The problem is not in reliability, but in ignorance. Must Linuzzz administrators think they are "inmune" and this sense of false security does that many of them don't even care to review the security of there servers and many use Out of the box settings.
BTW... It seems that many people feel insulted cause my tag of Linuzzz but every single article about MS is taget M$, haha, etc... No reaction... Oh, and I don't care about being labeled troll (BTW, my karma at this moment is excellent), which means that not evry slashdoter here is thasst fanatical and a lot of moderators actually agree with my ideas.
I am PROUD just because...in this place it seems like using Windows is a shame. Well, I'm not ashamed of that. Oh, and I use Linuzz as a server, and I have a Mak as well, but nobody here finds THAT to be insulting. Go figure.
Not completly true, but the point is: the argument usially used when MS adds, for example, animations to the Windows, 3d font rendering, transparent borders , etc is: " is they only used those programmers and resources to fix bug or to do SOMETHING USEFUL... instead they do that crap. But when MacOZ or some Linuzzz distro adds it, nobody thinks about those infamious resources... no, that is the RuLeZ!!!!!!
This version contains new beautiful green artwork, KDE 3.5.7 and parts of KDE 4, SUSE-polished GNOME 2.20, a GTK version of YaST, a new 1-click-install technology, new and redesigned YaST modules, compiz and compiz fusion advances,
Great... Let bash MS for adding more "bloatware" (Use this word only when it's related to MS). When Linuzz, MacOZ or other non-MS system adds it, please call it "great enhancements".
Be sure to use Ubuntu or some other NEW linuzzz distro. I remember having the same problems with mandrake and even mandriva some years ago. The point is: XP is now what...6 years old... and yes, it had those limitations. In vista you can now choose the source from CD/DVD (just replacing temporarly Vista DVD), or from network if you have configurated the TCP protocol. If your Bios allows you to map a USB drive, this can be selected as well. GP is comparing a 2007 Linuzzz distrubution with a 2002 Windows release. OK, lets compare Vista with Caldera 2.0.
Well, duh, try to install Linuzzz on a hardware without the controllers drivers... How in hell you will install it then without the drivers on some media? How is that different?
Hmm? Do you KNOW what ytou are talking about? When was the last time you installed Windows? XP (and for that matter NT4, 200 and Vista) comes with a bootable CD, so floppy is not needed at all. Hell I yesterday installed XP on a floppy-less Dell Inspiron 8000.
And moderators, how the HELL is that lie rated INSIGHTFUL? Oh, we are on slashdot, so we know the level of intelligence we have here.
Actually many here will, of course, disagree with me, but this is a very smart and good move, not only for Microsoft, but for the users. There are a lot of users thta have their Windows locked from further updates, because they installed the GA software and they WERE actually running a pirated Windows. Some of them have, after that , adquired a legal license, but others, just sit there with their pirated copy.
This is actually a good solution for those people and a civilizated solution for the whole problem.
Sure, bring on now the "oh, MS wants just to mantain the monopoly", "oh, they will kill people privacities", etc... No matter waht you say, this IS a good move.
People seem to cheer everytime a law helps "liberty" on the web. But is it really liberty they are promoting? Or is it anarchy? I have sympathy for those who think that not keeping the logs is good , and not having a log at all is better. I don't like either that somebody will missuse MY data (whatever that is) in this way. BUT, does it work in the real world?
What if some users are uploading/downlöoading child pornography or other illegal material? How do I track down the motherfucker? Yes, some people will say, let everyone do whatever they want... But no, laws are laws and log files are an effective (yet, imperfect) way of keeping things in order, at a minimum.
Is like having a law that says that all door locks are ilegal...
It is. IIS7 is configurated via the usual GUI. The settings are STORED in text files, though, and not in the register as it was in older versions (to comply with.NET apps). But an administrator should not feel the diference.
Nothing is secure. There are more secure and less secure things, but nothing can be 100% secure. It all depends of the who is installing and configuring, if you got some adware I'm sure you are the one to be blamed somehow. Sometimes things are not what they appear to be.
IIS on a Windows 2003 server? That is one of the better and most secure combinations you can have today! Seriously, don't fool yourself. IIS 6 and 7 have a record of almost none critical exploits. In comparation with Apache it simply shimnes. And Windows 2003 is rock solid.
You don't need to be Einstein to understand that scientific advances are proportional to the economical status of the land. And I'm not talking about the economical status of the elite of the country but about the MEDIUM economical status of the population. Good economics is almost always equal to good education, good universities, quality investigations, cooperation projects, etc. I don't see any direct connection between ideology or religion and science. Many good scientific have been religious in some form ot believe in god: Newton, Einstein, Bohr, etc.
My girlfriend (yes, I have one) have a macbook pro and has been experimenting this problem since the day she bough the thing. Sometimes it works well, but some days blue toth connections just intermitently sut downs and there is no way to get it right. The thing is that there is no way to consistently reproduce the problem.
The funny thing is that Apple support here in Stockholm said to here that "there is nothing wrong with it".... Oh well...
Yes, sometimes I feel like this is not Slashdot but some kindergarten. Serioulsly, here you the laws of Economics are sometimes weaker than the "my father is stronger than yours" laws.
Hmm... Sorry but that have that half worng. MS wanted to work with Apple but I'm sure that Apple was more willing to work with MS than the other way around. Remember that in those times, Apple was a dying company, Stevie Jobie was not back yet and the Mac was losing more users than I'm losing my hair. Apple needed desperatly some cash (and moral) injection and this is when MS came in.
In this case, I would say that Novell is in absolutly the same situation. When Ubuntues and RedHats and Mandrivas and the whole world is releasing distros that are more popular than you, you NEED something to stick out. So, yes, MS is interested on a partnership, but they are always searching new business fields. But the other part... they are those who are REALLY interested.
It is true that Apple are in their right to release the device under the license they want. The problem is in the user. How in hell do you want to buy a device with is locked to a single carrier, and more, whith a solded battery (we are talking about a PHONE here!), and wich is imo (and in other's opinions) overpriced, and not even the "best" in their class? Just because it has a rotten apple drawn in it's surface? Well, the buyers **are** the stupid part here. Hell, I don't even own an Ipod because it's not good enough for me. Having the Apple in the white shining surface may make you cool in the eyes of the teenagers, but doesn't mean a thing for me.
had it been say OpenOffice you could add a theme to restore the old look and optimize the code by either compiling it or taking out unneeded features to make it be faster.
Yet everytime somebody talks about thebenefits of OS everubody uses the woruls *COULD*. Yes, you *could* do that, but you knoe any normal persson/busnes with the right knowlege/time/money in their hands to make such a hugh and potentially dangerous customization? Hell, I'll better pay for a closed source solution in that case. The question is not what yopu COULD do. Yes, you could customize the Linuzzz kernel. My grandma cannot. The question is what you practically are willing to do to solve a problem, and is it worth all the trouble?

Oh, and BTW, I never post annonymously.

nope, some newer downloads can only be downloaded (without hacking the system) if you have WGA. Those are not critical updates, though.
Critical updates are not locked out even for pirated copies, so don't worry, it's not about that, they take responsability even for pirated copies.
This is actually a good solution for those people and a civilizated solution for the whole problem.

Nope. clippy was added in office 2000.Right clicking on Clippy (or other avatar) used to show the option "use standard help". From day one.
