Matthew Reilly's books make Dan Brown look like high art. You can tell he's just dying for them to be made into films - and has even marked out the sequences that'll "wow" the audience the most. (Count the exclamation marks, highest-number wins the prize) In particular the "Scarecrow" books are just *awful*, IMHO

Well you've got (among others) Peter F Hamilton - global warming, politics etc. (Mindstar Rising trilogy) or epic saga dealing with space-faring cultures and humanity facing the realisation that Death isn't the end (Night's Dawn trilogy), along with many others. Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash, Diamond age etc., and his most recent (in the last month) Reamde looking at the successor to World of Warcraft Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon (and the rest of the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy) is a stunning 'new' work, well recommended China Mieville - Perdido Street Station and Scar in particular Charlie Stross - Halting State is another one about a future with distributed 'augmented reality' games etc. And not one of 'em talks about social networks etc.

When the bus/train doesn't take me longer to commute, and costs less than driving, I'll consider it. For example, my current commute is 85 miles each way, and takes an average of two hours. A bit excessive even by my (UK) standards, but there we go. 75 miles of that is driving, which takes me an hour. The last 10 miles is done by train, which takes me - an hour. If I were to go with public transport the entire way, it would take me three-and-a-half hours each way. Driving costs me roughly £120 per week in fuel. Public transport costs me £100 PER DAY.

Totally agree - this seems to be another case of "Well, no-one was protecting my child!" - do it your damn self.

"mobile apps are the new platform for kids."

I wonder if it's more that mobile apps are the new childminder for kids. Yes, some play games on an iDevice for fun, but it's like TV, I suspect a lot of parents say "Just play on this, little Billy", and let them do that instead of actually spending time with the child.

Yeah, these big amounts (in the context of a 99 cent game) are ridiculous.

I love the concept of true micropayments, and think it's got a huge market. (Hell, AppStores etc. are proof of that - look at Angry Birds taking more than $1m per day over the Christmas Season) But this add-one stuff that's maybe 200% or 2000% of the original app purchase is just insane.

(Note : I feel the same about add-on packs for cars etc., where you end up spending [significant percentage of car's original price] on upgrades, sports packs etc.

The Daily Mail is *not* a good alternative. It's another hate-filled shitrag of bigotry and clashing themes ("We pay too much to live here, so we need to hire cheap labour" vs "oh no, not immigrants", for example)

I'd agree that the other two are good sources of news, but the Mail? Fuck, they still whine on about conspiracy theories for killing the Princess of Wales. And it still sells papers.

Relying on the Daily Mail for news is like relying on Fox News for level-headed commentary.
