The very first slide crows about the large extent "Non-IT" people have in the selection of strategic IT purchases.
It's clear that Microsoft and Unisys are targeting clueless management types rather than IT types with their ads. Any counter-campaign must likewise target management.
I hate the term "Digital Rights Management". It's a bland euphemism.
The correct term should be "Digital Rights Denial." Once you call it by the correct name, the debate is clarified.
So, apparently lack of good DRD is the main "obstacle" to getting information into digital format? Well, here's a simple solution: Don't put your information in digital format. Wow. That took a rocket scientist.
I am not an American, but in NO WAY did America have this coming. My thoughts today are with everyone in the U.S.
To justify this despicable act of mass murder in any way is psychopathic. I heard reports that Palestinians were cheering the attack on the streets.
What this shows is that radical Islamic groups are the enemies of everything which Western civilization stands for. Unfortunately, they have radicalized the Palestinian population to such an extent that a large part of the Palestinian population are also enemies of Western civilization.
I do not know any solution to this mess. But to attempt to justify such a despicable act is disgusting beyond words.
The Netwinder failed because it was way too expensive. Why buy a Netwinder for twice the price of a PC?
There are companies like e-smith that turn a PC into an appliance just as easy to use as the Netwinder. Their software is freely-downloadable, and support is cheap.
It's an add-on for Tcl which uses almost the same syntax as the Tk toolkit, but renders using curses. If you're familiar with Tk and it's widgets, you'll be right at home with CK.
I see something much more sinister for the WINE project that Microsoft simply killing off Corel's involvement in WINE.
Microsoft signs a special deal so Corel gets access to Windows source code "to help build.NET." M$ sits still for six months. M$ then sues the WINE project, claiming that some of Corel's contributions are covered under NDA. Of course, M$ won't have a leg to stand on, but its ability to draw out court cases will kill off WINE.
I believe the WINE leaders should thank Corel profusely for their contributions in the past -- and immediately cease to accept any further contributions from Corel.
ANY scheme like this can be trivially cracked. You just need two sound cards.
Play the "secure" format and run an analog cable from one sound card's output to the other sound card's input, re-digitize and conver to MP3.
The analog transfer will probably introduce enough noise to destroy most watermarking schemes. One analog transfer won't appreciably degrade the music quality, and once you have it in MP3 format, you can make digital copies to your heart's content.
The SDMI proponents are idiotic if they think they can prevent hacking.
This _exact_ situation happened to me. I informed my former employer that I did not support their patent applications. I agreed to do the minimum which I was legally obligated to do, but refused to give them any assistance in drafting the patent or explaining anything to the patent agent. They were not happy, but they lived with it.
I used exactly this solution to help a client get out of ORBS. I set up a Linux box running Sendmail which handled outside mail and did relay checking. It used a different view of the DNS world which convinced it to forward mail to the NT box because of a better MX record preference. For outgoing mail, since the NT box's IP was blacklisted, the Linux box simply did masquerading to give it a sanitized IP.:-)
This required absolutely NO changes to the NT setup and was up and running flawlessly within a few hours.
For roaming users, it should be relatively simple to whip up a Web page which does authentication and then adds in the roaming IP address to Sendmail's access_db for 30 minutes so the mobile user can relay.

I wrote an essay called The Subversion of Democracy.
Why should the free software community care about Microsoft? Who cares if Microsoft cannot find a way to coexist with free software?
I have a product which uses Ck; there are screen shots here.
this is not. It's a port of Tk (the Tcl graphical toolkit) to curses, and it is truly excellent.

I feel equally threatened here in Canada. Please see my web site for my comments.

The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.
Clearly, obfuscated code is not the "preferred form of the work for making modifications to it."
You need to fire your lawyer and hire one who can read.
Just block experian.com and the entire class B 167.107.0.0/16 network. That's what I did.

Nah. But they do work instead of surfing your Web site, I guess.
Looks around at nearby desktops at work...
Funny, I see 25 Linux desktops. There are another 30 at a client I'm about to visit.
How sad. It would be much better for all concerned if they'd use that time to read a book.
No wonder many young people are semi-literate.
I used to work for Chipworks which does reverse-engineering for a living. Most of their work is to protect intellectual property from infringers.
They also used their tools to recover data from a flight computer in the Swissair crash. Is that a bad thing?

Actually, the whole thing goes like this:
touch; unzip; finger; mount; yes; yes; gasp; umount.
I'm sure the kinky among us can find some more UNIX commands to put in there. biff or cat, anyone?

Movie? What's that? Haven't seen a movie in 5.5 years (coincidentally, when our first daughter was born.)
:-)
Just have young kids.
My Remind calendar program has been using this technique since 1990. The patent is clearly invalid.
If anyone wants to fight this patent, I will be happy to provide evidence and testimony of prior art.
