Yeah, I remember we had a perm kick/ban policy whenever someone entered our channel using MS chat. It was funny since it was a pretty mainstream channel about Tolkien (pre movies) which alot of people would look up as their first port of call when experimenting with IRC. Ah the joy of being young and have little to no morals.

  3. Re:Linux: 4096 on Windows 7 To Be 256-Core Aware · · Score: 5, Funny

The most recent mainline Linux release has integrated mature patches for 4096 core scalability, that have been developed by high performance computing corporations and tested in the field for years. Previous versions were rated for "only" 1024 cores. That still makes 256 look like a Gameboy.

It must be really hard for Microsoft to compete in the HPC space. I almost feel bad for them. Almost.

I think these comparisons have to stop. They give Linux an unfair bias. Linux does not have to spend resources on things like cool names their releases, and wages for people with excellent chairthrowing abilities, so naturally they can instead use the resources on developing software. Come back when each release of Linux is given inspiring names like Linux XP and they have proper chairthrowing capabilities, then we shall make a fair assesment.

When I was using the internet in various cafes in Beijing, I didn't notice any blocks from sites I wanted to visit. I could update my livejournal, and ssh to my computer in America, so I'm not really sure what the great firewall really could accomplish. I mean, I could feasibly tunnel all of my connection through the ssh link, after all.

While this is true, my sense is that the Great Firewall is mostly in place to prevent people from accidently stumble over dissident information. The 1% of the population who cares and actually are interested in antigovernment information can and will get hands on it. The government is, I believe, quite content with this arrangement. They can then worry about the 1% and arrest them if they become a problem. This is the reason why the Chinese language Google site would not list entries about the TianAnMen incident, but the English would (even within China)

  5. What's the point? on Microsoft Readies 360 Launch For China · · Score: 1

It seems a bit pointless, it's already widely available in the major cities (Imported from Hong Kong I guess). Then again, it's probably a part of a long time strategy of pouring loads of money into establishing themselves in China, and then reap the benefits in 10-15 years.

  6. Re:The reason why... on EU 'Happy' To Wait For PS3 · · Score: 1

That's pretty ignorant, most of Europe (certainly comparable in numbers to the US) do have a high disposable income and console gaming is very popular, though the taste in games might differ from the American market.

However Xbox (or Gamecube) never really hit it big on continental Europe and that might be why Sony feels less pressure to launch along with other markets. (PS2 has sold about the same numbers as in NA)

  7. Re:Who the BBC is on BBC Signs 'Memo of Understanding' With Microsoft · · Score: 1

It's not. I had one of those license guys coming around to my house, and I thought shit, since I have TV for my PS2 so I started the usual rant about only just bought it, I'm foreign (English, not very good, no?) and so on, well, he was friendly enough and said no problem, I'll just sign you up now and no worries, so he came in, and just asked to see it turned on. Well, I did and when there was no signal I explained how I only used it for my Playstation and then he said that they only charged if I actually watched TV, if I only used it for DVDs or game consoles there was no need, and then he left again.

Do you have any source for that? It seems common knowledge yet I've never actually seen any proof of it. I have however seen arguements (with some proof) put forward in defense of PS2 making a profit from the beginning (not counting R&D)

Well, I think it's a fair question. I personally thought it was 25 cents, purely based on Carl Bark's Scrooge McDuck comics where his first dime is translated into .25 of our local currency. It's not something I have investigated in great depth since I haven't come across it too often in common speak around here. I guess you do learn something new every day.
