responding to the prior post about possible overheating issues of an 'always on console'. I felt that 2 solid months of being on 24/7 without any issues was relevant to that discussion.
Well, not to be a complete pedant, but if you don't own a GameCube already, then you do need a controller to play the GameCube games. Still, considering those can be had for $15 to $20, or $30 for a WaveBird, that's a small price to pay to essentially own a GameCube.
True. To be fair it isn't solely for GC games though, as you can use a Gamecube controller for some Wii games, and All VC titles. You also need a GC memory card as you cannot use the Wii internal save memory for GC games.
This is preferable (for me at least) to the PS3 system where you have to buy an adapter to pull your save files onto the PS3 HD (1 way transfer). At least with the Wii, I can take my memory card with me to use on a different GC.
Had RedOctane published a Guitar Hero game on the GameCube, the Wii would currently have the distinction of being the only one of the new consoles to be able to play the game.
True. The Wii does have the distinction of being the 1st next gen system with a supported dance pad...
For all the store demo booths being in a frozen state that made it impossible to evaluate the console performance.
No. It made it quite easy to evaluate it. The system / demo locked up frequently, and it got to the point where many stores simply turned off their demo machines.
That made the choice of 'buy now, or wait' an easy one.
Now, whats with the "always on"? Arent most devices kept in a low-power standby in which they have instant on? Would you want to keep a game console 'always on'? I sure wouldnt, due to overheating and just plain wear n' tear.
There are many things that are 'Always on', and they are designed for that purpose. Your Refrigerator is 'Always on', My Cable modem, and Router are always on. Cisco Switches are always on. They are because they need to be, and are designed to be.
My Wii has been 'Always on' as part of 'Wii connect' since November 19th. The Wii was designed for this purpose, so it can stay on 24/7 without kicking off cooling fans. I have no idea what Phil means by 'Always on' as the PS3 (or the 360 for that matter) were not design to do this.
I mean that it's just a pointing device in its difference from other controllers that are available. Motion sensing is already available for other platforms. The pointing (and the shape) are the novel features.
No. The motion is different also. Where the Sixaxis recognises tilt, it doesn't detect Pitch or Yaw. If you could make a complete arc with your arm, yet keep your palm / controller level, the Sixaxis wouldn't realized it moved. The Wiimote would.
I'd strongly recommend getting the wireless Gamecube controllers instead of the Classic controllers. At least wireless Gamecube controllers can be used with Gamecube games and they work with all of the VC games. If you buy the Classic controller, okay, it connects to the bottom of the Wiimote, so that makes it wireless, but if you want to play any GC games you'll need to buy GC controllers anyway.
You know, I agree to a point but I like the mix of both.
I have a Gamecube, and I now have 5 Wavebirds. Yeah 5. 4 on the Wii which I use to play Gamecube games on (in progressive scan) and 1 on my Gamecube that is now a full time Gameboy Player. Technically, I'm using 4 Wavebirds and 5 receivers since the GC one is set to the same channel as the player one on the Wii.
Now, I couldn't IMAGINE playing any N64 games with the classic controller, as it is poorly designed for it. The 'Dual Shock Design' is piss poor for use in 3D games. It is however superior for 2D games.
Considering the Virtual console is mostly made up of 8 or 16 bit consoles designed around 2D games, I think it's well worth it to pick up one or 2 classic controllers to get the best experiance with them.
Don't forget Battalion Wars II & Mario Strikers. I'd say they stand out as really great games as well. They are also both online (including Online co-op for BWii). Can't wait.
I don't have much doubt that eventually the graphical differences between the 360 and the PS3 will become clear. In a year or two (or three) there won't be much question that the PS3 has the greater horsepower. The Cell simply has that potential, however excruciatingly difficult it may be to access.
Actually, the PS3's focus really has been Blu-Ray (despite it not being a good move). Many developers have gone on record saying there is no significant power difference between the 360, and PS3. Denis Dyack of Silicon Knights stated flatly that it's a wash since the PS3 has more processing power, but the 360 has more RAM (Something that will not change through the life of the system).
Now Keep in mind that Resistance FoM, doesn't look nearly as good as Gears of War. Ok, fine. It's a '1st wave game' and developers need time to kick around the hardware... So hypothetically speaking, in 2 years they not only look as good as a 360 game (which will always be 'a generation ahead' on the development cycle), they start to consistently look better. That's 3 years into a 4-6 year life cycle for a console. At what point do they start talking about the X-box 480?
The differentiating factors aren't the graphics. Graphics only go so far. If they were the end all, the the PS2 would have been crushed last gen. Sony has Blu-Ray, MS has Live! and Nintendo has 'a new way to play'. That's how the companies will leverage their products.
As dumb as it sounds, yes. The kicker is that you need the PS3 as a download gateway so your PSP can download it, but once you buy that game through their store, (and download it on your PS3) you can't play that PS1 game on your PS3. Supurbly worded. How long have you been an analyst?

Minor nitpick, but C:SotN runs natively on the PS1 and the PS2. It runs through Emulation on the PSP.

Just sayin'
Oh, Shit! Someone warn Sony's PR group before it's too late!
