  1. There is still Via on AMD Loses $1.2 Billion and Its CEO · · Score: 2, Interesting

You have all forgotten about about Via Chips. They are building x86 procs now again.

  2. Packet Shaping on ISP Sued By Irish RIAA · · Score: 3, Interesting

"The record companies believed greater availability of broadband will lead to a further escalation in the volume of unlawful distribution of recordings, he added." It looks like they don't like the idea of Broadband getting to Ireland. I live in Galway and use ntl/chorus cable for my Broadband. I have discovered that they are packet shaping my connection, as I cannot get a Bittorrent connection to sail above 5k/s for more than a few minutes at a time, it's hopeless, even downloading legal torrents for ISO's for Linux Distro's. Yeah, I'm Galways Linux User.

  3. Re:Ubuntu "getting out of your way" on Vista Vs. Gutsy Gibbon · · Score: 2, Insightful

It was an example of bad management of high profile websites that caused the breach, not bad security on the OS's behalf. The thing is, these servers were brute forced over sshd - and from what I know, it took the attackers nearly a week of brute forcing to get in, and Windows servers can be brute forced and attacked in very much the same way. What it needs is an attentive admin who keeps an eye on the servers, and keeps an eye on the logs, and should pick up unusual activity on the firewall or ports. So, it was bad administration that caused this, not an insecure OS.

  4. Re:Through Money tinted glasses on Microsoft Planning to Buy Open Source Companies? · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is a quote somewhere from Bill Gates - I do not remember where I saw it, but he more or less said that he saw Open Source as the absolute future of software development. He admitted that Closed source was not going to work much longer, and that Microsoft would be looking in the Open Source direction for development. This potentially means that one day, we could even see an Open Source MS Office suite, which would be cool, as it could then possibly be ported to run natively in Linux.

  5. Chinese Moonbase on Will China Beat the United States Back to the Moon? · · Score: 1

Now, don't quote me on this, but I do believe that China may have long term plans to build a moonbase once it finds a way of being able to get to and from the moon efficiently. One of the ideas proposed for the moonbase was a Mass Driver to make it easier to get cargo etc to earth by propelling it at great speeds. There is, however, one other use for a Mass Driver; Orbital bombardment. Why spend tons and tons of money on nuclear weapons when all you need to do is build a giant Space catapult capable of hurling small asteroids at specific targets on Earth? The US needs to be looking to space to see if it's next attacks are going to come from there. At the moment, the US has a treaty in place with Russia and a few other countries to ensure that someone will not start building weapons in space.
