    I really do not understand why this has blown up into such a conflagration.

    Because, as you said yourself, it helps advance a certain political agenda. These people will grasp at any straws to do that. It doesn't matter that the "criticisms have been answered": they won't listen.

    Sure there are. But the point is that Beck's many followers call themselves conservative, and they would definitely say that he is conservative. Given that, who is to say that he isn't a "true" conservative?

    Prayer is not banned in school. Kids can pray all they want. Government-forced prayer is banned in school. For some reason that gets conservatives so mad you would think they were about to bust an artery.

    They are a partisan, Republican-oriented polling company. They have gotten into trouble in the recent past for their questionable results.

    The example you gave is true in general. When a media source allows debate and viewpoints from all over the political spectrum, conservatives call that "biased." "Fair and Balanced" means only conservative viewpoints are allowed.

    Did you even read the article? The bill was introduced by a Democrat and a Republican. Obama was not involved.
