First it is interesting to see an anglo-saxon court going against Nature and Science. This is a very typical example as, no matter the hundreds of years that passed, courts are still bound to Middle Age concepts of property. It is not admirable to see people getting charged for things due to inertia, lawyers defending anti-scientific concepts, or widly known superstitions. Even a president gets killed by a "magic bullet" that violates every possible law of mechanics.
What if the seeds did came with the wind? Why the farmer should care to destroy them? Is there a clear (TM) on the top of every wind-blown seed? Why Monsanto didn't care to produce seeds that wouldn't blow by the wind? Or maybe the next step is to take Nature to court for robbing a few seeds?
Maybe Monsanto will care for the last one, when it screws up something. I really can't imagine what may happen in a situation when a genetically modified plant or animal gets into Nature. Consequences may be quite negative as humans aren't there to control any conditions or relations. A genetically modified plant to resist parasites may force the appearence of parasites that will be many times more resistent to pesticides and other means of control. In fact we may already seeing this. If the farmer is speaking the truth, then we may be facing the spread of plants beyond limits where we still could control any possible "oops".
So let's see. Maybe the next court case will be a revival of the "People of town N vs town's cock", where people blamed the poor bird for not singing in due hours... Only here it will be Monsanto vs. Nature for the last one blowing up their profits...
The only thing one can say now is that current methods of cloning may introduce defects in DNA
And our environment doesn't produce mutations? Hey they are probably even more in a order than the technological process.
Sex does not either prevent or cause mutations. Yes it does not cause... However the large majority of mutations are tend to be recessive. That means that the original genes are generally dominant in the process of growth and development of the organism. Also the large majority of mutations are dangerous for organisms. But in this process sex also presents an answer. Truly this one already is distant from the genetic problem itself. It is the process of selection of a mate, from sex behaviours and down to thousands of spermatozoids fighting their path.
So the problem is not just a mixing of gene pools.
Not identical. There is a cell on the original organism that IS identical. But that cell may have been well bathed by radiation, beaten, washed, turmoiled, raped and finally removed by a group of clonisators...
So that cell may be something like 95% of the original organism IN GENERAL.
Some years ago I read an article where some scientists considered that after the specialization of different organs, DNA becomes selective. That means, the organism will work hard to protect those specific sections supposed to answer to the work of a specific organ, however in that organ, all other DNA will be exposed to God knows what. I don't know if this has become a fact or not. But the idea is very interesting. That would mean that cloning would only be worth to reproduce organs. Everything else would be playing with dice.
No that's not a problem of cloning but design mishap. It seems that this series of positron brains came really buggy. Some old forgotten code that someone wrote a while back in the 50's made it's path to the brain. Let's hope US Robotics & Mechanical Men Corp. finds a solution before he starts playing with the red button...
First this is Deja Vu. The story that Dolly had serious health problems was even discussed here some time ago.
Second what do you think sex is? Just a oooh-my-Gooooooodddd-ooooh-mommmy??? Just ignore this factor for a moment and think. Nature shows that there are some points when even complex organisms may clone. However this occurs in moments when sex turns impracticable. Besides most organisms still try to find solutions to this situation in terms of sex. At least it is known that some birds have the capacity to change sex when there appears only and exclusively members of one sex in the community.
In other cases, on superior animals, such things as cloning can only apear as anomalies. Humans do clone naturally but that happens to women only and in very rare circumstances.
Now why this. For sex to be so stubborn in organisms there should be reasons that practically exclude any other forms of reproduction. Besides it seems organisms do everything to impose a sexist world in reproduction. What is exactly the reason, no one can surely know as natural cloning is very rare. However one can be pretty sure, based on a few theoretical basis, that cloning is real bad for beings. On one organism DNA may suffer tons of damages. Besides, under one organism, reproduction is already on the loose. To avoid serious mutations and rise the chance of survival there is sex.
What is happening with Dolly is the natural result of getting things through the sink. Dolly didn't pass the natural process of selection. God knows what possible mutations can be on the original DNA. Well they were small as Dolly managed to come to light. But they are enough to destroy the poor lamb in a very short time.
Of course one may say that the next step will be to search for "clean" DNA. However, in Nature, that sounds like searching for the "Arians" of genetics. If someone finds a "perfect" DNA for Dolly v. 2.0.1 then that will force the overwrite of the theory of Evolution.
Well M$ didn't screw up this one. However, this story is the clearest example of a future nightmare scenario. Imagine if such things happen under the promiscuity of the.NET overworld? No even this case might not be M$ screwing up everything. No, not directly.

It is interesting to see two moments in this case. First it is how ssh came into life. As far as I remember Ylonen started things much as freelancer. It seems that some of the very first ssh's were even licensed in a BSD form. But later, on version 2, Ylonen opened a company, changed the license to more restrictive terms and started a process that became what we see.
However, it is interesting to note how this process started to become a scandal. For some time, since version 2.1, ssh has been plagued by several bugs. Only 2.4 seems to be realtively free of them, but still it doesn't work too good. This series of problems coincide with the moment when Ylonen started to push ssh as SSH(TM) and restricted some aspects of the license even more.
Frankly it's a pitty. I think that OpenSSH is more weak that the traditional one. Sincerly I do prefer Ylonen's ssh, even in cases when it's uite buggy. OpenSSH has a lot of drawbacks in performance and stability.
However the growing path of bugs and this (TM) hype forces us to think if we really want to continue to use it. Two years ago a bug was solved in hours. Today SSH and whoever is inside of it, take nearly half a month to solve it. If this trend continues, then we surely will go for an option: OpenSSH. And all these (TM)s, (R)s and hype will be of less importance.
This poster is neither an OS X fan or Linux supporter. he is just in the line of "who rules, who suxx". And it is interesting to see/. going on it. Does this means that we finally get some peace from the Linux Hyper "Cry-Lowd" command?
I wonder when Linux Torvalds, Alan Cox or anyone on the top Linux development promised to make it "easy-for-the-masses". If anyone cared at least to read interviews, then he knows that Linus position is crystal clear - develop the server side. However he doesn't mess with anyone who wants to make it "user-friendly". Well there are several distros trying to do it and its THEIR right to do it, and let's hope they get successful on this. But it's the distros, stupid...
Now it is amazing to see that someone comes up with the eternaly promised OS X and suddenly we, the Linux community, are not only "failing" in some nebulous promess. No. We are failing because an OS that till now didn't make the highway looks much better than Linux. I can't say it's worse or better. Because I have never seen it, and also because this OS is much more overhyped than any.NET initiative. Maybe that thing is real cool, real effective and real good. OS/2 is also one of the best OSes ever made you know?
Besides we take this articleand what we see?
"When the Linux hype hit its height about a year ago, there were predictions that it was going to take market share from every operating system out there, including from the Mac but especially from Windows."
Ok that's cool, that's real great... Well I know that we are after MS. And we do are after MS. And we are going to hunt Redmonds birdies as far as we can. But that's an historical problem made of tons of people who were dropped out of the MS boat and found refuge on Linux world.
There were also risks that we could take some Sun or BSD piece of the market but really that was not in our plans to take over the world... However "including the Mac"??? Who knows Mac users, perfectly understands that these are the ones in the end of the line. A Mac user will more probably to turn to Windows and barely will ever risk to enter our world. Because, apart of the good looking desktops "a-la Mac", everything else is a Mac user worst nightmare.
Ok that Slashdot is too biased e know. That's undoubtful and unforgetable.
But that does not change the fact that M$ is playing dirt. Some people claim that "it's natural" and that "everyone does" and "it's expected" in a game development stage.
Whoever does this is acting quite uethical in relation to its potential consumers. If "everyone" does this then we have a problem in this industry.
But I could accept it... Should I? No! That would be accepting that "butter" can be stamped on every piece of grease with a look near to butter. That would be accepting certain companies to claim their product is made of oranges, lemons ot other fruits. That would be accepting that major corps would "forget" to add the level of conservants in their products.
Yes, it's a piece of software. But M$ sells it to me the same way as Coca-Cola sells me its cans. Why should I accept?
Note the Orthodoxes are against many countings and IDs because in some of them may appear the idoneous "666".
13 floor is non-existent in some places with predominant anglo-saxon population
2 is also for some cultures a "forbidden" or "bad" number. Btw never give two flowers to a girl from slavic culture.
Some think that the square root of two and pi were "demonic" numbers for Pitagorics, a mysthical sect of Antiquity and predecessors of many Christian ideas and with some love to play maths. The fact of the existence of real numbers was felt as a "fault" in the building of the Universe... Btw Pitagorics were responsible for the advent of prime numbers.
Nope. Kursk was more majestic by its huge head-to-head in such short amount of time. Pokrovka Encounter is until now the only and unique Techno-Battle of History were both parties use all technology possible and were in near equal terms.
However Stalingrad was more pivotal. If Germans won Stalingrad then the road was open in two ways:
The Volga plains up to the Urals.
Caucasus.
The plains were fundamental because they were the main food supply and many defense factories were in fact in these plains.
The Caucasus was also fundamental because then the biggest oil supply was in Azerbaidjan.
If Russia won then Germans woul be forced to make a defensive stand over South Russia which would be very damaging for future operations. Russians won and Germans were forced to get into defense.
Kursk was the attempt to turn things back. However the Russian Army had also to made a big push in the same place...
Six million killed in nazi camps to over 60 million killed in soviet gulags.
First it seems that you are referring to Poland and Jews only. In the whole it seems that there were no less than 12 million Jews who ended either barbecued, shot or gazed... Note that nazis didn't worry too much to send all jews to concentration camps. In Ukraine and Bielorussia they did the dirty job almost in place. There was even the "Death Truck" where people where killed by the escape gases of the trucks that carried them to the mass graves.
On what concerns other nations I should note you that the large majority of slavians, latins and germans was doomed to destruction. Hitler's plan covered a massive clean up that even poor Deutchlander's couln't avoid. In this plan slavians were well doomed and already in the war there were a few serious clean ups. At least 3 million slavians died in concentration camps.
Uhm...they were. They were often sent without any guns just like WW1
Near BS. But that's because of the "often". It wasn't so often, but existed. Their name are the "Shtrafnye Batalliony" and were made of Gulag prisioners, criminals and soldiers who deserted their units. But note that this bloody scheme had always a well armed NKVD batallion behind them, that shoot everyone who went back.
Excuse me? The Germans almost won. If there hadn't been some rumblings in Yugoslavia (and we all know that kind of terrain just swallows up infantry), Germany would have had more than enough to capture the Kremlin. That delayed them a coupled months before marching into the soviet union. Time that they needed before the Russian winter set in. Same kinda thing happened to Napoleon
Yougoslavia was "done" when Wehrmacht was on the outskirts of Moscow. And this winter story is pure BS. Germans knew were they go and knew the Hell of winter they could meet. You know where Guderian became the great strategist we know? Just 15 kilometers from where I'm now and he studied here in the 30's. That's why people name here the Tank Institute as "Academya im. Guderiana". And look. I'm just on the other side of the Volga...
A desciple should never go against his teacher. And Guderian paid many times for this. Many times Russian generals knew how and when Guderian would attack because they were either his teachers or ex-campus pals...
Rommel who also studied in Russia never dared to go to the East Front...
Germans got caught in a brilliant trap set by a group of russian generals headed by Zhukov. One of the "visitng cards" of this operation was the first massive use of rockets ever - the Katiusha or "Stalin Organs".
Ok let's go to the extremes:
Man on the Moon??? Tell me that America exists... Do you really believe the the USA exists? That they have Coca-Cola, Highways, and Space Shuttles? Look Coke is nothing more than burned sugar. Anyone can do this. Highways? They can film that on Germany. Space Shuttle? Cool, look at Japan's technological powers. They can simulate that! and even have the money for it!
Ohhhhhh!!!! There is the dollar... I heard it is mainly produced here...
Space Age really started in the Nazi fields of Pennemunde. Sad to say this but it is a fact. It was a V2 the first rocket to reach the edge of Space and boost the interest of nations for it. The limit of near 150 kilometers was reached in 1942. Truly Nazis were only able to produce a ballistic orbit. Besides they were only worried about such orbits. One German general who risked to suggest the development of V2s to reach circular near-earth orbits was arrested for treason...
However it is extraordinary that Goddard's homeland didn't seriously cared for his works. It was only after the war and by taking a few german scientists, that the US started its serious rocket program. Yes, US tried to reach Space by progress was slow and had miserable support (the first planned US satellite was the size of an apple)
Russia managed to get three steps in front of the US. And why? Because it had already a rocket program that started in the 30's. It also got its piece of Pennemunde's treasures (in fact Pennemunde stayed in soviet occupied territory). And the most illarious was that USSR got first to Space because... The A-bomb was heavier than the US one! Recently one Russian scientist noted that this was one of the main factors that gave a boost to Soviet Space program. They had to plan and build rockets more powerful than the US because of the weight of the A-bomb. And when the question came to launch the Sputnik, their tasks were much more easier to solve because they had the powerful R-7 already in place.
Well we see that:
"The money spent to produce the four studies underscores the importance the industry attaches to the issue. Turner said his study, which examined catalog sales, cost $50,000. Another was funded with a $10,000 grant from the World Bank. The two other studies, funded by Ernst & Young LLP and the Tower Group consulting firm, each cost more than $50,000, but the firms declined to say exactly how much they spent."
That is what they spend to save US$17 billion of expenses and a US$1 billion of a foggy "information tax"... Well US$18 billion that they save us from paying (anyway the consumer pays all)
It looks great...
But they claim that 17 billion will be saved by tacking your privacy. Besides the save is made thanks to the fact that someone sells and another buys such information. So there will be people getting some profit from it... Well, under such a figure, profit will be by the hundreds of millions. May be a billion, what is an interesting coincidence with that "information tax"... Well corps don't like to loose money. Not even that one they expect to get...
Now, let's go back to the citation. They paid nearly US$160,000 for these studies. DAMN! Nearly 0,02% of the profit they may be waiting to get. THAT'S A GOLD POT STUDY!!..
You are big, fat and rosy. You sign every paper they put, pay a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ figure and get the source. After some time you get into a piece of code that doesn't get with you program. "Hey you have a bug here." M$ answers "It's not a bug, it's just a feature." Cool you produce a workaround. And launch your prog. However workarounds sometimes tend to mess with what they are supposed to work around. So M$ comes up and claims "You violated our license as you tried to overcome our own code." And here we go on juridical battles, Big Mony guys making faces to each other and DoJ trying another unsuccessful case...
Crypto is needed to secure information from being sniffed, accidently or purposedly seen by a third party or to avoid its diffusion over the limits you set it to be distributed. And crypto is used not only to exchange informations between different parties, or to hide secrets. For example we and many other networks use ssh, VLANs, VPNs and other tools to administer servers, communication equipment or to create private information channels. And most of these tools possess encryption algorythms to avoid information leakage.
For years many organisations use crypto tools for their tasks. And I am pretty sure that Government Agencies even partially support such use. The problem here is not the use of crypto but which crypto tools are used. Unfortunately, here Agencies do play the wrong hand. Their ideas, porposals about crypto are clearly out of sync with modern needs. They would like to see us using those tools that would ease their work. Sorry but it is pretty clear that today these same tools are just easy enough to be broken, bugged or overcome by criminals, terrorists and spies. Some can even be broken by teenagers due to some stupid design flaw or something similar. Anyway, most agencies may accept their defeat, no matter the hardships they fall in, because they have a duty in priority - secure their countries from different types of menace. So the may say some bad words about PGP, SSH and similars but still don't do a finger against them.
And I do believe that most agencies don't speak about crypto users as crooks... With exception of police forces lacking basic infrastructure and knowledge about Internet. There yes, they think they can "secure the world" for you. They look at you with such wild eyes when you say that you use crypto tools to administer the network. Yes, these ones do ask "what you wanna hide" and similar things and look at you most as a gang boss. But these people are not those who decide should crypto be used or not... First there are regulations and laws. Second the control on the use of crypto tools is mostly given not to police but to intelligence agencies. So you may say "go walk" if the guys don't understand your work.
But there is also a group of organisations that for the last years started to talk too much about crypto, hacks and open standards/sources. And speak about their supporters and users asd terrorists, crooks, pyramid makers and criminals. These organisations are the software corporations. I wouldn't be admired that the author messed things a little bit. Note that he first speaks about Zimmerman vs. Network Associates and the fact that these guys wanna hide something. And only then he speaks about the Agencies. I wouldn't be admired that N.A. started a campaign against Zimmerman and started to claim that opening everything would only help criminals and crooks. And calls to help the poor Agencies that live so badly in this hard crypto world...
Not Caucasus but Urals. Stalin/Russia saved the day. Sorry but they did it. If Hitler went up then we wouldn't be here to discuss this... At least I would surely not be here. I may carry some of the oldest european blood but i also have some jewish blood and i am not ashamed of it (but I do hate Sionism). So I would be a ashtray by the most...
No Berlin was sorrounded even before western allies made it to the Elba river, which is quite far from Berlin... In fact Berlin was well located inside the territory ocuppied by the soviets. However due to agreements, Stalin gave a good piece of Berlin to the western allies. Later when relations with US got to frost level, Moscow decided to rise that same Berlin Wall that sorrounded completely West Berlin from the rest of Germany. Until the 80's most if not all contact with the West was made through air.
On what concerns the take of Berlin then one should note that it was one of the biggest battles of WWII. Russians had to overcome an heavily defended fortification line and to fight for every corner. Only the Reichstag (the center of the Nazi Government) took days to be conquered. Historians note that reports about the fight of Reichstag were made on the basis of what floor was conquered.
Well in fact I got a little bit hot... Yes the US did a big help to Russia. But that does not mean that US saved the world. In fact Russia had to do it before even the US really entered the war. If Germany had taken Moscow and pushed over the Volga then hardly the US would not deal with Germany on its own shores.
In fact one should say that Europe was saved by the Soviets while US did the same for Asia and Oceania. If these two countries didn't do what they did then 80% of europeans would probably be slaves or near that. And millions would have ended in a factory or have its skin turned to shoes.
Normandy was a Hell. Sorry but even you americans of today may not totally understand this. In fact only veterans may say what is to stand in a shoreline with Hell falling on you. That should be honored.
But one should also note how many such Hells Russians have seen:
Smolensk
Leningrad
Moscow
Stalingrad
Sevastopol
Kursk and its famous Pokrovka Battle
Kiev
Minsk
And several others. Near Leningrad once Russians lost no less than 200000 soldiers in a German flank attack. Till now people dig their bones from that place...
And note. The first and the only complete Techno Battle that ever happened in History is Pokrovka. Not even Desert Storm goes near it. In Pokrovka both sides had infantry completely pissed off and went full contact with tanks and artillery. Just try to imagine thousands of tanks and other machinery go against each other in a small piece of land... And don't think about those "slow" tanks from films. There the T-34 jumped over the barricades and hills, a heavy German artillery pieces played face to face to several more maneuvarable Russians. And the same happened with Russian artillery cars and German tanks. Russians and Germans not only shot each other as crunched their tanks against each other.
Normandy. Ok I honour the vets who where there. But please people don't say it was the biggest and the best. Not even mighty Pokrovka has this title. That was Stalingrad.
I'm not holding this poor jerk responsible for his country. But I can't stand to hear these polish speak about how badly were treated for 40 years of soviet occupation. Damn they have now a country of their own. And they were some of the very first to help Hitler to do his dirty job. Sorry but this is not History books. It's from very reliable sources that worked on the Reichstag archives. I saw copies of this as I was damn interested on some events that happened in 1938. And I was socked to see how everyone treated and traded with Hitler. In fact he treached everyone. Hitler was a diplomatic monster that managed to cheat everyone. He played with everyone's appetite to gain his power.
In 1938 the only problem with Poland was some minor "worries" about Dantzig (now Gdansk). And how these guys talking about butchering the Czechoslovakia. Poland was even ready to send troops to help Germany deal with the Sudetes.
So I can't stand that people speak only about poor Poland... There is only one poor country here and that's Czechoslovakia. They were the first. And everyone was agreeing or helping the butchering. Poland was acting on it... So?..
Look pal. I have seen how your First Amendment works in your country... Yes you make a lot to defend it. But sometimes it is not worth anything more than the street trash. And it is not Hitler, Stalin, Satan, Hussein or Khameini who take that right from you. It's your own bosses, politicians, Presidents and bureaucritters.
So, for political maturity, first pick up your own. We don't say Reaganomics when someone picks up shitty liberalism and pisses off the whole country...
And you go read the diplomatic cases, the minutes and talk with people who lived the whole shit. It would be much better for your education.
Lived 40 years under Soviet occupation. Who told you to run to Hitler to ask for a piece of Czechoslovakia. It's on there and it is not pretty. So don't try to be more saint that Molotov Ribbentrop or anyone else. Everyone was trading Europe with Hitler. E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E. And Poland was one of them. And that helped Hitler to get Czechoslovakia to its knees. And get you later you fools...

And it is interesting to see /. going on it. Does this means that we finally get some peace from the Linux Hyper "Cry-Lowd" command?
.NET initiative. Maybe that thing is real cool, real effective and real good. OS/2 is also one of the best OSes ever made you know?
Because I have never seen it, and also because this OS is much more overhyped than any
Besides we take this articleand what we see?
Nope. I also live in a quite predominantly Slavic community...
There are already a few "forbidden numbers"
In fact Churchill was one of the WWII actors to clearly show how important was Stalingrad. Read his memories to get an idea of it.
What value does the Alliance gives to it?
