Blew-Ray and HD-DVD (as pointless as they both are) are both Backwords compatible with regular DVDs. So you really don't have to re-buy all your old movies if you don't want to.
I just cannot agree that EA was that important of a factor with the Dreamcast failure.
Despite, it not being the only factor it was an important one. EA is THE largest independant software publisher out there. They chose not to develop for the dreamcast, NOT because they LOVED the PS2, but because Sega burned them with the Saturn. When the largest 3rd party developer announces they will not develop any titles for your platform what does that say to other developers?
The Dreamcast had some great games, but with each generation the system with the most games (IE: variety) wins out. People buy the hardware, to use the software. Not the other way around.
I understand that, however due to the relatively close timing of the 2 product launches (GBA Wireless in Early 2004, the DS in Late 2004) in just seems like a missed opportunity for Nintendo to make them compatible.
I especially liked PacMan Vs. It really is a great pick up and play party game for non-gamers.
It was less of a pain since there was only 1 wire required, and the rest were wavebirds getting passed around. I can't imagine how much of a mess that would be with 4 cabled controllers. Even though they do offer backwords cabled support with the GameCube docking station, I would love it if they had a wireless mod built into the Wii. Wireless just keeps it cleaner.
What I would love to know is why can't the 'DS Download play' pull down single cart multiplayer from a GBA game if it supports the Wireless adapter? We tried it with the Dr. Mario NES release, but no luck.:(
I am taking established facts and making reasonable connections. All I'm saying is that even if Nintendo doesn't make ANY software that pushes beyond 480p in terms of Graphics, another vender (such as Sega, or Techmo) can.
Xbox and PS2 supported 720p (and even 1080i)
Fixed. Yes, the X-box 1, and PS2 both can output in 1080i. Though The X-box has more titles that do, they both have AT LEAST 1 that supports 16:9, 480p, 720p, and 1080i (and for the PS2 only 1 1080i title) and online titles which we have as proof that it can be done on each system.
You could have made the same argument for the GC.
Fixed. Just because it (720p, or 1080i) hasn't been done on GameCube doesn't mean it can't be done. Unless you are suggesting that both the Gamecube and the Wii are/will be be less powerful than the PS2.
The hardware is capable of doing more than 480p, but there is little reason to since it's pretty much end of life and they haven't been producing Progressive Scan capable Gamecubes since 2004.
"The majority of people won't be playing our system with an HDTV, though with the Revolution, 480p resolution will be standard." ---Shigeru Miyamoto.
"The Standard" for the X-box 360 is 720p, yet some already have 1080i games...
Just joking. If you are a foreigner in Japan, and buying X-box because it a) suits your needs, and b) is cheap I can very much understand it. (The X-Box, has been the same price as the PS2 for most of it's life, and a much better value.)
Maybe you can shed some light on how they're dropping the ball in Japan. Are they not making games that fit the Japanese tastes? Did they botch their marketing? or what? A number of Slashdot users assume it's 'Nationalism' and they don't buy X-box simply because it's American. I don't buy that for a second.
Let's take this down to the Bare essentials. (I'll even take the X-box out for emphasise, and just focus on the 2 current "weaker" systems.)
The PS2 is technically weaker (slower processor, less ram, etc.) than the GameCube = Fact.
The Wii will be more powerful than the GameCube (and thus the PS2) = Fact.
The PS2 can support a game (GT4) running at 1080i ( HD Resolution ) = Fact.
Give me a reason why the Wii with a faster Processor, GPU, more Ram, and component output can not at least match the video output of the weakest current selling system.
It's simply Logical. The 'upto 480p' was taken from Nintendo commenting their nextgen standard will remain 480p.
Note: To get Progressive scan you need the proper cables to send the signal. Either Component, DVI, or HDMI. So you can guarentee if Nintendo themselves will do games in 480p then they must produce a cable to support it (and hopefully Monster Cable as well).
The Wii will not be as powerful as the X-Box 360, or the PS3, but it will be more powerful than anything in this generation (most powerful being the original X-Box) so it Stands to reason it CAN do anything (Graphically) that can be done by a machine this generation.
This Gen Starting with the Weakest Machine the Sega Dreamcast -
There are a TON of games (per capita) that support 480p and 16:9 widescreen.
The PS2 is the 2nd to weakest system of this generation. - It Supports 480p games, 16:9 widescreen, and GT4 sits alone as the only game capable of at 1080i, but it can do it.
The GameCube is more powerful than the PS2 - and supports 480p and 16:9 widescreen. Widescreen isn't as common, but almost every Nintendo published game (and a number of 3rd party games) support(s) 480p even if it isn't listed on the box. (if it doesn't autodetect the cables hold 'B' as the game loads.)
The Wii is more powerful than the X-Box 1 - Which supports "480p, 720p, and 1080i along with widescreen."
There is no reason to 'assume' that the Wii will be deliberately cut down to not support the higher resolutions if all the hardware is in place. SEGA or Techmo can easily support it if they wish to. (Even if Nintendo themselves don't)
Any Word on Component Cables? Madden Wii was confirmed to have 16:9 widescreen and 480 progressive scan output.
Note: Yes, the Wii CAN do HD 720p or 1080i if it wants to. It'll be more powerful than the first X-box which can do this as well. Nintendo is just sticking to 480p as THEIR standard like they did with the gamecube (Hell the GameBoy Player supports 480p).
I'm only in chapter 4, and to be perfectly honest I don't think I'll make it to Chapter 5. That jerking motion in and out of game by loading is more frustrating than anything.
As far as the 'intelligent loading' of Metroid Prime, I use that as a great example myself. The Elevators were great because they 'kept you in the game' even for extended loads. Same thing with Zelda Wind Waker. If you stepped out of a Building the Sun White washed the screen for a second then 'your eyes focused' and you were there. This more than any other reason is why my X-box and GameCube get far more use than my PS2.
No matter how they pull it off (obviously it's easier with a higher read speed, and more cache), one of the MAJOR FEATURES I'm looking for next gen is the elimination of load screens.
I don't want to see any load screens. I could care less if they are 1080p. I would sooner play a game in 720p, or 480p that doesn't keep interupting me to load the next portion of a level. This jerking effect simply breaks the immersion, and reminds me that I'm playing a game.
Ok,
E-Distribution may help for smaller games, but I fail to see the logic of having a 25-50 gig blu-ray capacity, and a 25-60 gig hard drive. They do run contradictory to eachother.
Hopefully E-Distribution will help kill the greatest issue I have with Current gaming; Load screens. Maybe Gamers will finally wake up, and get used to the idea of a game not 'jerking you out of the game' to load the next portion of a level. That's why I own every current system, and play the Playstation 2 the least, and ironically the GameCube the most.
Hell I just stopped playing Half Life 2 for X-box because of the frustrating frequency of the game stopping to load. The world is pretty, and the positional sound is a great touch (sounds killer on my sound system), and very useful in game, but when the same chapter has 37 different points where it stops all progress just to load, the next 'part of the level' then I'm done.
I am less interesting in Sony's Cell technology or the Capacity of Blu-Ray disks than I am to the Read spead of the Blu-Ray drive.
If "NextGen" still has load screens then it fails.
Blew-Ray and HD-DVD (as pointless as they both are) are both Backwords compatible with regular DVDs. So you really don't have to re-buy all your old movies if you don't want to.
IBM's making the PS3, the X-Box 360 and the Wii. 'No matter who loses, IBM wins.'

Better?
Actually it was my dog, and he's wondering why you don't stop by anymore.
I think requiring a user to be online just to get their user-profile
Where does it state that?
From TFA: The Wii-mote features 6KB of "non-volatile" memory, whose exact purpose remains a mystery. --- IGN
So why you are implying they are forcing you to go online?

If you sell fewer than 10 systems across the country for a week they should post the people's names that bought them too.
Double Dribble for NES was made by Konami.

Sega Screwed EA during the Saturn Days. That's why the Dreamcast didn't get their support.
