1) This is the same tiger (Tatiana) that attacked and seriously injured a zookeeper (Lori Komejan) who was only doing her job just one year ago. The zoo initially blamed the attack on the zoo keeper.
And in this case the zoo is right. It is the zookeepers job, so he has to know the involved dangers. I once talked with a person in a zoo responsible for the big cats. Every one of the zookeepers, which are responsible for feeding and tending the big cats know that they are hated by the cats. Has something to do with hierarchy. They feed the cats, they tell them when to leave the cage and when to enter it, so the zookeepers are the alpha males. The cats don't want to accept this without a proper fight, but are not allowed to fight. The zookeeper told me that a normal person entering the cage would be in severe danger, but on a lucky day when the cats are well fed, might be ignored. Should he enter the cage, the cats would attack him immediately and tear him to threads.
Well, we know babies stick fingers into power sockets. And if a baby is in your home, it's probably your issue. So you would have the choice--protect your kid from your power sockets, or join the Darwin Awards.
In that case you take precautions against a very concrete risk. You probably also remove plastic bags from your babies reach. Do you remove light bulbs, too? Baby could grab a pillow or a toy, throw it at a lamp at the ceiling far beyond its reach, the light bulb breaks, baby plays with the shards, cuts himself and bleeds to death. Unlikely? Of course. As much unlikely as what happened at the zoo. As another poster said, the enclosure was build 1930. So almost 80 years no problem. Many zoos have similar enclosures with no problem. You simply can't make everything perfectly safe, and, this is my opinion where many might disagree, you should not even try.
Modern cats are the ones who have survived decades of man's aggressive hunting and removal of habitat, so you should expect they are the fittest. All the lazy, zoo-apt cats are long gone.
Yes, I know, you are only fishing for 'funny', but I must still answer. Tigers in zoos are the equivalent of couch potatoes. Compared to the wild living variety untrained and weak. Weak of course only for a tiger.
Even now I think the enclosure was absolutely sufficient. I am not a friend of nanny state attitudes. An enclosure where by an asshole aggravated tiger can escape from is unacceptable? Forbid cars, power sockets or even knifes. Improperly used they can kill. And actually do. Much more often then taunted tigers in zoos world wide.
Typical nanny state attitude. Make everything super safe, regardless how it is used. Please remove all power sockets from your home. Some idiot might stick its tongue into it.
I once had a guided-tour through a German zoo. When we came to the tigers the guide told us that the tigers in theory were able to leap over the barriers. According to the guide many animals in that zoo were able to escape when they really wanted. However, animals are similar to most people in some aspects. Life is good in the zoo and within the known areas. What is outside is unknown, perhaps scary, so why bother? Looks like the taunting was enough reason to bother for that tiger.
Also, isn't it about time for the people who grew up watching Sesame Street to be assuming rolls of power in our society?
Yes.
I mean, who grows up and decides that all those happy memories aren't appropriate for today's youth?
Those who assume power and notice that they incompetent to something positive with it. It is easy to criticise, but hard to be creative. It is easier to destroy than to build something. Easier to restrict and forbid than to find ways to actually improve something. So what do you do when suddenly you got power, but don't know how to use it? Do something populistic. No idea how to lower crime? No problem, just raise punishments. You need your name in the media? Forbid something popular, but don't hurt your voters. Forbidding something for kids is always fine. When they are old enough to vote, it does not matter anymore for you.
Firstly, this is how a democracy works: A single vote is unlikely to make a difference, but the total of all the single votes does make a difference.
Votes are for the existing democracies what Brownian motion for movement is.
Secondly, in many countries around the world, people a fighting, being tortured and dying to secure the right to vote for their fellow countrymen. We who already have that right should not treat it nonchalantly.
This means nothing. They simply don't know it better. Young people are usually very enthusiastic when it comes to voting and democracy. And usually this enthusiasm wanes when they get older and more experienced. I wonder what the reason could be.
Thirdly, some people seem to think that being callous and cynical about the way one's country is run is a mark of maturity and insight. Not so! In my humble opinion it is highly immature. It is so much easier to be cynical than making an active effort.
This is one way to see it. Another could be to ponder which of the different medical terms for people doing repetitive and useless actions could be applied.
Great. Can I freely use your text? Saves quite some work in many discussions since it can be fitted for almost anything. Just replace 'gambling' with smoking, extreme sports, excessive TV usage, fat food, chewing gum or with whatever you disagree with.
They not only use words, but they also misuse the legal system and lobbying. Especially with the last they influence legislation. They fight actively against well-established civil rights wherever these stand in the way of their profits. When there are laws, which hinder their aganda and which they were not able to corrupt or remove yet, they don't flinch from breaking them.
When I wrote that who buys CDs or DVDs supports terrorists I did not mean it in the figurative sense, I meant it literally.
The problem I forsee if there is the thought that only women are playing female characters is that anyone with a female character will be harrassed.
And this is good so. If man are not allowed to play female characters, but woman are allowed male characters, it is sexual discrimination. The way around this should be for any man to make it as unpleasant as possible for women to play in this game.
I have a good friend at work who sometimes repeats to me the horrible conversations that occur between the males at work.....
I really seem to have missed something.Either I worked in the wrong companies, up to now I worked in six different ones, or this is something country-specific (I live in Germany), or your friend lies, but I never experienced something like that. Too bad.
males are more likely to take risks and indulge competition.
And this is the only reason males have on average the better jobs: They are more likely to take risks. When woman whine that they are oh so discriminated they manage it perfectly to blend out all the males who took a risk, failed and landed in the gutter. A place where predominantly men are found.
I work for a fortune 100 company as a software engineer and I face this discrimination all the time. I frequently get this vibe from my male co-workers that they don't take what I say seriously. And then when I do great work, they all try to get their hand in the pot and take credit for things I did, which frustrates me to no end. A male co-worker actually got a promotion which seemed to me (from the little congratulations email went out describing all his wonderful accomplishments), mostly based on MY work. And did I get a promotion? Nope.
Yada yada, I am male and something like this happened to me, too. So what? Do the same I did: Resign and look for a job where your work is valued. Must be nice to be female. Having an excuse for all problems and failures.
Even if that's not true, you might not want to run around telling the world that these jackasses didn't think you made the grade.
They are no issue for me anymore. Found shortly after that something better. So without this article I would not have wasted a thought on Draeger. Still it is funny when I think how they lectured me about safety and responsibility and medical yada yada.:-)
Designed in 1930? This means almost 80 years no problems. I know from another zoo that they are well aware that the tigers could jump over the barriers, they just don't do it: http://science.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=438748&cid=22261598

Yeah, forbid cars. They are inherently dangerous. Constantly people a dieing in car accidents. Even innocent elderly women.

No, they did not. They compared the paperwork involved.
Rather useless to answer to a more or less statistical statement with an equivalent of 'But I....'.

Saying "Ripping CDs is Stealing" is child molesting. So would you let you tell something from a child molester?

So, men are assholes towards women? Wonder what the responses were when someone claimed women are assholes towards men.
A hoax, or a test balloon?
