I've got drives older than I am sitting around that still work. Granted I don't use them anymore, but they ran for quite some time.
As most people have said, the best thing to do is backup a lot, and replace it when it starts to go bad. If it starts making loud crazy noises, chances are its on its last leg. If you get random boot errors...same thing. Basically, when it starts fucking up, its probably time for a replacement, but beyond that...well...just ride it out. Don't spend money you don't need to spend just to keep on a schedule. As long as you back up things that are terribly important you should not have a problem.
For the 80 gigs of pr0n well...its not like you watch ALL of it anymore anyway right? You're gonna get new porn regardless so its probably not a huge loss if that all goes down with your HDD. Then again, they are coming out with some rather large new removeable formats (Blu-ray or HDDVD) so maybe its not as hard to backup as you'd think.;)
I know you guys are really quick to jump on the "M$ suxx0rz!!!!11" bandwagon, but I'd just like to say this isn't so much Microsoft as it is Hollywood. If you're going to be pissed at someone, but pissed at them for being fucking stupid. If they'd spend more time focusing on quality content instead of "protecting" their shitty content, we might not need this bullshit. Microsoft was faced with either giving in to their demands and having support for this stuff or refusing on "principal" and having no support. They could tell MS to take Vista and shove it up their collective asses. I know DRM is bad and blah blah...trust me I hate it as much as you do, but from a responsible business perspective, you'd have to be completely retarded to refuse this. Microsoft looked at in the sense that their either threw in the DRM and had the content or they did not throw it in and they did not have the content. It could be more complicated than that, but honestly I think the blame rests more squarely on Hollywood than anyone else.
I know this is offtopic but is it just me, or are a lot of you really fucking bitchy about articles?
If you think the article is stupid, don't read it. Is it absolutely necessary for you idiots to post in every god damn article you don't like about how stupid it is and that Slashdot sucks? We don't give a flying fuck about how you think the quality here is slipping, and clearly neither do the editors, so why do you waste your time telling us that in EVERY ARTICLE? If it sucks here, go to Digg and shut the hell up; no one is keeping you here.
To comment on the article, I saw this earlier and I laughed my ass off. I have no problems with articles like this making it into the news because they are very entertaining.:) I wonder if he gave the kid his login details back later. Regardless, the kid probably learned a good lesson here in not being a bane of society. Now he knows that if he fucks with the wrong people, he's going to get fucked and hopefully now he won't end up as some 40 year old spambot sending drone or something. Oh, and by the way...get off my lawn.
I don't like to have more than maybe 10 Windows open max and a total of roughly 10 tabs. Any more than that gets cluttered and I start closing things. I like being able to read stuff. The only time I have to overrule this is at work when I need to have several things open because I access them constantly (I work on a help desk). I hate the set up at work I have, but its necessary. Oh and I never turn my PC off (its a web server for one thing) and as long as your monitor is not on, it doesn't really consume that much power. People that freak out over that are retarded, I've never understood that "OMFG YOU LEAVE UR COMPUTERZ ON ALL DAY?!?!?" when it probably costs you an extra 5 bucks a month. Wopp-dee-fucking doo. -_-
Really, a simple lock-down will keep most kids out of trouble, but you never know when some kid is going to figure out how to reset your Windows admin password with a Linux live CD.
Ah, I did that on many a computer at my high school. We had a CD that would blank out the local administrator password and allow us free reign of the computer. I also mapped network drives in other rooms all the time to get my shit from other comps. I wonder if the techs there ever found out we did stuff like that.:)
I understand that a big obnoxious Flash animation with a loading screen will take people away...but what about a simple image with links on the side to most of the parts of your site? I would think that probably would not be that bad, especially when the default page on your site is simply a news page.
How does Windows lose? The average software installation on Linux is a NIGHTMARE to most average people and the system management, while not spectacular, is not as horrible as some of you drama queens make it out to be. I'll take a Windows installer over a./make install any day, thanks.
Come on guys, are you seriously trying to bring up all these arguments about rumble working with motion sensitivity? Just because Sony said that is the reason does not mean it is. I can say with 99.9% accuracy that if Nintendo can do it than Sony can do it. Hell, why not do what they always do and just copy Nintendo? They ALREADY copied the motion sensitivity.:p
Who's to say that life can't exist in that radiation? Like you said, we know a whole lot of nothing, so there's quite a few things that are possible considering how little we actually know at this point.
You know it is just because they're bitter. It won't cost them much, it will work, and there are far more features that cost far more that they could cut out of the controller (like the Blu-ray drive I mentioned early that costs god knows how much to put in the console). Oh and to address people that are worried about battery life, you can always turn it off, that's a half assed excuse for a half assed controller.
You realize that if you actually spent more money on these things that keep breaking on you that they would NOT break on you? You get what you pay for and if you're cheap you get a cheap product...what do you expect?
I mostly agree with you. While its not really going to affect my decision to get one, I'm really very irritated that they lied to us about the price and release date. I was really really looking forward to it launching before the PS3 and costing 200 bucks, but here we are. Oh well.:-/
Yeah, I'd like to echo the comment that every website logs your IP address automatically. Look through your access logs if you're running Apache and there you have it. The REAL logging would be logging system stats and outputting all the information into something useable. So either they are logging more than just your IP address or even more likely they are just scaring people.
I'd say he probably spends considerably less time working the botnet and making that money than he would actually going to work. The advantage here is that not only is he making money, but he's making enough that he could just not go to work if he somehow kept at it long enough.
You could make the same argument against installing Linux on a computer that came with Windows then, couldn't you? The computer was originally intended to run Windows, but you went and broke the law apparently and installed Linux...is that really punishable? I, for one, see it as the same thing. The dashboard is simply a different OS (a stripped down Windows) and you have to go to somewhat greater lengths to GET linux on there. I see that as far use, personally.
I agree with a lot of people here in that 2000/XP is pretty damn stable. In short, if your XP is crashing its probably you doing something you shouldn't or because you have shitty hardware, NOT because MS made a shitty OS. I'm just as critical of them as everyone else, but at least I can give them credit where credit is due.
Isn't the soft mod exploit legal to install Linux with? What happens you ask?
1. Download gamesave for Mech Assault or another game that has been exploited
2. Open the save in the game of choice
3. Launch Linux Installer
While thats obviously a simple run down of what you do, is that actually in violation of anything? You aren't modifying the hardware to run insigned code and crap, you are simply making the game overflow, crash, and then run a BIOS loader which loads a Linux installer. Am I missing something here?
While most of you obviously didn't actually READ the article and just had lots of funny stuff to say, I still think this another example of stupid software patents. So what, you came up with a good idea, are you really helping by copyrighting and making everyone else reinvent the wheel?
I use the power of an FTP server on my network and that works well enough for me.:) Screw uploading my crap somewhere else, I can just download it from myself if I need it. Then again, 95% of computer users probably have no idea what I'm even talking about right now.
I'm really not that impressed with this GUI, because I was honestly expecting a little more from a $600 gaming system. Sure, it works fine for the PSP, but I expected it to have a little more flare...you know...flex that PS3 hardware muscle a little bit. What's the point of all that raw power if all you do with it is some half assed little menu of icons. They should probably take a page out of Microsoft's book and get something going like the XBOX 360 Dashboard. I'm not a big XBOX fan, but it looks great, it is customizeable, Sony obviously has no qualms following other companies, and I'll be the first to admit that I don't mind it looking a bit flashy. I mean god...put SOME effort into it and don't use the exact same interface you have on the PSP...its a mobile gaming system...its supposed to be simple. PS3 is a $600 dollar "computer" and it the GUI should reflect this.
That's an awfully nice operating system you've got there...it would be a shame if something were to happen to it.
I've got drives older than I am sitting around that still work. Granted I don't use them anymore, but they ran for quite some time.
;)

Flash is annoying anyway...no big loss. :p
I understand that a big obnoxious Flash animation with a loading screen will take people away...but what about a simple image with links on the side to most of the parts of your site? He'll remove that rumble that will cost $1 more to include in the controller but no the 200 dollar blu-ray drive? Am I missing something here?
