I worked telephone Tech Support in the late 90's for a ISP that catered to small and medium sized businesses. Often I would hear things like 'Thanks for your patience, I'm not very computer literate.' I always told the caller not to worry and that I would be absolutely clueless trying to accomplish what the caller does on a day to day basis.
This attitude paid off as I'm now a member of their Network Engineering team.
and that's the main reason why I rarely visit slashdot anymore. (sigh) I don't know, maybe its just me..but somehow I don't think linus torvalds is the messiah.
these things can still be ripped, can't they? I mean..if the DVDCA really wants to crack down on piracy you'd think they'd fight any attempt to create this kind of thing. I mean, why spend $25 bucks on a movie if you're just gonna rip it anyway? Why not spend $3?
I really like Be. It autodetected ALL of my hardware on install, the only thing I had to manually install were the experimental opengl drivers. Anything that will get developers to write for Be is good. I'm going to buy Be 5 despite the decision to go free of charge. This could be a great platform, all we need is some developers.
All I know is that without the space program, I couldn't have Tang for breakfast. And damnit, I need my Tang. Imagine what new kinds of freeze dried flavor sensations would come out of a manned mission to mars! Seriously though, I hear people calling for more Nasa budget cuts. I hear that the space program is no longer relevent; that no further advancements can possibly come from it. Bull. http://www.marssociety.org
I mentioned this is the poll and thought it would be good to post it here too. Second Harvest is a non-profit company that runs food banks throughout the United States, supplying local food shelves, shelters, missions and others with food. For several months we've had plans in the work to capitalize on the excess food hoarded for y2k. Check out http://www.secondharvest.org for more details and to find a local Food Bank in your area.
If anything, a problem of this magnitude that requires nearly a trillion dollars in fixes would have pulled us out of a recession or at least kept it from getting worse. Just like WWII, all it took was for something to require billions and billions of dollars to be spent on something. The ripple effects of all that money would create jobs all over the place. On a different point, I know a lot of people who stocked up like mad. Personally, all I stocked up on was a couple 24 packs of mountain dew and coke, some chips and some extra cans of beef stew. Katz's point that people had placed their faith in tech..well maybe. But I could feel an 'on-edge' attitude among people. Like they could snap at any moment. At the liquor store last Friday, (yes I also bought a couple of 24 packs of St. Pauli Girl too), no one would look anyone else in the eye, preferring distrusting sideways glances.
This guy did it all, he was a politician, a soldier and a scientist. He invented bifocals, the franklin stove and others. He was the first to propose daylight savings time, (though it's still pitch black when I leave for and leave from work in the winter time...). He is also credited with creating the first political cartoon. He was instrumental in drumming up support european support for america during the revolutionary war, especially the french.

Will we ever see open source commercial games in the mainstream? Not any time soon. Where would the financial incentive be if you were going to release a game, and give away the source for it? Assuming you had a good product, you'd end up competing with a bunch of other companies, each with their own distrubution of your game. RedHat Quake, Suse Quake...no..somehow I just don't see this happening. Has ESR taken into consideration that id is in the game business to...gasp...make money?
Open Source is fine, but sometimes I wonder if we're delusional to think that it can solve any software problem. I mean, if my steak isn't cooked well enough, I just send it back to the chef. I don't pass it around to all my chef-buddies to see if they can cook it better.
The first rule in economics..you do not talk about economics....no wait a minute that's not it.
It seems to me that the people who would most like to see taxes on e-commerce are politicians and big business. Politicians want it so they can soak more money out of the masses. Big Business wants it because they know they can afford it and the smaller companies will be thrown from the walls
Hannibal is at the gate and I, for one, am writing my representatives.
Sorry, but a pen just ain't gonna cut it when I'm skewering somebody with a railgun. I also have the nasty habit of slamming my mouse on the desk when i miss or get killed. I'd probably bust that pen. Even so, it could be used for games like Civ2 or AOE2...hmm...
I have to take issue with a couple things in the FoF.
After reading some of it, I found that Jackson claimed that the pricing of win98 upgrade at $89 instead of $49 was a violation of antitrust. $49 being the break even point. And? What, they can't sell their product for a profit? They're supposed to just give it away? This strikes me as extremely anti-capitalist and very dangerous. I don't want to get melodramatic, but should I start waving the ole hammer & sickle now?
Was Microsoft legally required to make sure that windows would run on competitors versions of DOS? Microsoft didn't have a monopoly on gui os's at the time did they? Couldn't DrDOS make their own stinkin' gui? Why does microsoft have to help a competitor compete?
While I agree that Microsoft has engaged in some anti-competitive behavior, a lot of the FoF seemed to be a rant against profit and capitalism. Capitalism is not a dirty word people. I don't know about you, but I think most companies are out to make profits. When the govt steps in and says, "No, you can't sell your product for what the market will bear, you have to sell it for less or we're taking you to court", you enter a slippery slope that leads to..and please don't flame me..communism.
To quote one of my favorite movies...
"I can no longer sit back and allow the communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids."
I'm sure the Prince of Space will come to our rescue.
They prefer to be called cybermats.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, of course.
Does anybody know if sony plans to put more 80gb PS3s on the market prior to the Metal Gear Solid release later this year?

You've got my signature. Millennium, at its best, beat X-files hands down. That third season was a stinker, though.
if arcades carried more pinball machines.. guy just wants to play Mars Attacks 2000 and can't find a damn table...

I skimmed through the dlcppi dissertation on napster and I didn't see anything about restricting peer to peer file sharing. Did I miss something?

I couldn't stop laughing when a buddy of mine showed me his new 17 inch monitor. It was a sampo.
"I think sampo is a strapless evening gown."
I'll take 100BaseT over trying to copy Commander Keen from a bulletin board at 2400baud anyday.

I plan to blame any problems I have with my servers at work on EL Nino.
it might go a little something like this... http://www.penny-arcade.com/cam.shtml
hmmmm..I just can't decide which movie to watch...Any Given Sunday, Rudy, Air Bud: Golden Reciever or Blue Chips
No..hold on..here's a brick wall I can pound my head against instead.
