Put it on the GameCube (or the Wii, I'll get one eventually) and I'll consider it. Maybe for the PS2, but I don't have an XBOX and don't want one yet.
You know... I can't help but Agree that this would be hella fun on the Wii. Infact I have a Wii60 that is hooked to an HDTV (Component cables on both), and if it were multiplatform I would pick the Wii version if it 'put me in the suit' and used the WiiMote as the Proton pack...
In fact I think of Ghostbusters while playing Elebits. HD graphics are nice, but immersion with the WiiMote would trump all.
... Final Fantasy has always been a showboat of pushing graphics and sound, which isn't the direction Wii is going.
Nope. So far no version (including Kingdom Hearts) supports progressive scan, nor do many support even Dolby Prologic II. Pushing graphics and sound (despite looking pretty with great music) was never a priority. If it was last gen they would have done what Techmo did and supported the X-Box exclusively.
I think people underestimate the market's ravenous desire for high-definition gaming.
Interesting. I think Sony / MS are overstating the desires of a (quite vocal) minority. So far Sony had the market crown for 2 generations with the least capable machine. If power = sales we would have gone from N64's to X-boxes.
Its greatest strength (controllers), on the other hand, is something that other people can ape and work with and approach. You can make motion-sensitive (or other novel approach) controllers for the Xbox 360 and PS3...
If Sony / MS create a Wiimote equivalant, it will fail as the system wasn't built around it. Sure it might have some novel games, but it would be like the Eye toy or DDR with a few specific games made for it, and ignored by the rest of the developers/publishers. The Wii has a Wiimote / nunchuck in every box, and allways will, so developers can code with the flexibility of knowing it's there.
Graphics are not everything, but great games like Gears of War show that they can turn a great game into a blockbuster
You know what? Gears is a good game. I like it alot, and it looks good on my plasma TV. You know what else is fun? Final Fantasy. Some might even call it "a blockbuster". That series seems to be doing pretty well despite only being 480i.
It's a superior media in terms of storage capacity and has the managed copy feature.
It has 2 levels of copy protection, and are easier to damage due to a thinner (and not stronger) protective coating. It also doesn't support 1080p over component.
No matter how good the Wii is, good third party dev support is what wins console wars.
Yup. However this is no longer Sony's advantage.
In Japan, when Final Fantasy XIII comes out, there is going to be a rabid fanbase that will purchase the console for that game alone. Others may hold off, but given the other big properties that will shortly follow
The problem is their killers exclusives are both (FFIII & MGS4) 3rd party, and can become multi-platform. We have seen this already with GTA4 and Assassin's Creed. If Sony keeps losing exclusives they are at an increasing disadvantage with the PS3. Not only do they need strong 3rd party support they need exclusives, and they need to be better than the competitions.
the consumer can be easily swayed towards Blu-ray simply by flooding (true) advertisements about the media's technical superiority.
Blu-Ray has larger raw storage capacity per layer than DVD, or HD-DVD. To say it's technically superior however, is debatable.
On a side note, I'd like to point out that despite the fact that I enjoy top notch graphics on the PC, I found that the graphics on the Wii were just as immersive as any I've encountered on the PC.
I hear ya. Especially with the simple graphics of WiiSports, I get totally immersed in Boxing, or Tennis. Personally I hope there are some good RTS's for the Wii to replace my PC gaming simply because my couch beats my computer chair every time. I'm not asking for the world either; StarCraft on the PC was 480p and remains one of my favoirte games.
How is the 360 not relevant? It's got a solid installed base, a lot of great games, strong sales, and a great upcoming lineup. If you think Microsoft is somehow out of the fight, you're either A) a fanboy B) hopelessly misinformed or C) being disingenuous.
or D) Refering to the Japanese market.
Ok, just for the record I'm a Wii60 owner and currently on Gears of War - Act 2, on Insane. I love the 360 and LIVE in particular.
However the 360 has done shit for business in Japan. Nintendo sold more Wii's on Launch day than the 360 sold (in Japan) to date. (400,000 units vs 280,000). I honestly don't know the problem and why Microsoft can't sell to the Japanese, but 2 X-boxes later they still don't understand the market.
I'm not convinced this is actually going to be true. Yes, you need higher-resolution art assets for the PS3 and 360, but I imagine that most developers use them anyway for potential PC ports. On the Wii side, you've got to develop and playtest for a very different controller mechanism, which has got to take some significant time and resources.
Good games are going to be expensive to make, no matter what. I'd be curious to know what Zelda cost to develop versus, say, Oblivion.
I would be interested in the Zelda vs Oblivion costs, but when THQ states
"it was far less expensive making games for Nintendo's console." and that "they could be as little as a third of the high-end next-gen titles... Maybe the range is a quarter to a half." I believe them.
PS3 can run GNU/Linux and all the Free games developed for GNU/Linux by devoted amateurs. Wii requires each developer to be a company with office space detached from the home.
Ok, so you can buy a $600 PS3 that runs linux at the level of an 800 Mhz Pentium 3 ? Ok, I wouldn't do it but some people might.
PWii > Wii60 Although I may end up dropping for a revised Xbox360 in a year or so if that old story was legit.
As a Wii60 owner I disagree, but I'm curious as to why you feel the PSWii is better. The Wii is bar none the best for Local multiplayer fun, and the fact that my retired parents want one is unprecidented.
The 360's biggest selling point for me is X-Box Live. It is a great system and worlds beyond what Sony (or Nintendo) are offering for Free. I also have some Hi-Def content to go with my HDTV, but Live was by far the bigger draw.
The PS3 has a Blu-Ray player. I consider it a wash with the HD-DVD add on for the 360. YES it's nice to have it included, but the modularity means I don't have to buy it if I don't want it. Which currently I don't.
If it does, then that would be saying they think they can sell about another two million consoles in the next two months or so.
Actually that's almost 3 months, and those are 'worldwide' figures. Considering they sold about 4 million units (worldwide) in under 2 months I find 'another 2 million in 3 months' a pretty conservative estimate.
It still is relvent until may, then Nintendo probably will have outsold the xbox 360...
Though you are probably right in relation to world wide sales. Nintendo is already the Market leader in Japan (over the 360, and PS3) which I feel will continue on an overall basis for the life of the systems (unless Nintendo has MASSIVE manufacturing issues).
Developers and Consumers tend towards the most popular system because it has the largest userbase and the most development for it. In many ways both the Playstation and PS2 were eclipsed by more powerful systems and remained the market leaders because the large userbase attracted third party devlopers who developed games which attracted a large userbase. If the Wii sells (consistently) at 2 or 4 times the rate of the PS3 for a year (or more) the sales of the PS3 will drop off and the sales of the Wii will accelerate.
Also factor in the Wii games are cheaper to develop than PS3, and 360 games.
Guitar Hero on Wii, plz. Because this is the exact type of game that people interested in the Wii would like.
I agree whole heartedly. I suspect this year the Wii will get Guitar Hero, DDR, and a Karaoke game since these have always appealed to the 'Non-gamer crowd' and graphics aren't even secondary, they're practically an afterthought.
Personally, I want to see Guitar Hero for the Wii support 2 Guitars, and 2 Wiimotes (or 1 nunchuck combo) to be used as Drum sticks.
Nope the game|life site specifically states that is a wired controller because there was too much latency in the wireless.
That's a cop out, and a load of crap. Latency is not an issue. It's more likely they feel MS is charging too much to use their proprietary wireless protocol, OR the MS certification process takes too long. The problem is likely something business related rather than tech related at this point.
I mean. As long as they're still microtransactions and not macrotransactions, Activision and I are good."
Ok, Personally, I'm hoping for $1 per song or $5 for 6 or 7 in a 'pack'. I would however pay $40 for the Whole First GH game available as downloadable content. GH simply had a better soundtrack IMHO, but GHII VASTLY improved multiplayer. If you can sell me both for my 360 then I no longer need a PS2.
FURTHER, Blu-Ray as I'm quite certain you well know is spec'd to handle up to 100GB.
If you are going with the 'In theory we got it to work in a lab' scenario where a bluray disk can hold 4 layers then you have to enter in a 4 layer HD-DVD at 60 Gigs. The truth is though at 4 layers of data, there isn't room for ample protection of the disk and they become very easy to damage. Until they come up with a better protective layer, you will see both top out at 2 layers.
Truth be told, you don't need even 50 gigs, unless you are content to use out-of-date codecs that waste space (like MPEG2) then the more space the better.
That's very true and I'm not ignorant of that fact; however, there are a number of games, particularly in the SNES and N64 lineup, that I'm sure people are aching to purchase --
You know they have to space out the goods. Considering they stated 1-4 downloads every week (despite Christmas having 5, I won't fault them for that:-> ) for around 10 VC games a month think about what that means. It may not seem like alot now, but 10 games a month = 120 games a year for a console with a 4-6 year life span (until we get WII or Wii mark 2) that is a HUGE amount of games.
Wii will continue to see more games that utilize the Wiimote sideways (NES, Genesis, Turbo-16) since the user doesn't have to buy additional hardware, the files are small, and the back catalog is greater. I expect something like 1 N64 game per month, 2 or 3 SNES, and the rest for the NES, Genesis, Turbo-16.
Most the noise comes from the DVD drive, not the internal fans. Compare the noise levels when playing something disk based, like PGR3 to one of the Live Arcade games such as Geometry Wars.
Is that true? I have noticed a big difference in sound, between the 2, but is it strictly the DVD drive? or do these DVD based games require more of the system, thus it has to crank the fans also to keep it cool?
Considering having folks download old games is probably costing Nintendo next to nothing, it wouldn't have been any worse for them than Xbox's system. On top of that, they could have sold "Achievement Point" cards at retail stores that came with 5000 pts.
In that example you are very literally buying a high score, which is a bad idea and defeats the purpose of Achievements. I also don't like the idea of "Selling my high score" for a game. A better idea is to tie specific achievements, to specific downloads. Gears of War unlocking Gamer Pics is a start. A good system would have achievements allow for a free download of one of MS's LiveArcade games (A title MS owns, not any of them). This lets the customer decide if they would rather earn it through progress, or just buy it if the task is too difficult.
The Humor is the key. It would be sweet if they took Akroid's script he was shopping around for Ghostbusters 3 and made that the basis of the game.
You smell something?
You know... I can't help but Agree that this would be hella fun on the Wii. Infact I have a Wii60 that is hooked to an HDTV (Component cables on both), and if it were multiplatform I would pick the Wii version if it 'put me in the suit' and used the WiiMote as the Proton pack...

$4 a share. W00T!
