You should be scared- you can have all your thousands of dollars of computer equipment and hard drives seized indefinitely just because you clicked on a link. I'm wayyyyyyyyy more terrified of the FBI than of terrorists, and I'm no criminal.
Scientists are well-paid, haughty workaholics who can't tolerate idiots.. can you blame the public for being jealous of them and annoyed at their elitism? Well I can becaue of everything science has given us, but it's at least understandable that anti-intellectualism is a strong force.
Science doesn't need to do anything. It's already so pervasive.. yeah people are skeptical about newer theories like our latest physics models (string theory) and a lot of people have various problems with evolution (that random mutation couldn't effect postitive change, that it's too darn unlikely and there must be a better theory)... but the scientific way of thinking is a permanent part of the modern mind. Science already has a vice grip on humanity, it's not like we're moving into an era dominated by superstition.
You're obviously giving them root access. Don't. And while you're at it, give them thin clients and make them connect to a central server, you never have to leave your office.
Sounds obvious. Is anyone surprised that machines can do things better, longer, and more reliably than a human body? And how exactly does a machine "perceive"?
by Google's definition, Apple is irredeemably evil, behaving more like an old-fashioned industrial titan than a different-thinking business of the future. Apple operates with a level of secrecy that makes Thomas Pynchon look like Paris Hilton. It locks consumers into a proprietary ecosystem.... But by deliberately flouting the Google mantra, Apple has thrived.
Only because consumers are stupid. I completely agree- Apple is irredeemably evil, more obsessed with proprietary secrets than even Microsoft. And I would never put a single dollar in Apple's pocket.
Oh I see the problem.. now that GCC isn't turning out broken binaries, old kernels will be unable to run them. Everyone will be forced to upgrade, or more likely everyone will still make broken binaries.
Of course nobody on slashdot needs any antivirus at all. We generally stay well-patched and aren't idiotic enough to run untrusted code.. thus your machine is impervious to viruses. Doesn't protect you from hacking attempts, but that's nothing that AV would fix anyway.
You hardly need some advanced chemical warfare; the thing is 12 feet across, you can just armor plate it and use the godzilla strategy.. just fly around the city ramming things and thowing people around like Nazgul in the LOTR movies. They won't be able to shoot it down because it's large and radioactive.
Wow, is it really that bad? A few years ago when I was younger, if I had a fever or bad stomach ache, my mom could drive me to the family doctor's office and see a doctor within 15 minutes. If I needed a prescription medicine, the doctor wrote it on the spot, and we could take that little slip of paper to any pharmacy in the area to get the medicine within an hour. I think you can even call the pharmacy and tell them to fill the prescription, and they'd have it done by the time you get there, and they just check the prescription before they give anything to you.. and health insurance usually covers most of the cost of the doctor's visit and medicine. I worked as a cashier in a supermarket/pharmacy and saw dozens of little pharmacy baggies where the copay was $15 and the insurance company was paying hundreds or thousands of dollars. Of course that money has to come from somewhere- I bet health insurance is horrifyingly expensive.
The reason bureaucrats hate space programs is because it's the one guaranteed area where you can dump as many billions as you want and you will get no measurable progress. All this probery doesn't count- yes it's scientifically invaluable, but it's just enough to keep American voters happy that their tax money is hiring very smart people to make progress in space. No matter how many soil samples we take, launching probes will never get us to Mars, or back to the moon.. and that's just the way it's going to stay because an elected official would have to bring an economy to its knees to do it, and they're not going to stay elected for long.
Think about it. PCs you can play games with graphics as good as they get the day you buy your card. Consoles you can play games with graphics as good as they get the day you buy your console. Point is, if you buy a new graphics card 3 years into a console's lifecycle, you're going to be able to play games with "3 years better" graphics than the games on that console.

How is this criminal? This is like a perfect example of a civil offense.

How is the graphical interface better than a text editor?
A database of objects with nothing more than xarc, yarc, distance, color, brightness? Sounds a lot smaller than actual image data.
Sounds obvious. Is anyone surprised that machines can do things better, longer, and more reliably than a human body? And how exactly does a machine "perceive"?
That is what we need. What we don't need is a semi-legitimate government-sponsored group operating way out of their legal jurisdiction.
Dropping bits of Halley's Comet on Antartica might just do the trick.
All ISPs take you to the same internet, so why pay more than you have to! :)
But hordes of furious consumers rallying the entire internet against all DRM is a significant factor to consider.
But come on, this is so cool, suddenoutbreakofcommonsense, etc etc. Is it just me or is canada suddenly awesome? Eh?
It will take 1 mistake to ruin that one computer he's working with, but Google can well afford to just buy another if it keeps its engineers happy.

OK so the kernel developers add a single line of code, the bugzilla ticket is closed, and we get on to real news?

Yeah it makes Apple more money, but it's not better for the consumer. So why does the consumer continue to support Apple's garbage products?
