  1. Re:RTFA on The Longhorn Dream Reborn · · Score: 1

Thank you. I thought I was the only one. Why so many people thought Microsoft would simply drop .NET so quickly is beyond me. But I guess it's more fun to freak out first.

  2. An Afterthought on Firefox Most Vulnerable Browser, Safari Close · · Score: 1

This doesn't make any sense. First of all, I have used Cenzic tools, they don't test the web browser, they test web apps. So they scan a website/webpages looking for fields and other data forms and do a bunch of test on those to check for XSS, SQL injection, potential overflows, etc.

So I am really confused on where they got the data for vulnerabilities of a browser and why they would mention this when they aren't testing it using their tool. If they are going solely based on what is released in update notes or anything like that, well then a browser who patches all it's problems will appear way more vulnerable than one that patches only the ones it feels like getting around to; not to mention the one that is now patched is less vulnerable then the one that did nothing.

I would like to see someone visit a malicious site (somewhere that installs malware and the like) in all these browsers, it won't be Firefox or Safari (or Opera for that mater) who get infected. And why wasn't Chrome included in this comparison? This comparison seems like an afterthought and probably shouldn't have been included in the write-up, I would take this as a grain of sand and would simply ignore it.

  3. Re:Keepass on Best Tool For Remembering Passwords? · · Score: 1

This is an awesome solution. I have been using it for a couple of years now and have introduced it to a lot of people. Basically create one strong password that you can remember, it creates a nice encrypted file for you, lets you sort and group your passwords (i.e. Internet, Banking, Network, and lets you add custom groups). Then you can have it perform auto-type where it switches to the last window and types the username > tab > password (you can also use scripting if you need it to do some other variation for a particular site), or copy just the username or password with an auto-clear memory so your password doesn't stay in memory.

Keepass works Windows, Linux, and Mac. I don't have a Mac, but it runs on all my Linux and Windows machines. And because it is encrypted, you can throw it on a jump drive, or something like SkyDrive so you can access it from anywhere. You can even install Keepass on your jumpdrive with the no-installer version so you have a total portable solution.

  4. It's Not Linux That Scares Them on He's a Mac, He's a PC, But We're Linux! · · Score: 1

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Apple's OSX backend *nix based and everyone is loving the new MAC OS. So it's not really Linux itself that a casual computer user is scared of, it's the fact they have to face it head on. OSX takes care of so many things for people, they don't have to worry about learning how to install various dependency to watch a video. They should just be able to watch it. There is plenty of great software for Linux, but there is a good chunk that don't have installation packages (RPMs, etc) which means you will need to compile it and that is very intimating for someone who is use to simple checking email and browsing a few of their favorite sites.

I believe their needs to be an easier way (RPM is close) to installing software and this needs to become the defacto method for software distribution and still provide a way to get the source for those who want to do everything themselves.

I love Linux and three out of four of my computers have Linux, but I deal with computers/servers for a living and so I spend 10+ hours almost every single day with them so I am very comfortable with PC's, most people use them for simple tasks and don't want to get into that much detail, so their needs to be an easier option for them.

  5. Re:Obvious answer... on PC Gaming Suggestions for Console-like Fun? · · Score: 1

Yeah, the console is the best way to go for multiplayer on the same system. The only games I can think of that allow multiplayer on the same PC are console emulators. I play both console and PC and if you are looking for a console-like, there really isn't a substitution. I have tried playing games that I own on a console on the PC, there really is a big difference, even with a controller. But if you do stick with a PC and want a similar feel, you might want to check out the Microsoft controller (the one that looks just like the XBox 360, or you can get the 360 controller if you plan on getting one later)

I guess it took them a really long time to post, because when i sent the news to Slashdot, it was Thursday October 12th at like noon. I kinda thought they just skiped over it.

  7. Well that's nice on War Declared on Caps Lock Key · · Score: 1

That's nice that you don't use Caps, but there are many people who do. And who says not to use Caps? The only time Windows talks about it is when you are typing in your password to give you a heads up that it's on in case you didn't mean to (which isn't very secure if someone is watching but is convenient when you forgot you had it on). I don't use it very often, but when I do, I am glad it's there. And if you can not keep from hitting the Caps Lock while typing, LEARN HOW TO TYPE!
