I don't read freshmeat. I search for things there. It isn't something I really care to see everyday.

you dont have to, you can subscribe to the linux kernel entry on freshmeat and recieve an email when a new version is out.

I don't subscribe to the kernel announce list. I don't care to read a bunch of garbage everday.

so release information is not garbage when its on slashdot but it is garbage when it comes from the actual source?

If they tell us when the release of XP is, or when the release of a new variant of Code Red or the like is out, why not the kernel.

Then by this very logic, CNN should be running stories on the latest Linux kernel release? XP is a bit different from 2.4.13 to 2.4.14 and Code Red made quite an impact on the Internet.

If you don't, tough. It obviously is going to stay no matter how many of you comment on it

That may be so, but dont expect the opposite and rely on slashdot to only run the stories you want. I bet if slashdot wasnt running stories on kernel updates that stories would still be submitted every release.

I made the same observation this morning and I called AT&T about just this, I explained that my TOS states that I can run the software if I take the needed steps to ensure the security of my machine so that it does not interrupt the service of other customers. The lady was tottally clueless about my TOS and said there was nothing that could be done, and no matter whom I talked to about getting 80 unblocked for me it would not happen. So I guess that I cant violoate the TOS but they can do what they want to interrupt my service even if its against the contract...

If Customer chooses to run such applications, Customer should take the appropriate security measures. Neither AT&T nor @Home Network shall have any liability whatsoever for any claims, losses, actions, damages, suits or proceedings resulting from, arising out of or otherwise relating to the use of such applications by Customer, including without limitation, damages resulting from others accessing Customer's computer."

If X complains that it cant find screens its not that it cant physically detect a connected monitor, its that it cant find any of those modes listed that will approprately work with your vid card/monitor combo. It may bee that it cant detect the RAM on your card so it wont support the mode you want, prolly why you only got 320x200. I have an LCD monitor and it works fine, I had to edit my XF86Config myself to get the settting just right tho. Might look something like this:

  10. Not always compatable on Why Faster CPUs? What About SMP? · · Score: 1

SMP is a "design" that has to be programed for. For example, Windows 9x does not support more than 1 CPU. Windows NT/2000 does. Even if your OS does support more than 1 cpu (incl linux) the programs have to use the SMP abilities. It would create a huge load on the backs of programmers becuase they would have to include SMP routines in their programs, as well as non SMP. Also, ACPI is not SMP safe under linux, as many things cant be run on SMP computers (various programs are not SMP safe). All in all, programing for 1 cpu is a much more simplified process, and its a good reason as to why it probably doesnt catch on as much.

Yes, heat is one thing in overclocking but ever wonder why some guy can crank is 500E to 750 with the OEM heat sink/fan combo and the guy next to him has to use a peltier? You have to have good quality silicon to get to higher speeds and thats why dedicated overclockers will look for a certain week manufactured intel chip like...week 28 from ireland or something. Its because they have finer silicon. If intel makes these things operate on low power...they also have to have the quality silicon it takes to get higher speeds. If they use a .18 die process then sure...it might look good but to keep the price down to compete it will probably be a .25 or .22 micron. Less power doesnt also mean less heat...sure there is a direct link between more wattage and more heat but this thing may run so hot its not even funny even tho its only at 2 watts! 17. Qwest communications on How Reliable is the Trans-Atlantic Link? · · Score: 2

Qwest has a really, really fast backbone with many trans-atlantic links. They use an OC-768 link in North America. Check out their network. Our company hosts our web server (needs like yours...it has international audience) with them and its fast but the only problem is that their customer service sucks (well...from our experience). Many trans-atlantic companies have redundancy plans. The canada to iceland link went down last year (severed fibre) and it routes through satalite. Its slow ping wize but it is still fast. There are also many redundant fibre pairs that they can use in times of failure. If you are affraid of your traffic not making it overseas, don't worry because even if some place looses ALL of their connections they will route through another ISP and people can still get to your web site if the involved parties (including you) have a BGP scheme implemented.
