  1. SciFi Realities Become Reality? on Software To Authenticate Paintings · · Score: 1

We saw this type of technology in the movie "Equilibrium." The next thing I want is some type of technology that we should have seen already that would allow us to transport ourselves into paintings, or sidewalk chalk drawings.

  2. Wireless is NOT better! on Ultra Wideband Hub Coming in October · · Score: 2, Insightful

I understand the desire for less clutter as I am an audio technician, producer, vj, and dj. I have wires going EVERYWHERE in my studio. It is frustrating at times, but I am used to it. What is the big deal here? When I need USB connectivity to go 10m, I run extenders along the carpet. You ultimately are not going to get rid of all the wires; i.e. monitor cable, power cables, etc. Ugh, what we will buy into for convience that is inferior in quality.

  3. Bigger & Bigger, Smaller & Smaller on 16GB Flash USB Dongle · · Score: 3, Insightful

When will they learn that this is not what we want. We want things that work, and work for a long time. I am sick of buying things that break after a few years. My grandmother has a vacumn cleaner that has worked for over 20 years. I honestly have yet to find a vacumn cleaner these days that work beyond a few years. I don't care about bigger and better, I care about smarter and tougher. Unless documents become over 5 megabytes a file, I will not spend my money on this. I will spend that same money and a few extra bucks to get a LaCie external hard drive.

  4. Speed vs. Bandwidth on Upgrading Wi-Fi — What, When, and Why · · Score: 2, Interesting

Does it really matter how much bandwidth one needs in terms of consumers? I would rather see improvments be made on how far the signal goes rather than how much it can handle. It never really mattered to me whether I had a B or G router as I only had a few computers using the internet at once. Granted, once FIOS is more widely used in the States the amount of bandwidth will have more of an effect.

  6. Unfortunate, but it is the way the cookie crumbles on EA's 'Invasion of Privacy' Policy · · Score: 1

Unfortunately this is the way of the world. The only way to receive discounts without paying for some sort of membership these days is agree to loose some of your privacy. Look at the company that offers the most popular FREE products in the world: GOOGLE. Don't get me wrong, I love their products to death; however everything I search is stored somewhere to bring me a more "personalized" product. It is like the Safeway "TOS" above, they are not going to give out your information or purchase data, however they will use the data they record to give you a more personalized experience. With the above being said, is it really a bad thing? You receive more free products and/or discounts for products you usually use/buy. I agree that it is a trade off; but after four years of military service I have no privacy so I really don't care.

  7. Re:Having Lived In Korea on Korea's Online Aggression a Taste of the Future? · · Score: 1

I don't know if you are referring to the early morning or morning crowd. When I would ride the subway anywhere north of Suwon into the greater Seoul area (from Illsan to Nuwon, etc.) I would see most of the younger generation texting, playing games, or when I left starting to watch TV on their mobile phones. I began to see PSP's float around but that was mostly the Westerners that I would see every once in a while. The older generation were always the one's sleeping/sitting/etc. Korea is the most internet (and game) addicted country in the world. Just look at the people that spend hours of their free time in the PC Bangs. I guess you have a regular plan for your phone and not prepaid. When I was there it was 3 cents (equiv.) per text message and around 10 cents (equiv.) for picture messages; then again that was pre-paid. I just returned to the States last September.

  8. Re:pricing on Boeing Scraps In-flight Internet Access · · Score: 1

The pricing is pretty normal for internet access that you have to pay for nowadays. I think that a dedicated WiFi connection in a plane is much more feasible than "Wireless Internet." Even during my stay in Korea; streaming TV @ 30fps over a wireless mobile phone carrier still had a lot of bugs. Ever since 2002 when I was working for AT&T Wireless they were telling us how fast their 3G service was to be; what a load of crap that was. Until all cellular service can blanket the world with the same degree of service, I will stay with using WiFi that's hardwired (or in the case of a plane, through a Sattelite connection).

  9. Pure Sillyness on Our Moon Could Become a Planet · · Score: 1

I think that if they move to the new "easy" definition that they need to make it more specific. For example: "Those bodies affected by the Sun's gravitational pull in such a way they form a circular type orbit around it shall be called planets. Those bodies affected by an individual planet's gravitational pull shall be called moons." Their defintion is simply too generic.

  10. Having Lived In Korea on Korea's Online Aggression a Taste of the Future? · · Score: 2, Informative

I can say that internet usuage is bred into just about everyone over there. When on the subways/trains nearly everyone is either playing a game, texting, or e-mailing over their uber-phone. When they are not doing that they are taking pictures of themselves to send to their friends and/or use for some sort of web use. I love Korea and am planning upon returning soon, but I can understand why the medium is the internet over there for these type of situations. Heck, you could get 100mbs down and 20mbs up VDSL connection for approximately 35/month.

Agreed; big business runs the world. When a business's profit's are out of balance, they will do whatever they can to restore order. The only reason Asian airports arn't doing it is because their profit's haven't been threatened. During my stay in Korea last year I felt safer not only in public transportation but also private then I have during my childhood in the States.

I do agree that power is becoming quite an annoyance these days with the video cards. I would like to say that I believe that to move forward we need to take a step back. I am finding more and more games that are simply pleasing to the eye but lack the originality, functionality, and creativeness of older games. These video card makers focus too much on realism and tend to encourage game makers to focus on the like. Let's make cards that are functional, less power hungry, well-rounded (physics), and cooler.
