Nintendo's Next-Gen Arsenal

Much of the coverage of the next-gen skirmish so far has focused on Sony and Microsoft. The already-impressive Xbox Live vs. the PS3. Just the same, for the first time in many years Nintendo is definitely in the running for top spot. About.com has a piece looking at what the big N is bringing to the next-gen party this November. From the article: "While Nintendo is trend setting with controllers like the Wiimote and, to a lesser extent, the nunchaku dongle, other companies will be following along. Nintendo's game plan from the genesis of the Wii has been touch and gamer-friendly games. They see the future of gaming in the Wiimote. Everyone else, at this point, seems to be just catching up."

Once that happens, any competition to that platform is perceived as a personal threat to the fanboy. 2. On a lot of technology sites, your 20-something -> 30-something reader probably has a soft spot for Nintendo because of the NES/SNES. Or they're PC gamers(if they game at all anymore). You don't hit a ton of Sony fans in that demographic(and you have to be a member of the Sony faithful atm to be really positive about the PS3 launch, it has what, 2 exclusive games worth buying, 4 by the end of Q1 2007 and then everything else is TBA 2007 or TBA... for $500-$600. What are these people, insane?), at least not in the US(Europe[and Australia I guess] is different). Tons of slashdot readers have warm fuzzies towards Nintendo, and there is a rabid pro-Nintendo current here in games. If it weren't for everyone's apparent hard-on against 2D gameplay during that era. We're getting franchise updates in the vein of Symphony of the Night and I personally think that's great. I really dig the 2D/3D hybrid style. It's also very relevant to the gimmicky claim. Many, many people called the DS gimmicky here and elsewhere. Try saying that now. You'd think people would remember and be a bit more gun-shy about making claims like that. Most, if not all hands-on reviews have been quite positive, and if any company can pull it off, it's Nintendo. I'm pretty sold on it being something novel, but I'll reserve final judgement for when I'm holding it in my hands and actually playing it.

The entire Gameboy series for example with one lousy screen after another. Why the loyalty? Why the loyalty to one Japanese conglomerate?

For all the hype, I think the Wii & Wii-mote exactly fits that bill. The controller will be fine for some games but clumsy for others. Even with a strip over or under your tv (won't that look pretty?), the thing is going to require calibration and more calibration. And it will be tiring because of the way you must hold it and wave it around. Finally all that arm / wrist action is going to lead to smashed vases, black eyes and broken hands / fingers aplenty. So I question all the hype around it. I'm sure it will be excellent for certain kinds of games, but I see it as much an impediment as an innovation to the system.

Then there is the Wii system itself. The performance, the resolution, the lack of features outside of gaming are way below other next gen consoles. It means that titles making their way from either the 360 or PS3 will have to be hacked down to the bone. Or more likely, Wii owners get enhanced versions of GC / XBox / PS2 titles, until they start to dry up in a few years.

Now the Wii is going to be a good system and has price and immediacy on its side. But beyond the hype the reality is pretty underwhelming. Games like Red Steel (which people rave about) wouldn't raise an eyebrow on a PC. Honestly, I think a significant part of the experience would be lost in online play. Not to mention the fact that the SSB franchise is the only (AFAIK) worthwhile multiplayer game that doesn't require split-screen goodness. People are far too concerned with clock speed. No one bothers to do research and realize that the GPU in the GCN was flat out better than anything else on the market, even in PC GPUs. It's part of the reason ATI bought ArtX in the first place. Add to that the fact that Flipper was developed before ATI perfected several of the technologies they're using in their high end PC cards now, all of which will likely be added to the Wii GPU.

Increasing the clock speed of the CPU & the GPU is the smallest of the changes that are being made to those. Even if the clock speeds were exactly the same as in the GCN, the Wii would be a significant upgrade. With doubled clock speed over their predecessor as well as the other improvements, this is more than a slight upgrade. It's just a really cheap upgrade because they're utilizing technology which is common now, but didn't exist when the GCN was first created.

Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl look pretty nice. RE4 was great on the cube(especially on an SD tv, the jaggies you'll see in screens get smoothed out to almost unnoticeable). Twilight princess is looking fairly impressive for the cube/wii as well(albeit some of the facial expressions in some screens are a tad disconcerting). The first Viewtiful Joe was nice as well, style can trump raw fill rate(although the Cube wasn't a slouch, it tended to look better than the PS2). Metroid Prime showed an attention to detail that was quite nice as well.

What I found really odd, since you brought up CoD3... the smoke effects. The smoke effects in call of duty 3 for the Wii look extremely nice, and down right out of place next to the muddy textures(N64 comparisons seem apt, but memory is probably misleading me there a tad). Something's up there. It looks like someone photoshopped actual smoke into an N64 game. I don't think the textures are done. Still doesn't take the cake for worst "next-gen" graphics though. That honor goes to Madden for the 360/PS3, which looks like somebody from the late 90s is playing around with Poser and Bryce. Just... ugh.

And no, no one would buy a wiimote controller for the gamecube. It would be an add-on, and add-ons don't sell terribly well. Launching the improved gamecube with the controller as a bog-standard peripheral basically lets them do a reset.

As series go, FINAL FANTASY is to video games what James Bond is to movies. FINAL FANTASY loyalists will enjoy an opportunity to debate which installment was best.

Nintendo DS(TM) owners are the big winners. Every week or so, another huge DS title hits, from the Touch Generations title Clubhouse Games(TM) to fan favorites like Elite Beat Agents(TM) and Yoshi's Island(TM) 2. Clearly a gamer's idea of paradise, here is Nintendo's upcoming DS lineup:

    Oct. 9: Clubhouse Games(TM)
    Oct. 16: Nintendogs(TM) (Dalmatian)
    Oct. 23: Magical Starsign(TM)
    Oct. 30: Pokémon® Ranger

    Nov. 13: Yoshi's Island(TM) 2
    Dec. 4: Custom Robo(TM) Arena
    Dec. 4: Kirby(TM) Squeak Squad

And, for Nintendo GameCube(TM) owners, The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess will be available for you this fall. An enhanced version also will be a launch title for Wii. That will all happen on ... Oh look, we're out of space.

And most of the "innovation" is derived from things like one screen being used for a map and the touch screen being used for menus. Wow, groundbreaking.

I think Nintendo is thinking straight in so far as they're focusing on games that are easily accessible. I used to be a "hardcore" gamer, but basically I got sick of gaming and started getting into random stuff like Katamari Damacy, DDR, Amplitude, Ouendan, stuff like that. Quirky, fun experiences with some fun music, easy to learn the rules, easy to pick up and play, then put down.

So I think Nintendo is smart to be thinking about this market. They're heading in the right direction, but unfortunately being innovative in terms of control isn't enough. The game has to be innovative as well. And I look at that Wii list and I see Zelda, Metroid, Mario and retro gaming (no doubt playing Zelda, Metroid and Mario). At some point Nintendo has to stop relying on the franchises to carry them (i.e. Mario Soccer, Mario Basketball Zelda Pinball) and create unique interesting experiences. Discarding all games we are left with three outsiders from the list:
The Wiimote, which is oddly on the last place: shouldn't it be first? The Wii is almost defined by the Wiimote, it's what makes it different.
The Virtual Console, on 6th place. Taking advantage of a huge back collection of games, the Virtual Console should be a huge plus for most hardcore gamers that miss a quick fix of old school gaming. I'm sure it's not a decisive feature for most but I would put it far above 6th place.
And the EA support, on 5th. Is this relevant? I mean, EA is important as it guarantees plenty of games per year but it has a huge downside, most games, in my opinion, are not top notch. Besides, noone buys a console because it has EA games although I'm sure many wouldn't buy a console exactly because it didn't have any mainstream, EA games. Way too high on the list, maybe 10th place?

Besides these three, there are, at least two important features of the Wii which should have made the top10.
WiiConnect24 and GCN compatibility. Nintendo finally learned that it was important to ensure a huge catalog of games in every new console right from the start. These two features help in that by making sure you'll receive demos of new games and the ability to play GCN games. These will also be joined by the Virtual Console which is part of the WiiConnect24.

Other killer features should be stuff like interoperability with the DS or support for indie developers. I, for one, would be extremely interested in developing a small fun game and selling it for 1 a copy or something through the Wii.

Sad, but true. People are quick to jump to the Wii's defense saying casual gamers are more numerous than hardcore gamers (which is true). It's important to remember that all sports games are made for casual gamers, not hardcore gamers. There are gamers who the only games they play are sports games. That's 1 reason EA support is a big weapon in the Nintendo arsenal.

Reason 2 EA support is big, is because, well, let's be honest. Nintendo will do just fine in Japan. They have Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing and plenty of franchises that are just about worshipped over there. Square-Enix is on board with them. They can't help but sell well, and in fact, the GCN sold fairly well in Japan, blasting away the Xbox. Nintendo doesn't sell nearly as well in America, and that is where EA is very important. By offering not just iterations of their major franchises for the Wii, but unique iterations, with offerings that are simply not possible on any other system, that's going to mean a much bigger draw in the US market.

Everything just blew up at work here, so I'm not sure if this is my original reason 3 or not, but the final reason EA support is big is in the quality of the support. EA didn't just say, "And we'll have games for the Wii, too." EA said, "We've set up special teams dedicated to Wii development, and we're going to give you a unique Wii experience." Whether it's a good thing or not, EA is the proverbial 400lb Gorilla, and the other apes (developers) look to see where they're going when they make their decisions. If EA says, "We're behind Nintendo 100%," other developers who may have written Nintendo will reconsider their position. As for "Metroid Prime, which was only played by Gamecube owners", you're not making any sense. There's been Zelda and Metroid games since the NES era. Metroid Prime just happens to be a trilogy in the serie, it's still Metroid.

Metroid Prime is the FPS metroid's name, it might have the original adventure aspects (but might not), but a Adventure game vs a FPS are radically different beasts. It's not the same metroid, and any serious fan will tell you that. It's true that the DS has a Metroid prime, but the only people who played metroid prime are people who have that one DS game or the Gamecube owners. People who didn't buy a gamecube likely never played Metroid prime unless at friends houses, so it won't pull the kind of attention Zelda, and Mario pull in because they are for the most part consecutive games that doesn't change the core formula (Zelda is a 3d/2d top down adventure. It is entirely new hardware.

We don't know anything beyond that, and everything else is rumors ...

One of the more reasonable, and reliable, rumors I have heard is that Nintendo was crunching numbers in about 2003 and determined that 90% of the cost increase in game development for Next Generation games would be caused by producing Normal Maps (and other shader-related data) to make games more Photo-Realistic. Nintendo suddenly asked the question "Why do games need to be photorealistic?"

Ultimately the Wii is the response to this question, and the hardware is designed to eliminate any creative barriers that existed in the previous generation; in comparison to the XBox, PS2 or Gamecube the Wii produces virtually limitless textured geometry, can do amazing physics and AI at the same time.

Why Nintendo wouldn't want to advertize the systems hardware is because in a dick-measuring contest they will lose; Nintendo knows the Wii doesn't have 48 programmable shaders, Nintendo knows they don't have the most parallel processor with theoritical performance that can not be obtained, and Nintendo knows that very little of this will actually matter when it comes to producing a fun game.

    No, Nintendo thinks:

Game idea + Mario = Game that sells.

You can replace the Prince of All Cosmos with Mario, and put Peach as the King of All Cosmos, and the game would play exactly the same (although, I admit, it probably would not have had nearly the sense of humor of Katamari Damacy). Nintendo didn't develop Ouendan, but it could easily have been a cheer squad featuring Mario, Luigi, Wario & Waluigi.

The simple fact of the matter is, Mario sells games. Nintendo doesn't put their franchise characters in a different type of game to strengthen the franchise. They put them in a different type of game, because when they come up with a new, innovative game unlike anything anyone has ever played, who's going to buy it? The same people that made Beyond Good & Evil such a success, those people who went mad over Psychonauts? No matter how good a game is, if you can't get people to buy it, it simply cannot be a success. On the other hand, people will buy a game with Mario in it, because they trust the Mario brand, regardless of the type of game it is (and yes, sometimes regardless of whether or not it's good), so Nintendo recycles its franchise characters into other types of games to give those games a chance.

Yes, I agree it would be nice to get some new IPs out there, after all the stories possible with Mario & Co are limited because of their established 'personality'. On the other hand, a lot of really great games exist because Nintendo can afford to take more of a risk with offshoot franchise games because they know they have a few guaranteed sales right off the bat. Mario Strikers is a great game, lots of fun, but with 3 excellent football simulations on the market, and at least 1 decent arcade football game on the market, do you really think anyone would have chosen it over something like FIFA World Cup if it wasn't a Mario title?
