  1. Re:You're defined by your subculture... on Personality Secrets in Your MP3 Player · · Score: 1

I always love when music conversations end like this:
A: Oh you like Band X... I do too. Do you listen to Band Y
B: I liked them before they sold out.
A: I don't think they sold out... they just signed on to a major record label. their music is still good.
    B: [Rolls Eyes]

Music elitists who try to out-indie or out-underground a person who is trying to find musical common ground just grate my nerves.... especially when I find myself doing it 0_o

Nonetheless, I challenge you not to lose all respect for a person that lists Nickleback as their favorite band and thinks Kelly Clarkson is the best thing since Captain and Tennille.

  2. Re:Myers-Briggs Jung on Personality Secrets in Your MP3 Player · · Score: 2, Insightful

I would tend to agree. Personality profiles based on the Big 5 personality traits (MBTI only has 4, but I think isn't far from the type of personality assessment described in this study) is like taking a piece of a person's attitude at a given time and applying it roughshod to the person's entire life.
Usually such measurements require heavy self-assessment and a mindful subject can make themselves seem however they want (even with "lie detector" questions).
I'm curious to read the study, but I put little stock in Personology...erm... personality psychology.

  3. Re:cheers! local vs national identity maybe? on More States Challenging National Driver's Licenses · · Score: 2, Interesting

The EU would nearly be a perfect parallel, only the EU at a much later time (Their previous history of nationhood is significantly more rooted than the "sovereignty" of the individual United States). States, especially in the south, have fought tooth and nail against the decay of their "once-sovereign" rights. Of course it has been most visible in the case of the "peculiar institution" of slavery and later Jim Crow laws in the South. However, the issue proliferates the US as a reflection of a very fundamental liberty-centric debate (ie power further from the individual allows fewer individual liberties). This libertarian streak (I understand) is characteristic to American Democracy more so than European Democracy. States (and by extension their citizens), until the civil war, had been significantly more autonomous, though without quite the degree of national identity of the European states. Still, until the middle of the 20th century most folks in the South would claim their state-citizenship ahead of their national citizenship. I think you would find this trend persists, particularly in powerful states (California, and most notably Texas). It is really an interesting phenomena when one's geographic identity and national identity are at odds. I am Texan, if I was abroad I would say "I am Texan" rather than "...American". I think a fair portion of Texans would do likewise. Still my national identity remains decidedly American. I too am curious about how folks from other federal systems see this working out.

    Super Star Trek anyone?
God I loved that game from the moment I checked out the floppy from the local library...

They tested other kinds of games too.
Here's the abstract It's kinda saying. Folks feel good when they play video games, rather, when they feel good, while a player's needs are met while they play a game, they are likely to enjoy it more, and play more. MMO games seem to fulfill more needs and that is why they are so addictive.

  6. Re:Not paying on New iPod Owner Onslaught Overwhelms iTunes · · Score: 1

I meant the kind of cover art you can hold and flip through. (of course there are clear advantages of having a .pdf of liner notes, if you are inclined to copy+paste them to the notes of a given song) Also referring to cool album things like stickers, posters, or other things as with the Pick of Destiny (Tenacious D) album a pick_of_destiny__? Of course not to many artists/publishers do stuff like this, but damned if I'm not happy when they do.

  7. Not paying on New iPod Owner Onslaught Overwhelms iTunes · · Score: 1

I love iTunes and my iPod. The iTunes Music Store... not so much. I just am surprised that so many pay good money for lossy, DRM-crippled music files. I know its about having the music on demand, but for crissakes, if you need that much music NOW you may want to take a look at general level of patience. My brother got an iPod and a card for the iTunes store. He got some music, but then had problems when the site went down. I think there is more worry about the fact that syncing libraries will only go one way (unless the music is bought through iTMS and you have access to your account), but I'm still not convinced that $.99 songs are worth it for lossy files, DRM, no cover art, etc. Just me?

  8. Re:Still Not Six Sigma on How They Make LEGO Bricks · · Score: 1

Point well taken. Of course there is a balance. Knowing where things go wrong and/or how is irrelevant if all the time/resources that should be spent on building better processes/products is instead spent measuring them. A rational manager may say the former, but a GOOD manager would never say the former to the exclusion of the latter.

  9. Re:Still Not Six Sigma on How They Make LEGO Bricks · · Score: 2, Interesting

you sound exactly like my brother (who used to work for GE, hated it, and would find particular interest in this story) ;) I think there are a number of other process management systems that mirror the inefficiencies of six sigma by overemphasizing the measurement of the process and under-emphasizing the process itself. The system needn't be a product-oriented procedure. These systems make management feel as though they have a purpose. Management should ask themselves "is it more important to know exactly how wrong we are or is it more important not to be wrong." You could measure a production method or business process to any particular degree of accuracy (or make it as inaccurate as you deem necessary to fit your model) but at some point the optimization of a process creates more inefficiency than an unoptimized process.
