for what reason do you conisder it to be? count the number of clueless and irrelevant answer to the original post and look at the ratio to ones that aren't - doesn't look like a resource you'd want to use.
You say this knowing what the responses are. 20/20 hindsight and all. But even a few good responses may be worth the relatively little effort of posting the question to/. Free feedback, and all the questioner has to do is sort out the good from the useless (like our conversation).
I still can't understand how whining like yours gets modded up as an "insightful" answer to a question... Why are you responding with a non-answer? Just like to hear/see yourself whine and bitch? You must be a hoot at parties...

Seems like you're the only one around here crufty enough to think it isn't. Most people have been giving lucid, well-thought out responses. Then there's the "I don't like this question, so I'll bitch" troll. Come on, whine a little more about ask slashdot! You can do it!
I believe that the RIAA was claiming to act on behalf of the singer Usher (whom they mistakingly believe is the copyright holder). They were wrong about the file being under that copyright.
I do not believe the RIAA was claiming to act on behalf of the professor.
He's not saying the takedown didn't violate the DMCA, he's saying they haven't prosecuted yet. OF course, that might have something to do with the RIAA and their lapdogs Bush and Berman keeping the DOJ on a leash.
Obligatory Bush bashing eh?
They haven't prosecuted because there was no criminal claim made, AND the fact that this was a civil matter (which he mentioned a number of times wrt other cases). They don't just run around prosecuting folks ya know.
NIC's don't deal with IP, they work with ethernet (yes, it's a protocol) at the MAC address level, so they will be fine. As will your hub's and switches at home.
Routers are where the problems will be. But the OS on most routers is upgradable, so I believe this should be doable for the most part. Some older routers may have issues. YMMV.
Requiring a specific operating system, or platform, is not delusion. Have you ignored what I said about the client possibly having already invested time and money into an existing system? Already having an inhouse IT department using said systems? If you walk in and tell them you're going to use hardware they don't own, software none of their people are familiar with, and you'll be the only one who knows anything about it after it's done, then you're going to have a hard time making any money at all.
Besides, rarely is there something that can be done on platform 'A' that cannnot be done on platform 'B'.

Aren't those the same list of things that if done by Microsoft would have you screaming bloody murder though?
Seriously, this is what I've always hated about both companies. They *need* control over their platform. Apple has a draconian rule over their hardware, and is pushing for more of the same in software. Microsoft will simply crush opposition in software, but is pretty reasonable about hardware (drivers are another issue).
And when the people you're collaborating with are a client 300 miles and one state away? Do you know how costly "face-time" can be then?
Yes, the "right-way", according to you here, can involve a 3-hr car ride at the expense of said client to discuss a single document (for what can be *hours* with the right type/amount of people collaborating) and a 3-hr drive back.
When non-face-time collaboration (phone, email, etc) can work, why spend the time and money on face-time?
Especially considering you're *only* 5 hours ahead of the US EST.
Slashdot is always showing things a little later. They don't *post news*, the post links to *other peoples* news. Been like this forever. Deal with it.

I missed the part of the article that said you needed to buy the new chip. Perhaps you could point it out to me?
OT, but what did you use to create highlighted MAPS with GPS information? I've got a magellan unit I picked up a while back and haven't found very much Linux software to do such a thing...
If I were an ump I would try to think about where you will be working in the next few years. If these things take off then there will be little if any need for them.
There is a little more to being an umpire than calling strikes you know. In fact, there is more than one umpire.
Umn.. I take it you didn't see the interview where Clinton things this amendment should be changed to 'no president shall server more than two *consecutive* years'?
Ahh, the good old teenage "Well, I've never used it, and don't know where it's used, so it *must* be obsolete!" attitude. You use 'PASCAL'? How ten years ago!
What's wrong with PASCAL? I'd rather learn on PASCAL than VB anyday. PASCAL looks more like C++ and Java (and C#) than VB does. Learning VB from any other 'decent' language is a snap. But learning C++ or Java from VB is a pain in the ass.
Students should be learning with a command line. No GUI apps to start. Learn from the ground up. Otherwise you'll be able to do things, but not necessarily understand them.
My *point*, though missed here apparently, is that/. is US based and US run. Expect things to be a *little* US centric! Slashdot has always stated this as policy.
Wow, we catch hell if we expect other countries to do things 'our way'. Good to know the rest of the world can be just as self-centered.
Why stop there? I think the slashdot crew should all become multi-lingual! Why *shouldn't* they go far out of their way to speak the native language of everybody who wants to read their site or chat with them?
I mean, if it's not too much to ask that they stay up for 24 hours for each timezone to talk to them, then they should certainly be catering to all our needs!

Personally, I'd like to see header files go the way of the dodo. Usless, annoying, and repetitive. Why do I need to define my functions twice?

The problem is not with GUI-based languages; it's with tools that hide their inner workings from you. VB is like that but so is VC and MFC.
I agree completely. MFC doesn't hide quite as much as VB, but I never liked "coding" with a "wizard". At least not when learning.

Yes, you can steal BSD. It's not in the public domain - it's under a liberal license, but one that still requires attribution of use.
