The bias is ridiculous and, because this site is associated with Linux and the open source community, it damages the credibility of Linux and open source in the process.

Seriously? That's a bit dramatic considering these days, Slashdot is the rag mag of tech/IT. What you're saying may have been true 15 years ago, but that ship has sailed. While I agree about the bias (MS takes it equally on the chin, if not more), I seriously question the influence the Slashdot "community" actually has. It's a mess. Just consider the prevalence of goatse... seriously? That went on for years and it doesn't exactly command credibility -- never mind the GNAA.

Yes, we all long for the days of analog TV where you put the top knob on the U and then spin the bottom knob endlessly to get to channel 60 for reruns of the Andy Griffith Show.

If you were lucky, you had a little brother for a remote control. Good times.

At my company, passwords are assigned by IT. They match up to your user name - all eight characters... +4 letters up, -4 letters down, +8 letters up, etc etc with a number thrown in somewhere.

Don't think that user selected forced password change policies are the worst. I can literally log in as anybody in the company.

Take down drones that endanger firefighting and prison operations, sure. The problems start when undefined weasel-words like "authorized protection of a person" are used and rights of citizens are curtailed or eliminated. Clandestine hearings and elimination of FOIA for the program do not help matters. You just don't need all that secrecy to take down a drone over a fire or prison.

the more likely it is that they'll get their stupid asses thrown to the curb in the next election cycle.

Keep telling yourself that. The constituency is largely lazy, self-centered, and couldn't be bothered to vote. Many simply refuse to see the world beyond their own Big Mac. Most of what remains that fall into these categories seem to be extremely malleable and impressionable and will believe anything they're told when it comes from a person who aligns with their limited worldview. Then there is the small fraction of people who understand the issues, can articulate the problem, form solutions, and execute to achieve results. Sadly, these people seem to exist in relatively small numbers and don't seem to be making much of a difference. By and large, they are being out-bred by mouth-breathers at an alarming pace.

With a 55% voter turnout in the 2016 presidential race, it's no wonder we are where we are.

I'm 41 and I do not see any of this mess being fixed in my lifetime. Good luck to the next generations. You're going to need it. The Age of the Dominant Ego has arrived.
