Of those, I think Powder DS is the most fun. It uses both screens, a touch interface, draggable buttons, and has (somewhat) remappable controls. It's also available in lot of different platforms if you want to try it on your desktop/laptop first.

  5. Open-source GH clone on Zen and the Art of Guitar Hero · · Score: 2, Informative

I've been thinking about giving one of those Guitar Hero games a spin but I don't want to drop a crapload of money on a new console (or video card for the windows port) plus the cost of the game and controller. It turns out that there is a pygame project called Frets on Fire that uses your computer keyboard as your axe. It's GNU gpl and cross-platform though I can only vouch for Windows myself.

The only downside is the lack of licensed songs. There looks to be a pretty good community with lots of user-created songs for it, and there is some sort of way to import GH songs if you own the games.

  8. Re:I know this probably sounds like a troll... on NIN Releases Garageband Sources For 3 New Tracks · · Score: 2, Interesting

Let's say a band can make $20,000 for performing at a 5,000 seat venue as a self-promoted event without record labels getting involved. Now, if said band were signed to a label and had to pay to play (or had to sell even more to get the record company the profits they want), the band may very well have to play a 30,000 seat arena to see the same $20,000.

They get the same amount of money either way, but since they're paying out less in scenario A, they don't need to worry about selling more seats. Then when they do get to the point of having the draw to fill Shea on their own (or have Shea approach them to do the show) they do get the super-mega-huge bucks.

I would totally expect that what you say is correct for rockstars as much as it is for anyone else: lose the market and lose your shirt.

I imagine that selling more seats in itself might not have the advantage in that scenario, but out of 30,000 people, there is a bigger chance of making some dough on t-shirts, posters, wallet-chains, etc. Merchandising is one of the big moneymakers for bands.
  9. Commodore VIC-20 maybe? on Good Vintage Computers? · · Score: 1

My father had a VIC-20 when I was very young. It had cartridges like a game console as well as cassette tapes for input. It looks like there was a modem for it as well.

I don't remember doing much with it but a bit of BASIC and playing some really weird games like Tooth Invaders (floss or die), Blue Meanies from Outer Space, and a bunch of text-adventure games.

Since about 1999, when I was playing Zelda:MM and Unreal Tournament at the same time, I have thought that you could make an amazing Online Multiplayer (Deathmatch or CTF) game using Zelda as a base; you could make several classes of characters which had different items and health levels or what not. Personally, I think that this is an obvious extention to The Legend of Zelda and I'm disapointed that no one has made a Zelda Clone that has included this.
It might not be exactly what you're looking for, but Heretic 2 was a 3rd person shooter/sworder. The single player kinda sucked but multiplayer was a blast. I remember some pretty intense staff fights at LAN parties back in high school.

  19. The real issue: TAB key reform. on War Declared on Caps Lock Key · · Score: 1

Capslock certainly has it's place in the business sector and I've seen it used as a run-lock in games, but what really bugs me is the position of the Tab key. When entering numbers into spreadsheets or the like on the numpad, one has to keep a hand permanently in Tab-ville or suffer the full-keyboard reach after each entry. Keyboards generally have two sets of Ctrl, Alt, Enter, and Shift keys, but why only one Tab? Having a Tab button by the numpad would save time and effort, perhaps even cause less repetive strain. Either subdivide the + or add one underneath the Pageup/Pagedown bloc. Aside from a few models of external numpads, I've never really seen this addressed. Is one supposed to buy an expensive programmable gaming rig just to get a little Tab action?
