Oblivion PC has an almost identical interface to Morrowind, and yet nobody complained about Morrowind being "dumbed down." (Morrowind appeared on original Xbox, if you remember.) I think it's just trendy for PC gamers to gripe about that in some futile effort to make people believe that playing games on a $1200 PC is a more "pure" experience than on a $400 console. Or something.
I know Syberia has a sequel, it was a rhetorical question. Still sleepy today.
Yes, there's none for the Xbox 360 but:
1) The 360 is still too new to really make a fair comparison, and
2) People (at least here in Slashdot) have been decrying the death of adventure games for longer then the original Xbox has been around. When The Longest Journey came out, people were saying adventure games were dead (or that it was the first adventure game in years), and that was back in 1999.
The real problem, as summed up by another poster below, is that adventure games simply don't sell well compared to other genres. It's not a conspiracy. I'm sure that everyone who complains about the lack of adventure games bought The Longest Journey and Syberia, but that's still just a drop in the bucket compared to the sales of (say) Halo 2. (His post mentioned that the existing cheap distribution methods, the Internet and Xbox Live Arcade, haven't made adventure games more popular, so it's unlikely that Nintendo's distribution system will either.)
Of course, this is Slashdot, so if it's pro-Nintendo regardless of how realistic, it's in.
I love the "Dubya" also. They could at the very least be professional enough to use the man's name instead of a derogatory nickname... hell, even Microsoft is spelled "Microsoft" in articles and not, say, "Micro$oft" or whatever other stupid nickname is used in the comments.
Those who can't be reigned in by typical controls are incarcerated, disappeared or killed, "suicided" is the CIA term, as in any traditional authoritarian regime.
Holy shit, you just demonstrated the point perfectly, by implying that Liberals make decisions only out of pure reason while Conservatives use force and threats! Now, depending on how brainwashed you are, you might actually believe this... but to 90% of the population, BOTH sides of the debate make good points, and the vast majority of people would vote somewhere in-between if they could.
So congratulations, in response to a post about Liberals being obnoxious, you've said something obnoxious.
It also required a long and drawn-out war/revolution to come about, perhaps even a nuclear war (although I don't think the details of it are ever really given in the book; I always assumed it was just the 1950's conception of a nuclear World War III against the Soviets.)
I'm thinking Magnolia Hi-Fi? God I hated that place... I go in for a goddamned universal remote, $100, and I had to practically give a blood sample. That store is only for upper-class snobs buying at least $20,000 in AV equipment, and entirely out-of-touch with the whole "walk in and buy something" concept. It's an electronics store run like a car dealership. Oh, they sell batteries and universal remotes and standard normal stuff like that, and the prices for them are even reasonable, but it's not worth it.
So you're saying that using "sheeple" is desirable (apparently, it's not name calling according to you), but using "idiot" is not?
For what it's worth: I agree. "Sheeple" is the worst possible word you could use. It's the "start ignoring this person" indicator when you're debating... like somebody spelling Microsoft with a dollar sign, it indicates that they are so close-minded that they'll never budge on any of their views, no matter how idiotic.
I think the submitter is paranoid, and most of the people who post to Slashdot (at least in stories like this) are paranoid, and that this story is pretty much just dumping gasoline on the flames.
I mean, hell, probably half the people here think that RFID tags are going to start beaming the brand of their underwear to airport metal detectors. They're JUST BARCODES! Christ.
1) You can turn on the console with the wireless controller, like a TV remote. FINALLY!
2) Every game released for 360, *every game*, has a demo available over Live for free. That's going to increase the quality of games tremendously since publishers know that they can't get away with releasing crap. (Since the lack of a demo, or a crappy demo, will turn gamers off immediately.)
In addition to that, Microsoft isn't making money *by design*. Microsoft's plan from the get-go was that they'd be in the red for the first two generations... they even had a figure they were expecting to lose, and from what I understand they're doing better than projected.
So, basically, your post sums to "I'm stubborn and I can't learn new things, and instead of just admitting that to myself I feel the need for everyone else in the world to regress to my level. Also I'm 1337er than you because I played back when FPSes were only on PC."
Obviously, the millions and millions of people who bought Halo 2 didn't think the controller was so bad.
Just FYI, the loss of the Xbox Division isn't a management problem because it's expected and has been planned for. Go back to when Microsoft was first planning the console, and they talked about how they weren't expecting to make a profit the entire first generation and possibly not the second.
I don't want half of my money wasted killing new technologies like RFID and DRM because *some* corporations *might* use them *maybe* to violate rights perhaps maybe. As far as I'm concerned, RFIDs are just barcodes that read more reliably and DRM is a nice technology that I can use on my own work as much as Apple or Microsoft can, and killing those technologies hurts *me*.
Sure, the other half is fine... but can we have a sensible group promoting those issues without ranting about harmless stuff like RFID and DRM?
You know, I've heard this about 30 times, but when I go to the grocery store, buns always come in packs of 4 or 8 and the dogs always come in packages of... 4 or 8.
The system is designed with the assumption that each arm of government will attempt to overstep their bounds. That's why the checks and balances exist.
They took from many open source projects but returned precious little to the community.
Are they in violation of any software license? No? Then Apple has absolutely no obligation to give anything to anybody. If "the community" wants more than "precious little," they should put that in the license terms, eh?
That's like getting a plumber bill for $150, paying $150, then having the plumber come and complain that you didn't give him a massage, too.
The part I'm contesting is that it's "unfortunate." How is it "unfortunate" exactly?

I'm a Mac user, how long do I have to wait for 6/80/40?
The original The Longest Journey was the same way. :) Just FYI.
I know Syberia has a sequel, it was a rhetorical question. Still sleepy today.

What about the multiple adventure games that appeared on the Xbox? Surely Syberia made at least enough sales to warrent a sequel.
... wrong.
In any case, saying that consoles killed-off adventure games when you can buy adventure games for a console right now is a bit
I got the impression in the last election that the majority of people voting *for* Kerry were actually voting *against* Bush.
I love the "Dubya" also. They could at the very least be professional enough to use the man's name instead of a derogatory nickname... hell, even Microsoft is spelled "Microsoft" in articles and not, say, "Micro$oft" or whatever other stupid nickname is used in the comments.
Those jokes were funny... when made about the Apple Newton in 1992.
Those who can't be reigned in by typical controls are incarcerated, disappeared or killed, "suicided" is the CIA term, as in any traditional authoritarian regime.
How about... PROVE IT?

Anyway, I don't go there anymore.

Here's the two most impressive parts of it to me:
1) You can turn on the console with the wireless controller, like a TV remote. FINALLY!
2) Every game released for 360, *every game*, has a demo available over Live for free. That's going to increase the quality of games tremendously since publishers know that they can't get away with releasing crap. (Since the lack of a demo, or a crappy demo, will turn gamers off immediately.)

Oh please. How is this different than:
1) Coaches in every sport imaginable
2) Exercise consultants in the gym of your choice
3) Music teachers
I mean, to learn piano, all you need is to buy a piano and then just plunk away at it until you're playing Chopin, right?
I don't want half of my money wasted killing new technologies like RFID and DRM because *some* corporations *might* use them *maybe* to violate rights perhaps maybe. The "best" sci-fi series would probably be one that has more mass appeal. More like, say, Red Dwarf or X-Files. Or Knight Rider (that was SF).
