The more we learn about the OS the more we understand why this is, even trimming down and only running a base system, it is dramatically slower than xp on the same hardware. Thus my no longer using it. I will eventually run it full time on a machine, as there is I have to in order to become familiar with it and my client base gets newer computers using the new OS. If it weren't for Microsoft, I would probably have to get a real job.

The big question here though is of all the people using MS Office 95/97/2k/2k3/2k7 did you pay for it? If you paid for it, is the license you are using now the one you are allowed to use, ie. you purchased office while at college and now you are in the real world?? I knew a guy that signed up for junior college classes and never went so he could buy software for his business at the university book store!!!! When I told him that was not in line with the EULA he laughed and said they would have to catch him... (He does the same thing with the Adobe Suites)

This is what keeps programs that work like OOo out of the mainstream. That and the fact that even though it works and you can edit documents from other people and they can edit yours, people have this 'feeling' they are missing something because EVERYONE else is using MS Office

However if these people HAD TO PAY THE AMOUNT MICROSOFT wants them to pay, they would never do it.

Autopatcher was a windowy tool in the Microsoft mold.(you can take that either way) It was very nice and if you just needed a few things you could dig through the folders and find your toys, it did do some strange registry gymnastics that had odd results at times so I stopped using it in it's full capacity. But they provided you everything, as in, they distributed MS software. The Heise CTUPDATE however, does not provide you anything but a windows version of wget and a script to a) download all the latest updates and b) create an iso of the updates that will autorun and autoinstall all the updates. Very different, as they do not distribute MS software :)

Also, when I install updates via CTUPDATE windows knows they were installed and does not re-install the software on the next update, as opposed to AutoPatcher, where most times windows update re-installed most of the updates.

The lesson here, is HOW you choose to do what you intend to do. If AutoPatcher changed only gave away a script to download and compile the data then they would not have a problem.

When I inform them that they need to get properly licensed they look at me like I threatened them, and still don't believe it after you show them. You must realize the teachers "think" they need to "learn" each new program (even though many of them know nothing more about MS products other than Stupid Office Tricks), and that trying to teach another product would cause them undue harm. I tried to get a school to put at the end of a class (last day/week kind of thing) a little "other products" lesson but they would have none of it, even if I did the "showing" of the other products. Even though for a school district, OpenOffice is free, and SO IS STAR OFFICE, (fill out the form and they send you a disc that ALL YOUR STUDENTS and FACULTY may use), they see they are getting a great value discount "from $500 to $84". It is the old, "but it was on sale" mindset.
