Agreed. For instance, ies4linux. I love the fact that I can run IE 5.5, 6, and 7 concurrently to test web apps and make sure they run right. This doesn't hurt Linux at all. It makes it more attractive to people that have to test with IE. My only other alternative is to run Windows in a VM, which requires purchasing a Windows license.

That's one thing that really bothers me about a lot of multi platform games: the PC port, when present, is often just an afterthought. Gears of War is a great example. Anything based on the Unreal Engine is a great example. They make it to work on consoles and PCs, but most of their customers' primary market is consoles. Over the ages that's shown more and more in the PC versions.

It's little things like how, in gears of war, one key does EVERYTHING. It lunges, it takes cover, it jumps over the cover you just took (better hope that's what you meant to do). You can re-assign that key, but not the individual actions. Why? Because consoles only have a few keys, and this was designed for consoles. That's not a practical feature for them. That's annoying, but it's only one of many, many trends I've seen in these cross platform games that don't leverage the advantages of the PC. Puffy looking hunch-backed models (to reduce polygon count, I can only assume), gimped or missing plugin/mod system, etc.

It sucks. PC games used to rock because you could do more with them. It's like Leggos vs. Duplos. Not anymore.

KDE4 is primarily an architecture revamp over 3.x. It's the cleaner codebase (both because it's based on Qt4 instead of 3 and internal restructuring) that allowed them to port it.

Porting KDE3 would be harder both architecturally and possibly legally (has Qt3 been released GPL? I know 4 was...).

Also, how many digital downloads were done to restore a lost or broken CD. I can't tell you how many times I have purchased the same "The Doors" CD only to have it stolen from my car or what not. After a while I gave up and downloaded it. After buying it like 10 times over (at least), I feel I am entitled to download it.

According to the DMCA you can't gain commercial benefit directly or indirectly if you don't want to be found guilty.

If you lost a CD by wear and tear, theft, any fairly common cause by which CDs disappear (and theft is common), you are indirectly commercially benefiting by not purchasing it again. Your download resulted in not having to repurchase the album, after all. As a matter of fact burning your purchased CD to a CDR to avoid wear and tear also violates this clause because you have the indirect commercial advantage of avoiding wear and tear. Anyone else think this is unfair?

The DMCA is full of this stuff. It should never have passed.

Absolutely true. And that's why the (R|MP)IAA should have gotten creative from the get go and figured out how to harness digital distribution rather than attempt to stifle it.

This is a losing battle: you just can't restrict this stuff. In stead you should be the first person to invest tons of capital in harnessing it.

They didn't do that, and while it may or may not be too late for them now they still aren't embracing this new trend. The openness is here. Bandwidth is increasing, CPU power (for cracking your encryption...) is increasing.

Rather than keeping your old business model afloat, adopt a new one and be the first (or the first with your amount of money) to do so. Your market is fading. Find the successor.

    And I have mod points...

People are drastically missing the point here. Nobody's punishing Microsoft because they're Microsoft, and nobody's saying you can't bundle a browser with an OS.

    The facts are these:
    1. You can't leverage a monopoly in another market.
    2. Web browsers and operating systems are separate markets.
    3. Microsoft has the monopoly on Operating Systems.
    4. Microsoft leverages their Windows monopoly to further their browser market share.

So nobody is saying Microsoft can't bundle a browser - they just have to provide options. Make it so you can choose your browser on install, make it so the OEM can choose a browser to bundle with default installs, whatever. Some sort of choice. You can bundle fifty browsers if you want. Just don't bundle your own and only your own.

As of now the problem isn't that Microsoft is bundling a browser, it's that they're bundling only their browser and offering no options to anybody.

guy across from her:*a bit stunned* ... says nothing.

That wasn't too bad, but earlier in the conversation he'd told her he sold his iPod to pay his cell phone bill and she was up in arms:

girl: "Why would ANYONE sell their iPod? I mean.. why not your car?"
guy: "My car. Seriously. For an extra $100. How would I get to work?"
girl: "Ok then... your cell phone, your snowboard gear, or something, but your iPod?!?"

I'll say it again. For some, college is just not a sound investment.
