Ignoring the content of the bill, the constitution allows the President 10 days excluding Sundays to sign or veto the bill or else it becomes law by default... EXCEPT if Congress adjourns, in which case there wouldn't even be a discussion about overturning the veto since they're away.

So what's the big deal? Bush's got the constitutional authority (for real for a change) to drag his feet for that long. Is it that within these days they're still wiretapping? Let's choose our battles, here... they've been doing it for YEARS and another 10 days is just a drop in the bucket.

Plus, judging from how my father feels about his middle-management job inside Sales (for another company), these guys get a lot of pressure and flak when things go wrong that aren't really under control so it's no surprise they'll see it as just another gig.

What really gets me suspicious is that I always see "SF or NYC" in stories regarding this move. Has no one decided yet? Hell, if my job asked me to follow them moving to either City A or City B, I'd probably not commit anything until I knew which one, also.

Too bad GP2X is only "open source" instead of open source:

The GPL requires for the release of the source code to users of the binary application (i.e. GP2X users); however, the source code was not released when the GP2X was released to consumers.

It's a fun little gadget with its own merits, yes. But on in personal belief system, on which everyone is entitled to their own, building off of GPL and then not honoring the license is worse on the karma scale than obviously proprietary lockout schemes.

  5. Power as a Problem on Sony VP Salutes DS, Promises PSP Can Still Compete · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article's short but sweet. A curious thing he mentioned was that Sony had to tell developers that they wouldn't set the world alight by porting their PS2 games into it, which was what the first batch essentially was.

Meanwhile Nintedo's handheld power has always been behind their console power. While it didn't eliminate straight-ports, it quickly exposed ports for being gimped versions of full games... meaning a lot of portable development went towards unique games unlike their more homebodied cousins.

I'm not going to hand Nintendo that on a platter, though. It's probably just a side effect of trying to get rediculous battery life out of portable systems. Sony on the other hand just wanted to trump the competitors on brute force alone and win the checkbox wars. It's a neat gadget, though, and it's finally hitting its stride thanks to developers finally developing the right kinds of games for it.

So, as always, it's always comes down to the games themselves. With great power comes great responsibility.

Which is MY point. The site isn't a consumer's guide. Being able to run Windows isn't unique to the MacBook Pro on the Apple line. Would a consumer not know it can run Windows? Maybe... but I certainly don't expect every single article about a hardware revision to include it.

There isn't even a conference or "special event" regarding this. I can still see this as being news, but for drooling fanboy action there's plenty going on over there where the iPhone display is standing.

As far as RTFA, when the first line reads:
"MacBook Pro has received its latest periodic makeover, making the machine faster, leaner and greener, the company announced Tuesday."

the tone has been set. Is it too much to ask that they at least PRETEND to distance themselves? Let's not turn a good revision on a great product into a circle-jerk, shall we?

How come they don't mention they come with iLife? How come they don't mention the OS has a *nix underbelly? How come they don't mention that Macs plug into the wall?

Perhaps Apple itself wants to position its hardware away from Windows and being "PC-like." Perhaps it's not relevant to the discussion regarding a simple hardware revision. Perhaps that comment is just a desire to see any Apple news be a commercial.

Maybe on a few channels, sure, but when government makes it a standard everyone has to fall in line or else.

Technology is at a point where TV ratings are broadcast along the signals and just about any TV purchased in the last 10 years has had the ability to block based on content down to the individual program level. I have no sympathy for parents who can't read the page and a half of instructions included with their TV which will let them protect the kids they're always crying to politicians about.

When my nephews are over and want to watch TV, I set the kiddie profile suitable for their age. Primetime Nick isn't primetime Playboy TV and it won't ever be. Their business model is based on being kid friendly.

What people like me advocate for is the elimination of silly laws and regulations that stem from a nanny-state mentality. While The Free Market(tm) doesn't solve everything on it's own, this is certainly one of those issues where the industry will settle itself into niches and, in the end, everyone is left happy because everyone has choice.

I'm not sure that's such a fair comparison: Starcraft isn't likely to cannibalize sales and if Blizzard gets a good ROI from this new project, the success of WoW in comparison is moot... IF the teams developing aren't being pulled away from maintaining and enhancing WoW in a way that matters. Looking at the later half of EQ, most of the staff wound up replaced by less experienced (read: cheaper) developers to maintain it since at that time the code base was mature enough that nothing could be messed with that would destroy the world as players knew it.

I'll assume they did the math and figured it'd be a good investment. Blizzard is a business first, after all.

Meanwhile, if they made a new MMOG to top themselves with WoW, they risk the new project cannibalizing their own subscribers. Back in the day I played Everquest and with new-at-the-time games like Anarchy Online and Planetside I still couldn't bring myself to pay for more than one online game since A) the new game consumes time, B) time is linked to progress in MMOGs by design, C) I'm paying full price regardless of how many hours I actually use each period.
