The gas will interact and that will have interesting effects including star formation. Galaxy collisions often result in the gas being stripped off the smaller galaxy. I think the Milky Way is to big to lose all its gas on the first pass.
I don't think they went from Norway to Newfoundland. Instead they went Norway -> Orkneys -> Iceland -> Greenland -> Newfoundland. So while still an amazing achievement, it was more like one more hop, mostly west, so tracking the sun is useful for that. The vikings from Greenland that sailed down to L'Anse aux Meadows had already been sailing west from Greenland to trade with the natives (the Dorsets?) and just kept going further. L'Anse aux Meadows was a long way from Greenland and the Indians further south would have been tough to fight, given the population of Greenland was small. So you can see why they did not establish large settlements there. If word had gotten all the way back to Norway and the multiple hops were easier then perhaps more would have settled but it didn't look as attractive as it did for the rest of Europe 500 years later.

Meteors from earth have probably peppered the other planets anyway. Some bacteria spores can survive inside them. So they are probably already contaminated. And in any case we could compare the DNA to see if it is from earth.
Given we have survived the last umpteen million years we can figure the odds are fairly low. Even for asteroids like this, it is not a planet killer. Of course humans are populating more areas in bigger numbers than we were say, a couple of thousand years ago, so anything hitting has higher odds of doing damage but the human race is fairly safe. No one knew about these until recently so knowing does make you nervous. At least they are making good progress.
Not knowing about Eris doesn't mean there is likely to be a big planet on target to hit earth. If Eris was inside the orbit of Nepture it would have been discovered much quicker. Don't read those crazy panic websites without doing some reading of the mainstream sites to put it into perspective.
I don't think the earth can give it enough energy to slingshot it out of the solar system. You would need Jupiter to do that.
And despite appearances it is hard for it to go into the Sun. It is in orbit around the Sun so would need to slow down a LOT to fall into the Sun. Look up how complicated it was for the messenger spacecraft to get into Mercury 's orbit. It takes a lot of energy to slow down. It is not simply a matter of pointing yourself at the Sun. There is no atmosphere to slow you down. Not like objects in very low earth orbit.
It just takes one sample to prove it all. Don't these things die? Don't they cross the road?

There were people who claimed to have stuff but rather than rushing to share it out they did the usual dodgy thing and said that the guvmint and others were trying to suppress the info and so they would have it privately tested by unknown firms. I'd be more worried about launching a nuclear weapon in orbit above us. More risk of that going wrong than the asteroid causing problems.
