I'm curious...has anyone here used a web-based or non-web based email service/program that threaded your emails? (keeping all of a particular sets of emailes/replies in a thread)
It seems pretty damn obvious and simple, but I havent seen it anywhere.
Between the searching, the basically unlimited storage, and this great sounding threading, this totally blows any other email service I've seen right out of the water.
I seriously thought this was an april fools joke. 'I gig per person, you poor suckers! remember its april fools!' Its true, if they can do this, what cant they do?
Its also not a tax, its a levy (there is a difference).
Also, the levy is NOT to compensate for pirates, it is to compensate for the legal copying of music in canada. As I and many others have mentioned many times, copying your friends cd's and downloading music from P2P services is 100% legal in canada.
A nice FAQ on the levy and and legalities of copies and stuff is available here.
No, you cant. You can never ever ever predict it, no matter how much you 'know'. Because, there is always randomness, quantium uncertainty...Chaos.
Meteorologists have been trying for years to predict weather patterns. They have always thought it was a problem that they just dindt know enough, that their computer just couldnt simulate it detailed enough.
It turns out its impossible to predict a complex system. There is true randomness that just cant be predicted.
Yeah, I did a similar presentatioon in grade 9 chemistry class. (I'm not the first, and not claiming credit, just recounting a personal experiance)
Everyone was do to a presentation on a chemical they thought usefull/important/dangerous..whatever.
Few kids of course did water. Few kids did whatever acids they thought were cool etc.
I decided on hydrogen hydroxide. I talked about how this chemical were directly responsible for human deaths per day. Talked about how it causes more landscape erosion, how its the major component of acid rain.. cause many electrical failures..is an industrial solvent and cooland..causes millions in property damage...etc etc etc
Hydrogen Hydroxide is of course, water. Proper Chemical symbol HOH. Acceptable symbol H20 (but that isnt how it's built chemically..its a hydrogen atom with a hydroxide ion on it.)
92 percent or something hilarious of the class voted to have this chemical banned from all parts of life.
Pretty funny. (Again, im not the first to have done this, but it was funny none the less.)
It IS the quickstart feature. Just keeps mozilla started in memory. Unfortunatly that memory seems to sometimes get paged to disk, which makes the mozilla start slow..Which is what (i think) this guy is talking about.
Yes, even the p2p downloading beeing legal, I think the CRIA might have a case against that because normally you can only make a copy of the original...not a copy. Which a mp3 usually is (a copy)
Ah well, let the courts decide...for now I will keep downloading all the mp3s i want:)
Point 2. Canada is already collecting a tarrif on CD's sold in Canada to go towards musicians from sales lost from online music sharing(even though most have never seen a red cent). If I'm already paying tarrifs on CD's to protect the music industry, do I not have a legal right to copy and download music I want?
The tariff collected in canada is to compensate artists for the LEGAL music distribution in canada. Ive said it before and ill say it again. Copying your friend's CD's and downloading songs from P2P networks is 100% LEGAL in canada.
So yes, you do have the legal right to copy and download any music you want.
You can borrow a friend's cd, copy it, and keep that copy. You can NOT make a copy of this for someone else. You can NOT ask him to copy you a cd since him doing this would be illegal. You must be the one making the copy. You also can NOT upload songs on a p2p network. This is also illegal.
Refer to an older post of mine for links to some references. Google will give you more.
Hmm, seems like a thin defense. If it is a tcp/ip connection, then the IP is pretty much unspoofable. And any network monitor can show you which IP something is coming from, or if it was multiple people, etc.
But if their main proof is the guy/girl has lots of files...TOO BAD, you can posess allll the mp3s you want, you dont even have to own the original cds. The clincher for this person here is the fact that they UPLOADED this song to someone else..
Whether the CRIA can prove that they ACTUALLY downloaded this song (since logs are easily fabricated), and whether a private company going out and doing this constitutes legal proof or not, thats another matter
Remember, IANAL, IAAEE (i am an electrical engineer):)
Are the CRIA making sure to go only after the P2P users who have uploaded?
I ask since...possesing copies of music you dont own, including P2P downloading is TOTALLYLEGAL here in canada. (first link is to the govt site explaining fair use, explaining you can copy any music, even music you dont own, as long as YOU are the one making the copy)
Fair use covers the fact that I can 100% legally borrow my friends cd's and copy them. He, on the other hand, CAN NOT make a copy for me.
So I guess Canada is not totally regressing into the USA:)
If I knew I was gonna lose the race, I'd have my bot detonate its internal EMP device.

Security Threat of Floppy Drives

USB Swiss Army Knife

I'd bet that devices like these give security officers, IP hoarders, and trade secret people the willies. The idea that someone (employee, vendor, or confident hacker) could walk into any office, stick their floppy disk into a PC and transfer files to/from an internal network is not too pleasant to contemplate. Seems like a great way to introduce trojans or snarf sensitive files. I wonder if some companies disable Floppy Drives on their PCs to prevent this type of unauthorized access?(bold=changes)
The point is, portable storage isnt new. And disabling it, is relativly simple.
Acually, the lag is NOT from the signal trying to reach the receiver. The lag is from the fact that the mice only update so many time per second to conserve battery power. While USB updates 125ish times per second, a typical wireless mouse might be less than 50 times a second. (also, electromagnetic waves dont travel at the speed of light but thats a moot point:))
On the other hand, you can pick up a Logitech MX700 for a decent price now a days and it updates at the same rate as USB (150 times per second). It also has an amazing mouse sensor.
You will NOT be able to make this mouse skip or lag in range of the receiver. The only way you would know the mouse isnt corded is the small added weight from a couple AA's.
They combated the battery problem by making the reciever a charging cradle for the two NiMH batteries inside the mouse. That way your batteries only last a few days sure, but you can put the thing on the charging cradle every night and never see the low bat light blinking. Like a cordless phone.

$2.50 ?
Its 77 cents (canadian) for a normal cd-r.
Its also not a tax, its a levy (there is a difference).

The San Jose Business Journal adds the details that the WiFi access will be called SBC's Freedom Link
GREAT! They can serve some freedom internet to be served with the freedom fries. And maybe freedom peanuts.
Haha what a great idea..
:)
It wouldnt even be hard to do.
PS. make sure to wear gloves! The explosion frequently doesnt destroy all prints
Also, watch a video of hydrogen bomb exploding...thats another nuclear fusion reaction.

I wasnt going for moderation, just commenting on the standard humor I expect from slashdot..
:)
So I guess...a redundant moderation is fitting
Maybe they made their network cables out of wood..because they are slashdotted!
Or one of many jokes about slashdotters beeing no stranger to wood and computers! ho ho ho..

If only this applied to movies and software now!

okayyy
I've got a log here
Connect to 13.232.33.121
Searched "spears"
Found 10 file(s)
Initiate transfer with 13.232.33.121 for (some mp3)
Transfer done in 132 second(s)
some BS log like that..this is an obvious fake, but how will they prove they didnt just whip up some bs connection log to sue someone ?
Yeah, I for one would vouch for more slashdotters getting into this 'SOAP' idea.

I guess this is the last time HE will call slashdot unpopular.
HAHA thats pretty funny.
They say it hasnt really taken off yet.
I would say thats pretty untrue considering there is an effect named after them of a site beeing taken down by a sheer number of click-throughs.
I would consider than popular enough.

And now...some hits from the 80's...The 1780's!!
They're donating millions of CD's for educational purposes?
;)
They didn't say education purposes..they said donating to education institutions
