You guys (you and a child post) have a VERY incomplete understanding of what the dev team did or did not do, and their reasons for such.

They had a jailbreak for the 3GS almost immediately, but apple was already preparing their 3.1 update (beta is already out).

If they released the jailbreak right away, apple would patch it in 3.1 and every new phone sold would be 3.1 without the ability to downgrade due to the fact that apple has new signing protections in the 3GS.

If they waited the short time until the 3.1 release, then every 3.1 and 3.0 phone sold would be jailbreakable forever. Now that geohot has released his jailbreak it is possible that if another flaw is not found, the vast majority of all phones sold by the end of this year will never be jailbreakable.

I can see the merits to each one, but George (geohot) is betting fairly heavily on that he will find another exploit in the new 3.1 software.

I do know that privately some of the team has expressed privately that they are somewhat happy that someone else has released a userland tool and to let him support it for a while.

Actually none of this is really true per se.

The dev team had already released that video to show that the unlock will work on the 3gs once they decided to release the jailbreak.

The unlock is the exact same code as works on the 3G. No modification as the baseband is the same.

They weren't forced to release anything by Geohot (the hacker you are talking about).

Also, tethering worked the minute you had 3.0 on your phone. Not sure what you are waiting for.If you dont have the option to tether, apply the proper IPCC file. No need to jailbreak. Instructions and IPCC files here: http://www.iphone-dev.ca/info/

When I middle click something it opens in a new tab as a sub-tab of the place where I clicked it. It ends up working out as a tree of tabs. This way I have several main sites I read and they each have their own tree of sub-sites as I click them.

I find it very handy to keep me organized while browsing and researching along multiple parallel threads etc.

    I'll take some quick screens:

Here it is with all tab trees expanded. It does not look like this when browsing as I have it set to automatically collapse other trees when I switch between them. Keeps it very clean.

You can also pay $30 and get voicemail and text messages etc plus 500mb of data. All of these plans are tetherable.

As for not being able to tether on the iPhone, I have been doing it for a long while now. I use PDAnet on my phone to do it, which is totally painless (create a network, connect to it with iPhone, launch PDAnet, and you're done). There was also a non JB app in the Appstore for a while called NetShare, but it has since been pulled. Since there is not a single disadvantage to Jailbreaking though, I would just do it and tether to your heart's desire.

There is at least 1 major falsehood in your post, probably two.

    1. AT&T having unlimited data. The data is not unlimited it is capped at 5GB, but they of course don't really advertise this.

    2. Your Canadian data plan being restricted in any way other than a very boldly stated cap.

I pay $30 for 6GB (better than the 'unlimited' in the USA you'll notice). They don't offer this anymore, but at the time it was available for any smartphone, including iPhone and Blackberry. Tethering and using every bit right up to your 6GB cap in any way you would like is totally allowed.

While we on Rogers with iPhones no longer have the option of the 6GB/$30, the way it is gone about by Rogers is much better than AT&T I find. The cap is stated right there in the name of the plan rather that hidden in some ToS, just like everyone says ISPs should do it. And the plan is unrestricted as to use types, which is ideal.

Go to http://rogers.howardforums.com/ for much more info regarding Rogers in Canada, their plans, and just about anything else you can think of.

Actually for AT&T 'unlimited' means 5GB. Go over that and you start having problems. I'd prefer a carrier just be up front about what the limits are.

Rogers for instance, allowed 6GB during the iPhone launch. This is actually more than the 'unlimited' accounts in the states, but did not look at good in marketing.
